The LDS church has not condoned polygamy in over 100 years. The reason it implemented polygamy is that the religion was a restitution of all things relating to the ancient church and when Christ was upon the earth. That was not the only reasoning. Polygamy saved women from destitution, poverty, and danger when their husbands died, brothers, uncles, etc. while crossing the plains, disease...Only righteous men who were financially able to support more than one wife were sanctioned to do so.
