  • David Sylvian is the Prince of Cool! He never disapoints when he delivers great music.

  • David Sylvian 'Forbidden Colours' (single), 1983

    com Ryuichi Sakamoto

do filme "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence"

  • Beautiful song I have heard when I was teenager. Now I love it and listen with my little doughter. Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia

  • my mum saw ryuchi in concert and said he was awesome !!!

  • Pure beauty.

  • Little gems like this should stay with the underground and not be liked by the masses. Keeps it cool for the uncool kids amongst us.

  • It doesn't matter how old you are, you've still lived through the years, stop being bloody babies and enjoy the fact you've acutely had a longer life than many.

  • i just turned 16 and i absolutely adore this song....! hasn't even started yet and im about to cry. this song goes PERFECTLY with a forbidden relationship i had. i hate (love) what this song does to me

  • David sylvian is another Patrick mcaloone from prefan sprout. Totally talented with gr8 vocals just not the success they deserve. Bizarre and gary barlow has the biggest selling tour. madness, a tone deaf society.

  • just a beautiful song.

  • I listened to this song a long time, discussing dreams for the future with a friend. Some 4 or 5 years later now, and I'm where I dreamed I wanted to be, sitting typing this at a desk in my room in Tokyo. Recently though I'd forgotten about this fact and instead just found myself getting frustrated over trivial things. Songs like this take me back, back to a younger state of mind and make me appreciate where I am now. 夢をやっと実現した。

  • What version is this? I love the synthesizers.

  • a timeless classic!

i found a magazine from 1983 the other day containing an interveiw with Mr Sylvian about this song. He said that the film manager didn't want a vocal version, it was Ryuichi's and David's own project. also, this song had nothing to do with the film as david composed the lyrics first and the video just contains clips of the film so it has some sort of link to the film!

  • @Milltinqq although i admire both versions i have to agree that the vocal free version was more appropriate as a soundtrack.

  • what about the prisoner,s

  • CUTTRE FISHUUUUU

  • this song has been with me since i was teens im in my 40s now, what a beautiful beautiful song love it till death, saw japan years ago, brilliant,xx memories last forever xxx

  • Beautiful song. Love the background music!

  • I SEEK POLE SHIFT SURVIVAL GROUP

  • Amazing Music from an amazing film, from amazing time. I love it.

  • So...with all the talent shows going on....they still haven't found any one near this or Peter Murphy's sound! That goes to show, that real voices aren't made...they just are!

  • Tears

  • the words ruin the song for me

  • Music is a time machine!

  • memories. loved this when it was out. summer of 83 was such a good time, was 15, god if i could go back xxx

  • But seriously, this is an amazing song, I remember it very well :-)

  • Could I order a David Sandwich please? With me as the filling? Ingredients: One Sylvian, One Bowie, some eyeliner and lots of hairspray.

  • so close to my heart, i bleed

  • Look at my favs for a musical brainwave.

  • sylvian seemed like a potential new Bowie but never got quite the same critical acclaim

  • I have this on vinyl! Have not heard it forever but they played it on the radio! Tune!

  • I once had the privilege of meeting the producer of this movie...this is such a beautiful song....David Bowie is amazing in the film.

  • 就像詩一樣 又像在唱小夜曲

    就這樣被打動了

  • :) not much else needed really.

  • Exception song! very touching

  • @jkp123ism....no harm in crying mate. The movie still has a profound affect on me also.

  • One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written ... it tears my heart apart every time I hear it!!!

  • omG!! i had the piano version on my pc and it's name was simply "piano" i fell in love with the tune ans was emo bcuz i did not know neitehr the name or the son'g interpret. yesterday i was watching "Wild 80's" on VH1 and i thought that the tune was very familiar to me :-? then my attention was drawn by the name of ryuichi sakamoto. then i realized, that i found who was the interpret of my "piano" song which i had on my pc!!! YEEES! hehe thx God

  • ota vastaan

  • so much more better then tacky brightman

  • Wbat a voice.

  • "Forbidden Colours" makes my eyes wet and sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it.

And I heard the song many many times since the eary 80's. It has lost nothing of it's impression to me.

  • Hermosa, hermosa!!!!!

  • This is hauntingly beautiful and what a voice...

  • 1981 saw this live, what an experience, will never leave me, steve middlesbrough UK

  • One of the all time great songs. I still gush tears everytime I come back to it.

