Sorry, but being a dick for the sake of it would be pointing out this: The Harrier II was never a Hawker design, it was designed by McDonnel Douglas/Boeing.
@davylah think everyone knows that, but it was origionaly a hawker aircraft so whenever someone searches for it on youtube or google etc that is what they will search for, as unless you are a geek like most of us they are not going to type BAE HarrierII GR7 are they! DOnt be a dick just for the sake of it
well actually i was there as well as quite a few others or maybe all of lowestoft hmm.... and it was 20(R)sqdn and had a specially painted blue tail.....
oh yah because i was stationed at the main base why don't you educate us on what base that is that you spoke to the pilot on, you need to name the wing and base, but i bet you cant
this aircraft was flown by Flt Lt Tony Cann........ im based at the same base as him i think i would know and the RAF are the best pilots in the world =-) plus they are crazy. which means i then have to fix the buggers lol
Wow, a Marine Corp Harrier into the Ocean eh? Wrong - this is an RAF Harrier flown by Flt Lt Tony Cann and it crashed into the North Sea off Lowestoft, UK, on 2nd August 2002 - pilot error.
My source is the incrdible John Farley, the original test pilot of the Harrier Program. He described how simply he touched the wrong lever and cut the throttle.
(the harrier has 2 main levers on the left; the throttle and the nozzle position lever, he moved the wrong one)
The UK Ministry of Defence released the report, fallenfuryburn. The wreckage was recovered and the cause was due to pilot error. The report is available on the internet. The Harrier's serial was ZD464. Do an internet search for 'zd464 accident report'
The camera perspective is deceptive. The Harrier is displaying at the required safety distance. It isn't the first time that the nozzle mix up has caused an accident.
@colbertnation1776
Luftwaffe didn't agree on that :-)
But that's all water under the bridge, don't mention the war and things...

Well, VTOL, 'vertical take off and landing'... right, right...
That landing was as good as vertical, now wasn't it?

Don't mean to be pedantic, but it's not a 'Hawker' Harrier, it's a BAE Harrier II GR7

1RAFJOE 2 years ago
Thank God it wasn't a russian pilot, they always fly into the crowd and kill half the people
panzerkilla 3 years ago
It was pilot error. He moved the thrusters foward so there was nothing keeping it in a hover and not enough power to fly off.
minipilot131 3 years ago
yea..there was no airflow over the wings and they stalled

he cut that pretty fine didnt he..

Hi, im Tony Mcann, you may know from such flight incidents as, harrier crashes into sea and yes i'm sorry guys it was me.
ozmas12 4 years ago
the error was that the cooling system of the aircraft can only sustain hovering for a certain time, of which he exceeded
thus no thrust.
GDavies21 4 years ago
not true can you civilians please research this before you go posting its really easy to get the actual flight records and cockpit radio

commando12345 4 years ago
Thanks, but you're wrong, the report says he pulled the wrong lever - the engine didn't fail. Now who's the twat?

i guess the pilot wasnt allowed to fly after that

Fitnessfreaky,
The pilot continued to fly.
TE3EJ 2 years ago
That suprises me considering it was such a simple error that cost millions, not to mention the close proximity of civilians to the crash
