Because bubble wrap had air bubbles that burst upon impact decreasing the impact the tv had more then hte others. Kinda simple.

now let me tell you some simple tv magic, they used a overlay of another video of another working set, then put the picture on the crt to fool the viewer into thinking it was displayed fully functional on the tv set in question. Isn't television media wonderful :)

This experiment was re-done in the Spanish version of Brainiac and the TV wrapped in polystyrene could be turned on and had image... although for some reason it wasn't fully operative either. I seem to remember it was the built-in VCR what was broken instead.
