  • The vase you just made on this video is really nice! Now I'm going to try and make one. I have watched most of your video's and enjoyed every one of them. I've learned a lot just watching you, and made a lot of things that you've done from watching your video's. Thanks so Much! David

  • Hey Dan...I'm David. I've really learned alot from watching your video's, for that Thank You!

I'm having a bit of a problem with my Chip and Dip Bowls, after making them they Crack when they dry, and I have a hard time getting them off the bat. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thank You

  • WOW very nice!

  • why greek roman and not just greek?

  • LOAN

  • Do you have to bake it ? ... I don't know anything about pottery .

  • i am in sculptuere and ceramics at school and i just want to say that your video helped me alot thankx :)

  • how hard would it be to make a a 5ft tall industrial one

  • MINI DISC 1:03

  • Hi Dan, how much clay did you use for this vase???

  • When the clay has become leather hard, and you start to trim, do you trim the darker few horizontal strips? or is that a type of slip?

  • That was not an attempt... that was a magical success.

  • Wow I don't know something could be so messy and so beautiful at the same time! You're very good.

  • One of my favorite vids! Beautiful, look forward to making one myself (or at least trying :))!

  • wow. Its like a robot is doing this.. but IT's always better because AI can't have the same instinct as humans.

  • WOW...absolutely beautiful to watch :D

  • hmm i never seem to see you trim the bottom of your works.

If you do it how do you do it? just curious :)

  • David Toppelberg, if you're reading this... you go girl!

  • pure artist :D

  • thank you so much this is exacly what i needed for my social studies project!

  • its like he dips his hands in magic or sumthin before making these videos

  • how to make a big pott with this tecnique?

  • Now if I can just figure a way to set this laptop up beside my wheel and pause and start it while I work...without ruining my laptop with clay

  • wat kina of clay do u use

  • Hey dan, im currently taking ceramic at my high school. but my question is. when your making the middle wider are you doing anything with your other hand that is not inside the vase?

  • Amazing!

  • Superbly skilful throwing and innately good judgement as to form, as always. Thanks, Dan.

  • great vids just get a new bat...that noise is terrible

  • These are amazing pieces!

Quick question: Did you ever make a foot for any of the vases? or did you personally just leave them? I know some people would try a foot, I wouldn't personally, and so I just wondered.

    Keep up the great work!

  • What type of clay are you usin in this throwing video? I would love to work with it.

  • damn fine job. your technique is superior but you seem to be throwing at a very high speed with quick pulling gestures. Is the purpose of that to quickly make the pot and reduce its exposure to water?

  • Do you ever trim the base to make a foot ring? Or is it typical for larger things to have flat bottoms?

  • what kind of clay do you use

  • are those just little plated you put on the wheel? my teacher is always far to baked to teach me anything worth remembering. All kids do in my class are make giant bongs....

  • @bboy9955 They're called 'bat's. Yes, they just have small holes in them so you can attach them to the actualy machine.

  • you are so good

  • THE TAPPING!!!!!!!!!! ARGGG

  • the greek make em' better

  • amphora what a cool word. Great job, you're really fast

  • Great work, one question -- how thick are your walls before you start shaping it? I noticed you pulled up to a pretty great height beforehand, do you generally leave the walls just slightly thicker than you want while it's a cylinder, then begin shaping?

  • That was amazing! I am a beginner. You really inspire me!

  • Your work is impressive, I subscribed and look forward to seeing all the wonderful creations on your channel. =D

  • Dan,

Sky here again. Im in college now and haven't thrown in over a month. I miss the wheel more than i miss my home. Im going to try to get into the program here but i was wondering if you had any suggestions on what class i should take. Ive been throwing for 4 years now and they have a variety of classes from beginner to specific advanced classes.

  • Wow. Bravo, mighty impressive!

  • hi dan,

I've decided that i would like to attempt a glaze technique that's similar to a black figure vase style, only I'm not sure how to recreate the glaze technique. would you happen to have any idea if that style is possible with the use of terra cotta and/or white stoneware clay (since those are my only resources for the time)? if so, how?

  • the angle of taking this video for fellow pottery learner is absolutely awful. Can not see clearly what the potter's skillful hand motion and video has been edited to cut short the viewing time. Not helpful video clip at all.

  • dan are you at a workshop and use the potter's wheel there or did you buy your own?

  • Dan mate, that is a wonderful thing.

Was in the Greek National Museum this June and just have to start doing this. Local evening school doesn't start till mid Sept, so trying to find out all I can.

Thanks so much for the vid.

  • what are you doing with the paint brush at the end with the three lines?

  • Wow, your amazing... Im subscribing!

  • Beautiful. Simply beautiful

  • 3:55 hahaha

  • I wanna store my wine in one of these.

