@ricp123 If she's lived in America for long enough to identify herself as an American, then she IS an American pianist, who cares if she has an accent?
I adore Her accent TOO, I just adore everything She IS...She is like a beautiful , beautiful dream of an angel... God bless You, dear Valentina Lisitsa!
She can really interpret the music the right way, as the original composers meant their music to be played. Her playing will renew interest among young people who listen to her lively interpretations!
Fabulous I enjoyed that very much and I hope we see you in Australia one day, the silly comments on accent reminded me of that silly film where Shirley McClaine plays a Russian piano teach in London does anyone remember the title? well in the space of 2 hours I found 2 great young pianists that I don't know before TY so much Youtube and Peter, incidentally do you know Gerard Wilhelms in Sydney?
why the need to comment on her accent? she speaks better english than I speak russian. she's a phenomenal piano player- who gives a shit how she speaks??????

I am also Ukranian but can't write it or read it. My Ukranian grandmother who came to America in 1907, never taught me. Now i am too old to learn and she passed away about 40 years ago. But she would have loved your piano playing even more than i do. You are the most talented pianist i have ever heard!
Как же замечательно, что есть Интернет, что благодаря Интернету есть у меня возможность послушать Валентину Лисицу. И увидеть. Спасибо, Валентина! Thank you, Pieter!
What a wonder getting Valentina up close like this. Her accent is music of its own, and she is going to hang onto it too. I figured out that she was a Ukrainian, and am so proud of myself for being so intuitively insightful. She is really of the Russian school of pianism, whether she likes or admits to it or not, because of the background but also, and more so, the Eastern European genes in her. The UTube approach to trying to get yourself known is a very risky slippery slope, but...
@CiachoLover That could be the slang use... but as far as I know, a russian girl(and google translate) told me it means she-fox ... literally female fox : )
@CiachoLover Haha... good one : ) I always knew that vixen was slang for a malicious woman, but didn't know it was also, literally, a female fox : ) Or that a male fox was called a "dog". lol
4:10-4:16 (in heavy russian accent and questionable english grammar) "sometimes I would learn, thanks to memory and fast learning, I would learn concerto in three days, which I did once"
5:19 her hands are beautiful AND intelligent ;-) i love watching her hands on the keyboard and how lovely to know it is intuitive, the way they move. Thanks for posting, I sort of had her pegged as "beautiful pianist with a zillion views" which seems to be a whole new class, now I appreciate her more. "I didn't have that outlet for so many years." i will watch more of her stuff now
One would think that with a gigantic talent like she has Val would be cold, aloof and arrogant but not Val. To her credit she is approachable, open, honest and casual in real life...a great human being and magnificent talent!
After watching this, I liked Valentina Lisitsa even more, which is kind of impossible since I already liked her so much. She deserves the best and I love her accent!!!
Valentina, you are such a wonderful person! It sounds in your music but now I can see what kind of soul is behind this beautiful music :)... Wish you all the best :)
Beautiful pianist, and a beautiful person - she deserves all the luck in the world, simply an amazing individual and a pleasure to have discovered her.
Just goes to show some good can come from YouTube and the internet
I think it's Bosendorfer, the Viennese piano manufacturer as it is Valentina's most favourite brand. And I am so happy that I understood your question in Cyrillic Alphabet as I have recently begun to study Russian. Greetings from Slovakia.
Lisitsa !! of course - it's a l l "muscle memory", it's not and never "brain memory" - memory is not a "brain-thing", it's allover in the body, but n o t in the head - how could anyone ever play piano if it were not the whole body "playing" - just look what Rudolf Steiner says about musical memory !! as you say - the next time it works, that's the essence of practice...
She's obviously very good (and charming!). But your comment is ridiculous. You can't really judge her interpretation from a youtube video (the sound quality is so low). And there are many incredibly good pianists in the world. To surpass the top pianists of the 20th century? Nobody alive now does that.
@scotty123123 Uh...please review her channel. She has well over 40 videos of professionally recorded pieces and yes: most of their interpretations surpass the recordings of said 20th century pianists. =) I have never heard Chopin's etudes played so fluidly or Totentanz played so vigorously.
@afertyus1000 Hamelin plays like a machine. Richter had almost an entire century to work on his technique. Valentina has had a quarter and is already at this caliber.
@Kaggypants Uh your opinion she is good but my opinion is Hamelin has better technique, and is more accurate her tone production leaves a little to be desired also
@afertyus1000 Hamelin's Hungarian Rhapsody #2 and his performance of the 3 Concert Etudes are wonderful...but everything else he plays sounds robotic.
That is also your opinion. As pianists mature, they obtain more insight and are able to perfect their technique. This is all besides the fact considering the entire point is she should have a record label by now.
@Kaggypants yes she deserves a record label but her performances esp liszts don juan put me off a bit her technique is strange and when she rocks back and forth looks a bit demented? sorry, hamelin on supervirtuoso is anything but robotic he purposely chose rare compositions of the utmost difficulty mendtner, hamelin, godowsky, but how can you say waldrauschen etc robotic
@afertyus1000 I haven't noticed any rocking back and forth...but to draw a comparison: Lang Lang does plenty of that and yet even that clown has a record label.
