I used to watch Bill Dana, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleeson (did anyone really think all New Yorkers were like Cramden and Norton?) They were comedians. Is it any better that George Lopez (another funny man) can poke fun because he IS Hispanic? People, if you can't laugh at yourselves you aren't going to last long! Humor is only successful if we can connect, if we can see ourselves in it. Hate and intolerance are bad, humor is not. Tolerance works both ways, you have to learn to tolerate US as well.
Let me get this straight.. It's perfectly alright for pasty white guys to be portrayed and characterized as bumbling, idiot fools on TV and in the movies but it's NOT ok to poke fun at anyone that isn't a gringo, honky, cracker, fag, Muslim, socialist, communist etc, etc.
Oh gee!! I hope it's OK to use the word "fag" again,, I think someone changed the rules again and it's OK, I'm not sure! Some one please tell us white, Christian males what we are aloud to say and think..
As time passed, Dana realized that such ethnic humor by a person not of that ethnic group was becoming offensive. Hispanic groups began protesting Dana's portrayal of the dim-witted Hispanic character. In 1970, Dana announced to ten thousand Mexican Americans attending a cultural pride festival that "after tonight, José Jiménez is dead". In 1997 Dana received an image award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition.
Dad would totally crack up at these skits on "The Best of Steve Allen" which the Disney channel ran a long time ago. I still have some of these shows on tape. BTW, dad was from Puerto Rico.
The comedian's obligation is to be funny. Our shared obligation as individuals is to exercise compassion and respect for our fellow human being and to serve a constructive function within society. I have a feeling that it wasn't Dana's intention to marginalize Hispanics or to portray the character in a way that reflects their behavior, nor was it to foment negative sentiment or misconceptions.
Egalitarianism isn't descriptive, but prescriptive: we ought to treat others as if they are the same.

I had Puerto Rican friends when I was growing up. I never Felt any hostility toward them or toward any other Hispanic because of José Jiménez.
Besides, José Jiménez never claimed to be Hispanic. He said that his native country was Israel, and he explained the reason why he spoke with an accent was that the "Hewish people speak Jeebrew."
bill dana was a good comedian in his time.....and his puerto rican accent did not represent the people of puerto rico.....i myself laughed at his jokes and was a viewer of his programs.....yet i am sadened by how many "bigots" use the "posts" to make their ignorant views of other races and cultures.....no one is better than the other and we all "shit" from the same hole in the same place it usually is.......and everybody's bathroom smells the same........lol
You are truly full of crap. I live in France, and let me tell you, Rouen, my city is now full of criminals from North Africa. They are NOT from Sweden or Norway. And we have now not only Great Mosques, but anti-semitic, hate for Christian Slogans, Hate for Jewish diatribes, hate for France(the country that allows them here), and contant "In your Face-" and reserve the right to humiliate and denegrate and do crime, as we provide welfare state. R U NUTS?
Yeah those hispanics sure are stupid. oh it's ok he's not hispanic. Sure wish we could do black face like we did in the good old days. Lets go string up some darkie. you should listen to what u sound like before you say something so stupid.
@mreloid Very sad that people who look at others as being "stupid" are at the same time ignorant. It shows in their words. A cold heart is worse than an empty mind.

People who insult or threaten other people over the internet are obviously very smart.
They know that there's an ocean of cyberspace separating them from their enemies, and therefore they never have to actually face them.
