You are right 100flyingfish - as I clarified in my message to Gruntig2008, the tefillin are NOT real, they are plastic. I bought them in Baltimore, because my son has attended morning prayers every day for the past 18 months.
Sephardic tradition allows boys 6 years and over to read the Torah and Haftara (except for Parashat Zakhor). In this, we follow the Rambam and Beit Yosef as brought in Shulhan Arukh.
@Gruntig2008 I dont know what the sephardic minhagim are, but the shin on the teffillin is painted a diff. color and the retzoo,oss/straps also don't look like the real deal
@Gruntig2008 its the yellow shin on the side, they are toy Tefillin...like for practice, and he'll be very comfortable in his real ones once he becomes a Bar Mitzva now haha