  • Dan- I have watched all of your videos, and have attempted the double cylinder and your lid method- thanks for the help! I have a question about kilns- would you know if you can keep a gas kiln out doors on a deck? I'm concerned about ventilation and breathing in chemicals.

  • @luvpottery I don't see why not so long as you don't sit it on anything flammable like a wooden deck and you have it far enough away from the house.

    Cheers.

  • can u make me one? :D

  • How do you get you handles to attach so well? When I try to attach my handles, they always slide off and droops down...

I use slip to attach it... Should I let my handles dry for awhile?

  • Yeah, what clay are you using? It seems way easy to handle!

  • Dan, how do you keep pulling without the top spreading out?

  • Was that a puff of smoke at 4:12?

  • @guitargodgod it looked like his breath

  • hey dan nice potteries

  • what kind of clay are you throwing with?

  • I'm a big fan of your work, but I really think you've outdone yourself with this one. Great job.

  • After watching your vid, i want to get back to the throwng wheel again and feel the clay which i have not done for many years after moving into a smaller house=(

  • im in high school and i want to make this. can you tell me how big the cylander should be before i start forming it? and how tall is the vase when your done?

  • Hi Dan,

Did you have much water in the bottom of these pots. You do like the water, have you tried a profile tool while you are making the pot to smooth it out. Also have you tried pulling a handle off the pot, it could make for a smoother transistion from pot to handle plus it would be faster. I'm more with you than against you, keep up the great work.

  • you are so awesome!

  • Were can u get a spinner thingy at?? Ive been doing it by hand,...nothing and it sucks!!!!!!....Your a very good pottery artist

  • WOW....the day I can do that, I'll call myself a potter! I would like to be able to replicate all of the Greek pottery vessels. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • did he just glue the handles on there?

  • He may have used a sodium silicate + water solution, also called "magic water"...help mend cracks too.

  • Nice job! I'm trying to make these handles in class now! awesome...great job

  • what do you use as an adhesive for your joints? I noticed you don't score the pot or the handle, is the way you are doing it just as efficient, and strong?

  • Thanks for the video! My wife and I were just reading about a potter in Jeremiah 18 with our 3-year old and she didn't understand. She found your video to be very instructive! :)

  • Couple quick things i noticed if you didn't know, or for those who may be watching. If you become off centered in the lip like the Amphora was at the very end, you can apply even pressure with you non-dominate hand - using your thumb and middle finger - to the lip, and press down gently with a finger on your dominate hand and it will force the clay to slowly move back onto center, or if you have enough clay you could just trim the top, although I don't like doing that.

  • what clay body are you using??

  • hello classiv class

  • very nice i just got in to the pottry wheel class at my school im very excited

  • What a masterful first attempt! Keep the videos coming. As a student of pottery I am eager to hear some tips, tricks, and instruction while you are throwing. I see now that I need to improve the time it takes to throw a piece. I will try the Greek vase when next I throw. What an inspiration, thanks.

  • The next day, inspired by this video, I threw a tall Greek vase. Quickness was key. Thanks for the lesson.

  • koolness

  • May you be blessed and your new year be prosperous. Charles Eaton

  • wow. im ok on the wheel. but whenever i get it past 10 or so inches my walls warp. any advise?

  • Hey youdanxx i am a beginner like i said in my earlier comments and i was wondering if you could check something out for me.....you see the pottery wheel i had crapped out and i was wondering if you could check out this other one i want to buy...its from harbor freight tools i am just looking for something not to expensive that will last at least one year then i look for other options... can you plz check this pottery wheel out...?

  • How long have artist made a Greek / Roman Amphora vase?

  • What did you band the pot with before putting the handles on?

  • sweet power pull, man! Also, we just learned how to pull handles in class. I hated it!

  • Dan...are you left handed or right handed? I just started throwing in my college class and im going to try your technique on centering. Does it matter what direction the wheel is spinning?

  • I am left handed but I seem to throw right handed.

Generally most wheels spin anti clockwise.

So the clay is turning away from your hands and fingers rather than coming towards it.

I tried to throw a pot once on a wheel spinning clockwise and couldn't make anything.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • @youdanxxx

damn you how are you so good ?

im having trouble closing up the up or "choking" it as my ceramics teacher says

  • @Tokidoki4Me Hi, at my read if you are right handed the wheel turns counter clockwise, and clockwise if you are left handed. :)

  • Great Job!

  • Dan, What temp do you fire to when you use an oxide in the slip what is the ratio of oxide to slip? Also, I assume it's a one time firing for these pots.

Warm regards from Debbie in Sunny Florida

  • Hi,we do a biscuit firing with an oxide slip then a glaze firing as with all the other stuff,so twice fired as normal.

As for the ratio of oxide to slip it really depends on which oxide you use and how strong you want the colour to show through the glaze.