Listen to Hamelin's videos. He focuses entirely too much on the technical aspects and often does not provide any emotion or insight when playing. Lisitsa has a nice balance between both. The fact that he chooses extremely technical pieces kind of hints at this aspect. He seems to play a piece just to prove he can. Wrong reason to, IMHO.
@Kaggypants Well ok i have on various eg rach etude no6 don juan etc lang Lang is also annoying but he has great talent too,
with regards to focussing on technical issues pardon me but the pieces are highly technical and he is totally honest to the score maybe he has'nt got much stage prescence but that is because he is an unassuming humble person and not an actor/diva then again i feel there are enough artists past and present without even more to merit a recording contract
@afertyus1000 I'm not trying to discredit Hamelin. =) He is an extraordinary pianist...but so is Lisitsa. The point is, Lisitsa should honestly have a label. She is at least as talented (IMHO, much more so) than Bang Bang who does have a record label.
i had been wondering what kind of person a complete genius like her would be, someone who spends so much time behind her piano.. i think it must feel like she is the piano sometimes, telling her feelings through the keys. and now i see she's also a very nice person. what a nice video, thank you :)
I prefare the bosendorfer too, i only have a sampler though and not the real thing! The first time i got it, i sat there all night playing the lower notes, orgasmic. Very dark, very beautiful. If i could sum up haunting beauty in one sound, it would be a lower c on a bosendorfer...if only i could play the bloody thing! I have only discovered Valentina recently, and wow, what a girl and what a talent. And she has such good taste in music too, but jesus the playing is insane. I am in awe of her.
You are a great pianist. I only cannot understand why you think of yourself as an American pianist (as you told). I would never ever - as an immigrant - say that I feel like the American. Why? Because I do not like this country where stupidity and lack of classical culture play such big role. Well, Ukraine does not have so much money, but on the other hand - Ukraine is better for culture, people, food, lifestyle, beautiful girls etc...
She proud of being an American citizen and we are proud to have her! If you don't like this country then you are more than welcome to leave. All nations have their strengths and weakness but I bet a greater percentage are leaving the Ukraine and coming to U.S. then vise versa. That might be a reflection of our great the "culture" is over there. I bet you also worship American dollars. Most "immigrants" do. Peace!
What does she say in around 04:10-04:14 when she speaks sometimes she learned things fast to memory so what did she learn in 3 days? I can't make it out :(
@divyx : she tells that she learned a piano concerto in 3 days (and I think she was referring to Liszt's piano concerto no. 2, but I don't have time to check that)
не могу даже представить,как они ее понимают...чудовищная речь,невероятно...я такого даже никогда не слышала...столько лет прожить за рубежом и никогда не слышать правильной английской речи...
Don't be an American pianist.. just be you.. music knows no boundaries.. and you play like that... Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Chopin, they're not all from the same place on the map.. And believe me.. they are all happy to know you are playing their music. I love you.. thank you for sharing yourself with us.
Please do not moan about her slavic accent. I think it is already great that she can speak English in a grammatically correct way while many English speakers can't say a word in any foreign language. Secondly her main occupation is not reciting poetry or acting, or voice recording, but playing piano and she does it absolutely wonderfully.
I'll never understand people who criticize the accents of foreign speakers. I can't speak a word of any language outside English, and I believe the same can be said of most of the complainers, so who are we to talk? She's already way ahead of us in speech, and light years ahead in most other areas!
@AnotherSchmoe Maybe you won't understand them because you can only speak English!! AHAHAHA
No, but I agree, I'm an ESL teacher, and having had the luxury to teach in Ukraine, I can testify that while she does retain a strong Russian accent, she's fairly competent at expressing herself. Not that that matters. And Valentina, if you do read this, I'm honored to have even such minimal contact with you and I love your homeland, I was in ZP and Lugansk. Greetings from a fellow musician!
@lightsilverdust That's right. And to this native speaker of English, her accent is most charming. Not altogether grammatically correct, but as you said, it doesn't matter.
wow, what she says about the bosendorfer is absolutely true! My piano teacher has one of these magnificent piano's and, compared to a steinway, there is a little schwarzenegger pushing up the keys from underneath;that's how heavy they are. But the tone quality is simply unmatched.
Charming and sympathetic video portrait of a player who i've still hardly managed to enjoy! Mostly the playing is too fast and dismissive. The exception: when she partnered Hilary Hahn, a remarkable fusion occurred. It's wonderful to discover a delightful personality, even if she doesn't tolerate any sort of comment on her channel that is not totally worshipful!
Unbelieavable... have people nothing better to do than to comment on her thick accent? I mean yes it's heavy, but it's not like she is difficult to understand. And I think it has to do with russian in general. I only know very, very few russian native speakers who are able to mask their accents.
Wow! If anyone has the right to be a diva, it is her. So it is very refreshing to see that she is so down to earth despite her incredible talent! Brava!
what a marvelous human being..Love you Valentina, come to Newyork please!!