  • Just perfect <3

  • check out that 80's hair!!! Go David

  • i saw this movie when i was 12,this will never leave my mind

  • a forgotten treasure, the combination of Sylvian and Sakamoto is sublime.

  • "I am not a criminal"... toller Film, zeitlos schön, wie die Musik !

  • what a song!! i will always remember this song, memories from way back!! i love davids voice in this , so emotional and broken, black and blue , raw, classic tune, an exellent performance, i still feel sad after all these years when i listen to this!! simply brilliant xxxxxx

  • David Sylvian! True beautifull voice, god he sooooooooo just brill. xxxx

  • I prefer the instrumental version myself, Bowie feels a little misplaced in this song for my tastes. Love what Sylvian and Sakamoto have done though, the piano version of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is beautiful as well.

  • doesn't wear off, so beautiful. It's bigger than the film itself, in my honest opinion.

  • beautiful, leaves me breathless everytime....

never lets me down when i need a fix of something special

  • gorgeous song!

  • I little bit late, but I hope for peace.

    for the WW2 memorial day

  • Know what you mean ... I remember the film being made in Auckland where I live and couldn't wait to see it. It, and this song still move me.

  • no matter how many time i hear this song it still makes me cry why is that im a 53 year old bloke.

  • @jkp123ism Because it evokes a sense of loss and melancholic yearning, and the older you get the more you feel this reflected in your own life.

  • @jkp123ism for me as well, it reminds me keeping your dignity even with broken promises

  • @jkp123ism I'm 43 year old bloke and makes me cry too.

  • @jkp123ism I feel the same way and I'm 53 as well

  • love him :)

  • If you heard heart of asia techno songs before this you can go fuck yourself!!!!

  • Has anybody else noticed that David has got a similar singing voice to legendary British entertainer Sir Bruce Forsyth? I would like to hear Brucey tackle songs like Ghosts & Nightporter. I don't think Bruce would look quite so good in eyeliner though. Maybe David could do a cover of the Generation Game theme with Merzbow & Keiji Haino backing him.

  • @mintybartlam Your comparing Sir Bruce Forsyth to David Sylvian? Ah right your Sir Bruce obviously...

  • i love this man....

  • still makes me shiver!!! even to this day 25 years later xxxx

  • @freshborn66 I was thinking the same thing. This film always makes me somewhat emotional with those dreeded chills up and down my back.

  • Masterpiece.

  • Beautiful song - loved it all those years ago and love it now - will never get sick of this

  • David Sylvian still does amazing stuff - check him out, a freaky genius in all the best sense

  • @Zorbathebuddhaful

  • Amazing..wonderful..

  • beautiful, still makes me cry after all these years..bowie up to his neck ..

  • beautiful, still makes me cry after all these years..bowie up to his neck ..

  • Still sends a shiver down my spine after all these years too.

  • He looks like Bowie when Bowie did "Wild is the wind"

  • This takes me straight back to 1983 in a heartbeat. David Sylvian's voice still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Spine-tingling.

  • A wonderful song which can be played on and on without being disturbing.

  • I only just discovered Ryuichi Sakamoto a month ago, but I'm just amazed by his body of work. His early work with Yellow Magic Orchestra alone is enough to establish him as one of the greatest musical pioneers of our time, but that just wasn't enough for Sakamoto, so he took it a big step further by composing amazing film music soundtracks like "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" and even giving a memorable acting performance in the movie. He's like a musical "Renaissance Man".

  • Regarding the "Clannad" comments, I think a lot of people are confusing the more recent Japanese visual novel & anime series with the older Irish band.

What the user originally meant was the Japanese Clannad which had a soundtrack clearly inspired by Ryuichi Sakamoto, not the Irish Clannad who had their own completely different style of music.

  • vale la pena di vivere, solo per sentirla

  • One of the most beautiful songs and interpretation of the music story...

  • "The Blood of Christ, or the beat of my heart..." This line speaks volumes to me...

  • Just beautiful...............

  • This song is pure art.... thanks a lot for uploading it :)

  • When a song makes you desperatly in need to see the movie it was composed for, then you are sure it is better than good.

  • This track still makes the hairs on the back of my neck go up - even after all these years - such beautiful, vulnerable vocals, haunting sound track and powerful film making - It's a classic - pure and simple. XXX

  • NEW MUSIC GROUP CAN DIN SKY

Where your attention is directed. Your Energy there flows!

