Listen to real Paul Burlsons guitar work, theres a clip of him attempting Hound Dog with The Johnny Burnette Trio on youtube, ohh dear, but make your own judgment, the proof of the pudding is as they say in the eating. ALL the great JB Trio work was done as correctly stated by Grady Martin. You can also hear Gradys work on many early Rockabilly tracks, including Buddy Hollys Rock Around With Olivie.
If you want to see and hear the original rock guitarist that played the distortion licks on this song 1956.(covered by this group and others).Search-Paul Burlison..Go down to-Rock and Roll Trio-Part Three..second song..then go to the original cut in 1956..Johnny Burnette..Train Kept Rollin
I just want to say thank you. I'm plain rock guitarist who's learning rockabilly for my new band. In 2 hours of following your videos, I already sound like I almost know what I'm doing. Almost. Thank you very much, bro.
@Damianblf i totally agree with mike, i've been playing rockabilly and psychobilly for a while and these give a real good insight in to rockabilly guitar
@destayler94 t's the compilation of alot of the recording by Johnny Burnette... get it on amazon search "RockBilly Boogie" look for the black and whit pic and RED boxes on the right side of the Cd
Thankyou! your instructions are awesome. I have been trying for some time to find some Rockabilly progressions and now thanks to you I have!! I am ecstatic!! As for those who request tabs, these are easy to transpose if you just stop the progress and write them down. Which is what I am doing. Thanks again.
I remember playing this guitar stuff back in the 50's in ever honkie tonk in southen Ohio.Man what a great era that was for new picker's.Don't forget Grady Martin playing on Marty Robbins El paso. What a player. He was with Willie Nelson for years
This was the first of Damian's videos that I viewed, and it knocked me over. I knew right then that this was the style I wanted to learn. The backing tracks are included in Damian's "Hot Rod Rockabilly Guitar" DVD set, available on Ebay and definitely worth the investment.
Anyone who's interested should check out the Grady Martin compilation "Roughneck Blues" on the Rev-Ola label. Great stuff including of course Johnny Burnette and also Johnny Horton, Brenda Lee, Buddy Holly, Little Jimmy Dickens, Red Foley and others. Great playing, lots of this type of stuff. The "Rockin' Rollin' Johnny Horton" CD on Bear Family is great too and has Grady Martin on every track.
When you are playing double stops on the 2nd and 3rd strings, like at 2:00, are you just strumming across those two strings without hitting adjacent ones or are you hitting those other strings and muting them? I can finger pick just fine but selectively strumming certain strings to a shuffle is killing me.
You are playing a Paul Burlison solo. Grady Martin played on alot of the ballads Paul Burlison is the guy with the "Tele" sound. Paul Burlison also played guitar on the Peggy Lee stuff.
@Damianblf A lot of people don’t realise that Grady played on the Trio’s records and many other things coming out of Nashville in the 50’s. Grady had a lovely cool but quite dirty tone, you recreate it very well sir; my favourite records he played on were by Johnny Horton....he really should be far more recognised.
I totally dig this kind of music. Great job, though I do agree with another comenter that a maybe slowdown the explanation a little. Theres some cool stuff going on her that Id like to get down.
The only hard part is on the 9th fret.if you are more advanced you can hear what i am doing!!! Now nice n slow!!! where was that? and now fast! he then finishes with you might have a little trouble with it........That says he has no confidence over his teaching abilities and knows he has taught us nothing, all he has done is showed off his ability!!!!
His Guitar, A Gretsch ( of course) Setzer Edition.. looks like the Orange 6120. Laquer I think. Forgot to mentuion that. Sounds like he's using mostly a good tube amp and just some really good reverb, maybe a delay. Not too much in the way of compression or overdrive.
my rig, fender twin, clean channel, Boss DD-20 Giga delay, ( any will do to get started) , A seymour duncan twin tube overdrive, and a Barber Tone compressor. But, to get a good tone and a great start.. just a good amp.( try to stay away from Solid state if you can afford it..) and a delay will get you going! If you cant afford a delay look for a good used amp, witha good reverb. AND the amp doesnt need to be like mine.. ( 100Watts) great sound is still acheived with 20 watt, 30 watt tube amps..
Alot of questions about the amps.. I cant speak for him, ( he does mention his equiptment in the last two posts) But... a good quality tube amp is preferred..not the law but you'll notice.. the guys who have been doing this along time will prefer them.. gives you tone.. a delay... reverb will do if you cant afford a delay..thats all you need to get started.clean sound, alitle "slap" delay going and your on the first step..some do like to also use a compressor or a good quality overdrive.
for all you guys who want to know what kinda amp to use....you kinda gotta figure that one out yourself. all though, any amp with reverb or delay effects work. or you can go out to your local music store and by a Boss DD-3 Digital Delay Pedal or a cheap Danelectro Delay Pedal