with regards to focussing on technical issues pardon me but the pieces are highly technical and he is totally honest to the score maybe he has'nt got much stage prescence but that is because he is an unassuming humble person and not an actor/diva then again i feel there are enough artists past and present without even more to merit a recording contract
afertyus1000 11 months ago
@afertyus1000 I'm not trying to discredit Hamelin. =) He is an extraordinary pianist...but so is Lisitsa. The point is, Lisitsa should honestly have a label. She is at least as talented (IMHO, much more so) than Bang Bang who does have a record label.
Kaggypants 11 months ago
@Kaggypants ok yes fair enough i agree she is more talented than bang bang and deserves a contract people here like her immensely
afertyus1000 11 months ago
i had been wondering what kind of person a complete genius like her would be, someone who spends so much time behind her piano.. i think it must feel like she is the piano sometimes, telling her feelings through the keys. and now i see she's also a very nice person. what a nice video, thank you :)

Daaaalibor 1 year ago
@Daaaalibor

I can't make it out :(
Charming woman.
divyx 1 year ago
@divyx : she tells that she learned a piano concerto in 3 days (and I think she was referring to Liszt's piano concerto no. 2, but I don't have time to check that)
PieterdeRooijHolland 1 year ago
@PieterdeRooijHolland Wtf how the fuck do you learn a whole piano concerto in three days?!
That's like me trying to learn how to speak Icelandic in a week.
She's raw as hell for doing that though lol.

@PieterdeRooijHolland She learned the Liszt A major concerto in three days?

Don't be an American pianist.. just be you.. music knows no boundaries.. and you play like that... Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Chopin, they're not all from the same place on the map.. And believe me.. they are all happy to know you are playing their music. I love you.. thank you for sharing yourself with us.

Please do not moan about her slavic accent. I think it is already great that she can speak English in a grammatically correct way while many English speakers can't say a word in any foreign language. Secondly her main occupation is not reciting poetry or acting, or voice recording, but playing piano and she does it absolutely wonderfully.
lightsilverdust 1 year ago 31
@lightsilverdust
I'll never understand people who criticize the accents of foreign speakers. I can't speak a word of any language outside English, and I believe the same can be said of most of the complainers, so who are we to talk? She's already way ahead of us in speech, and light years ahead in most other areas!
AnotherSchmoe 1 year ago 31
@AnotherSchmoe Maybe you won't understand them because you can only speak English!! AHAHAHA
No, but I agree, I'm an ESL teacher, and having had the luxury to teach in Ukraine, I can testify that while she does retain a strong Russian accent, she's fairly competent at expressing herself. Not that that matters. And Valentina, if you do read this, I'm honored to have even such minimal contact with you and I love your homeland, I was in ZP and Lugansk. Greetings from a fellow musician!
rds769 8 months ago
@lightsilverdust That's right. And to this native speaker of English, her accent is most charming. Not altogether grammatically correct, but as you said, it doesn't matter.
Deutschlieber 1 year ago
wow, what she says about the bosendorfer is absolutely true!

It's wonderful to discover a delightful personality, even if she doesn't tolerate any sort of comment on her channel that is not totally worshipful!

valentina have u ever played czerny as a child? :)
Sashomei 1 year ago
Unbelieavable... have people nothing better to do than to comment on her thick accent? I mean yes it's heavy, but it's not like she is difficult to understand. And I think it has to do with russian in general. I only know very, very few russian native speakers who are able to mask their accents.