We use anything from 2oz -8oz of oxide per half gallon of slip depending on what sort it is.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • It is simply a joy to watch you at work. It also really makes me miss the pottery classes I took in college. Perhaps I should take a class again.

    Beautiful work!

  • Nice work Dan, I love the shape.

  • Wow what a great video. What kind of clay did you use for it? Do you have one that is fired up, so we can see the final product?

  • What kind of clay do you use?

  • and how tall was this piece?

  • hey Dan, any chance of a guideline on how much clay you start with and the overall finished dimensions of your pots - want something to aim for!

  • nice throwing... but you dont score for the handles?

  • No need to score the clay for handles.

If the clay is soft enough and you use slip they're fine.

I've never had any break off anyway.

    Cheers,Dan

  • oh cool i always thought of that but my teacher told me it wouldnt work thanx!

  • That is amazing.

  • Very sweet, hope to make something like this soon. Took ceramics this year, and love it. Bought a wheel and have the whole summer to throw things, I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the help....

  • Thanks Dan I love to watch you throw;-) I was wondering how much clay you use to throw this amphora.

Have a nice day ~ Karen

  • Wow ur really good! I just started to learn to do this its really fun. The only hard part is to center it. I LOVE CLAY!WOOHOO

  • hey, i was just wondering what your thought is on trimming/ turning foots on the bottom of pots? i accept that its a just a slight difference but was just wondering why?

    zac

  • God, I miss my pottery wheel so much... =(

Anyone know where to buy a cheap one???

  • Wow absolutely amazing, I'm taking cermics this is my first year but I am amble to throw many things the advance students are doing. I really want to due something like this. !

  • how long did it take you to make it?

what did you use to make those lines on the pottery?

is there a way i can make that pottery wheel at home, using home supplies?

i want to make that for my Latin Project!!

plz help and hurry!! thnk you ;]

  • wow, really really awesome. did u major in ceramics?

  • Hi,no,never went to College, just taught myself with some help from my Dad.

    ..

My philosophy is : Those who can - do.

    Those who can't - teach

    LOL !!!!

  • My philosophy is :

Those who can't - teach poorly

Those who can but can't teach - teach poorly

Those who can and can teach - accomplish that which is impossible for any of the above people

  • okay....major inspiration here...Thanks

  • As always the pot is grand. Thank goodness you are self-taught, if someone had trained you , you may have never developed your graceful technique and style. The lesson to us all is"trust in yourself".

  • Dan:

What kind of bats are you using? They sound metal. Thanks for the videos. I'm really enjoying them and your web sites great. Tham=nks again.

  • The bats are a kind of resin / vinyl based material.

They're pretty hard so that's why they might sound metal.

  • Brilliant again!!! I look forward to your videos. When I saw you pull the neck of the vase up I couldn't believe there was that much clay there to get the height! Also enjoyed watching the handle attaching process. GREAT!

  • hey Dan a friend of mine recently asked me to make her a "Tagine" ,a Moroccan cooking dish, i looked them up online to get an idea, but i don't really know how to go about throwing a lid like that? any idea's?

  • I've never made one myself.

Just throw a tapering cone shape with no bottom in the pot.

I wouldn't attempt to make it upside down with the narrow bit at the bottom though.

You'll probably need to tidy the bottom up a bit by hand once you cut it off.

    Just have a go.

  • But then again you could throw it upside down keeping it a bit wider at the base then when you trim it upside down throw another tapering point on the top to get the pointed shape.

  • looks very nice dan, i love your videos, nice shape, thrown quick and you have your own unique style

  • Thanks Dan i love the way you throw. I read your website and it seems you guys have a LOT of fun there at the shop. sorry to hear about the horses. What was the weight of that piece you started with there....8lbs?

  • Thanks.

The clay was about 4-5lbs in weight.(about 2/3 of a 7lb stick from the pug mill).

It was throwing really well for some reason and I managed to get it pretty thin, and a decent size for the weight of clay.

    Cheers,Dan

  • Great skills. Thanks for sharing.

  • nice!!

  • beautiful....Now you need to paint a couple of naked bearded guys running around the center.

  • Mow that's a great video!

  • beautiful:)

  • I admire your skills and willingness to share those with us. I do find it difficult to see your hand placement when you film from the front. Also I would like to request a video of you trimming one of your one piece goblets. Thank you so much.

  • The trouble is that to my right : your left as you view is a wall so I can't put the camera any further that way so you can't see my fingers from the back.

As for trimming a goblet ,there's not much that happens apart from sharpening the profile.

I don't hollow the stem out or anyting as It's narrow enough to be laft as is.

I will try to show it though if I remember.

    Thanks,Dan

  • Thanks, I teach a lot your videos

I love to see you work.

  • this looks fun to try.

oh, and thanks for the vids, i mimic your style a bit.. and it is pretty flashy compared to other people :]