  • The 60 who disliked this are morons

  • loved this song since i was 15, its sooooooo beautiful,30 years later i still love this lovley song, classic

  • @freshborn66

Me too! I'm now 45 and at the risk of sounding melodramatic, always wanted this song to be played at my funeral.

Some songs are too beautiful to describe in words... this is one of them.

Thanks my friend for your nice words about the magic that is Ryuichi Sakamoto & David Sylvian...

  • @Ththanks we all suffer in a way and this song is suffer and love, i will always have this song embeded in my memory xxxxxxxxxxx atwasthesummerofsv

  • anyone have a download? preferrable not a rip of youtube

  • I'd never use the adjective perfect to describe a song, but this song is simply PERFECT

  • extremely haunting song. unforgetable

  • This song is like a beautiful autumn day, full of shadows and sorrow and rain and grief and yet still "showing unquestioning faith"

  • Beautiful ,wondrous...mmmmn.....

  • Beautiful ,wondrous...

  • 懐かしい曲です。

  • 1st heard this in the film merry xmas mr laurence i fell in love with the song as well as the movie both are great

  • Mr. Sakamoto, what I wouldn't give to write and perform a song with you, and have Mr. Sylvian double with me on vocals...maybe, someday! W'

  • This is just too exquisite!

  • Timeless classic. Sakamoto is a genius.

  • I can't think of a better acting performance from a musician than Sakamoto's in this film, he was superb

  • The best song ever written, recorded and released.....no competition.....and i have a HUGE music collection

  • Music from the good old days when a song would stop you in your tracks and nothing mattered until the song was over. Todays youth will never know that feeling.

  • @mintwithahole I know that feeling and I am 17. There is still hope, I hope

  • @StDusk there is.

  • A beautiful song. Two great Artists. I weep for Japan at this time. The destruction there is far to great for her to recover from. The media will never tell the truth.

  • Sylvian... oh my <3 <3 <3

  • Chartless Infusion

    Space Between Two Nods

  • It´s strange when everytime I listem to this..

It´s so beautiful, so deep... Tears and mixed feelings...

Music for human beings love themselves...

  • "my love wears forbidden colours"... remember when we were kids and being gay wasn't mainstream?

  • @ Wilde202: Love how you put it "from the ridiculous to the sublime"....

  • God this sounds as luscious in 2011 as it did in 1983 - pure genius

  • @BigChelseaDan An absolute TUNE still standing the test of time

  • An absolute TUNE still standing the test of time

  • Thank you so much for sharing this; I looooooooooooove this song, and how anyone can confuse it with Clannad is beyond me; Japan ruled the 80's for anyone paying attention and Sir David does excellent on his own; lots of love:-)

  • A M O questa canzone Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ♥ !·٠•●♥ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ♥●•٠’·٠•●♥ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ♥●•٠·٠•●♥ Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ♥●•٠·٠•●

  • Such a lovely soundtrack by Sakamoto. His acting was surprisingly good in the film seeing as he's a composer and not an actor. He's a beautiful man, not to mention a talented one.

  • for all japaneses in this moment you'll never be alone!!!

  • two great talents of new wave music, unforgettable!!!! I was really young when I listened their music. Actually, my heart is thumping!!!!

  • David's voice gives me goosebumps........

  • this song ... semplicemente fantastica, amazing, special, ... love love and love.

  • so good. makes me want to get down on some final fantasy for sure

  • Stunning !

  • One of the best film of the eighties even now after 28 years i still don't get bored of watching this masterpiece, and as for this song david sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto compliment each other amazingly well.

  • No disrespect intended at all... This guy has a great voice and sings with complete compassion.... But to put words to a masterpiece which may never be written again in this form seems in its simplicity... Wrong..... Like I said.. There is no disrespect intentioned but to try and change something which is this truely beautiful itself should not happen. This is a genius piece of art and should not be altered. Thanks.. John.. Manchester.. UK.

  • @jc1031975 here here...................

  • Comment removed

  • @jc1031975 With all due respect... Ryuichi Sakamoto composed the instrumental "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" and then asked his very dear friend David Sylvian to write lyrics reflecting the feelings of the film's main character (Captain Yanoi), hence "Forbidden Colours"! Both versions are included on the film soundtrack and both are amazingly beautiful. Sakamoto and Sylvian are two gods here on Earth...

  • @23sugarcane well said!100% agree

  • @jc1031975 Its David Sylvian!!

  • CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THAT PIANO RIFF? IV HEARD IT IN A FASTER SOUND?
