Actually, he was real, you can check in all Jazz' dictionnaries. He didn't record that much, but you can still find some of his 78" records. Maybe Woody Allen didn't know about him, it could be a coincidence, or maybe he choose a random name in a jazz dictionnary...?
Nonsense, of course he was real...You lot will be saying Louis Armstrong didn't exist next! In fact, when I was little, my father used to take me to see Emmet Ray play, and he must have been in his 90's then. One day a little crippled boy hobbled up to the stage and Emmet laid his hands on him and not only could the kid walk and run instantly, but he also found he could suddenly play guitar and trombone like a master.. what a guy!
@faebheankwest Well, hard to believe but i was at the same concert! Emmet Ray spoke to a friend of mine, who afterward became a guitar virtuoso AND had a chain of dry cleaning stores! God bless Emmet Ray!!!
This movie is really genius I think. Sean Penn nails the character of the narcisistic Emmet Ray. And the girl who played the mute (sorry can't remember her name) was great. Felt so sorry for her at the end. So sweet. Woody Allen did a great job of directing this. But no, Emmett was not a realy guitar player. Just a character.
@joshuaisaacflores Your comment is useless, and rather dumb.. "with all due respect," ,... Emmet Ray was NOT a real person. He's a character. Sean Penn is an ACTOR. Woody Allen made up Emmet Ray,, so i you're going to make dumb comments please get YOUR facts right. Its a MOVIE!!! Not a real person. Sheesh,, why did you bother.
@joshuaisaacflores Please get your facts correct before chiding some other person on here for an intelligent comment.
Emmet Ray was NOT a real person. He is a character in a movie. It is a woody allen movie and he made up the character of Emmet Ray. He's fictitious. He doesn't exsist. "With all due respect. " don't comment when you don't know what you are writing about please.
I do agree that his comment was quite foolish and nitpicky, but I don't it it matters if Emmet Ray is real or not. Charles Foster Kane isn't real, but that doesn't stop people from figuring out Rosebud. I think it matters more if the facts are accurate, regardless of whether the character is real or not... any amount of time spent in an English Literary class will tell you that. :) I'm pretty sure that joshuaisaacflores is already aware that Ray is fictional.
i saw this movie about 3 or 4 years ago and i loved it, ive seen it a few times, but today i was christmas shopping and i saw it at FYE for 4 dollars. So if your looking for it its out there and its cheap.
Howard Alden (born October 17, 1958 (age 49)) is an American jazz guitarist born in Newport Beach, California. He has recorded a long series of albums for Concord Records. His performances were dubbed over Sean Penn as 'Emmet Ray' in the 1999 Woody Allen film Sweet and Lowdown. Howard has produced several albums with George Van Eps.
For all of you believers :) Ray emmet is fictional person... this is some kind of autobiography of Django Reindthart... And if i remember good all songs in movie are Django's
this is by far, the best performance of sean penn, ever, and indeed, one of the most underrated film ever...penn and morton...awesome, and of course, the great great great woody allen!!!
This film really brings together three of the coolest people ever: Sean Penn, Woody Allen, and Django Reinardt. You normally wouldn't think to group the same three people and have it work, but with this, mmm boy.
Saw this movie the other week. Really quite a sweet little film, with an interesting but certainly memorable lead performance. Not to mention the music'c great. Shame there's not more videos of it on You Tube.

@photo199 You wrote: " Emmet was not a really guitar player." -- Which in and of itself does not make sense.
Did you mean to write that: "Emmet [Ray] was not a really [great] guitar player." ?
Or, did you mean to writet: "Emmet[Ray] was not really a guitar player." ?
In any case you are wrong.
In reality: Emmet Ray was a guitar player; and he was a great guitar player
With all due respect, please don't comment when you don't know what you are writing about.
