  • An absolute beautiful and extraordinary performance from Mr. Duc Thanh.

Its sound is so touching and delicate, as if the music has a soul in itself.

I am speechless with its beauty, especially for the last movement, from 3:07 till the end.

  • just out of curiousity, how much is a decent dan bau if purchased from vietnam? in USD if possible please! thanks!

  • of course Dan Bau la cua vietnam. it is none of China. as all to say, when you traveler-refugee-conqueror whatever arrive to new place to settle, only yourself is of old country, which means nothing now. all the rest belong to the new place from food to materials to culture

  • wat is the song title???

  • haha well i meant if they made it here i think. but thanks^^

  • Believe this or not..I cried when I was listening to this. It drove me back my childhood. Thank you for this..keep it up ..Love from Germany

  • wow, u should not listen this music any more.....

  • The best thing about his videos is the fan he ocasionaly has blowing his hair majestically about.

  • i'm sorry to spoil it. But this Uniquely Traditional Vietnamese Music. If u can't find chinese music. too many slurs to semitones to be chinese.

    Vietnamese Traditional Music.

    The clip should be re-edited.

  • the song is ORIGINALLY Chinese but Pham Duc Thanh made it his own, just as all musicians do. Plus he plays it on đàn bầu so of course there will be many decorations added.

  • some chinese dialects have more tones than Vietnamese. this one resembles Vietnamese, but it's one of the dialects that actually has FEWER tones than Vietnamese.

  • Comment removed

  • your music send me back to 100 year,s ago i love your music.

  • Fantastic perfomance.

    Fine, brilliant and beautiful sounds.

I really enjoyed this music and I appreciate the choice of your video.

    Thanks for sharing it.

    I added to my favourites.

  • I am a Chinese, I enjoy the music very much. The music is absolutely Chinese traditional music. However, I have to say that the instrument is originate from south asia long ago, probably Vietnam or Burma. By the way, acturally China has been administered those islands for more than two thousand years. I think you should study more about the history of both Vietnam and China.

  • the dan bau is one of two musical instruments unique to viet nam

  • Phamducthanh is a great musiker.

I knew him and his wife during their performance in Hamburg.

It would be nice for him and for Vietnam music if a good manager, who would oranise uan introduce his music further to the world.

    I wich him much success.

  • dam didnt think something sooooo simple can create such an amagize sound.

  • yo simon...ta yeuuuuuuuuule....xD

  • OMG THIS GUY TAUGH ME DAN TRANH WHEN I WAS 11 at montreal!!!! SHIETT!!!I SAW HIM IN THE MOST PARIS BY NIGHT AND VAN SONG(i guess van son) HE'S AWESOME...but i quit to play dan tranh(i think its too girly)....

  • Incredible! Love this! Dan Bau, Dan Co and Dan Tranh are music for the soul... Well I guess Vietnamese Soul. Listening to these kind of music and thinking of what our culture have become is undescribable. Years from now, the children of those who were exiled will forget everything and the people in Viet Nam will be overwhelmed by greed due to poverty and our culture will vanish or blend in with the rest of the world. It's a matter of time. China is trying to annex some of our land already.

  • go read about Duxianqin, it said is originate from vietnamese

  • this intrument was exist before the chinese one does, u need to read more about ur history and culture dumb ass

  • Hey fucking Viet American faggot your kind is the shame of all Asians so shut ya hole mother fucker. I am Vietnamese born in Vietnam u fuck! All I am saying is that this is one unique instrument native to us Vietnamese.

  • chinesevietguy ur a dumb ass, this type of intrument u only see them play in southern china not northern china, cuz most stuff in southern china r copy from us viet, cantonese ppl copy their shit from viet all the time, and vietnam do have a legend for this intrument too, the cantonese copy their shit from viet

  • dont talk about politics on a non-political video

    btw great song

  • SaiGonKidz ain't even Viet.

  • dan bau was created by vietnamese.

  • If you're gonna rep the country at least spell it right.

and the Chinese Du Xian Qin came from Dan Bau so its origin is Vietnamese.

  • Ok its obviously a typing error but my English is ok. Well where u get that info from ? Well musical instrument is not really what I study but love listening to old traditional works.

  • On Wikipedia it says Vietnamese refugees brought it to China. If you don't trust Wikipedia, every website about dan bau will say it is purely Vietnamese. I don't read Chinese but I assume websites about duxianqin will mention it originating from Vietnamese too.

Same here, I love listening to traditional music, especially Asian. I kinda got tired of classical even though I study it for piano.

  • even so, you should say that above in such manners

  • Hey! Can can't even lift my littele finger after the stick! Believe me!

  • Music is the language of the world!

  • wow impressve such a mind blower! just magnificent

  • What an awesome instrument!

The only people who could say that this instrument is easy are people who themselves AREN'T musicians! The untrained viewer just sees a guy plucking one string. But anyone with an ear for melodic sequencing, trills, and rhythmic subtleties realizes just how fine and sensitive the instrumentalist must be!

  • That's so real mad skills! I wish I can play that good!

  • Lovely music. I don't really care what is the origin of this instrument. (Im Chinese, I think this is 100% viet instrument and music). The only thing it matters is how good the musician plays. Dan is a very talentive musician, I was surprised that how can he play such a good music by an instrument with only one string, you got to give him a big credit. Respect.

  • his name is Thanh, Dan Bau is the name of instrument

  • @kelvinkawinglo

    Vous avez raison :)

  • @kelvinkawinglo Agree.

  • 3:08 to the end...OMG awesome!

  • Fantastic! A virtuoso! I wonder how many people who watched this video realize how difficult it is to play this instrument well...I especially love the part when the palm is left on the string to create the pizzicato tone...totally amazing!

  • This is a friendly rebuttal to the following comment:

    michaelbryant21 (3 weeks ago)

how hard could it possibly be to play an intrument with one string

Please revisit the video and observe his left hand, which controls not only the length (pitch) of the music, but also the tone, in the same manner as a guitar player with multiple strings. Except in this case, the performer "only" has the benefit of a single string, while having to hit extremely divergent tones and variations.

  • don't underestimate it. it's pretty hard! try yourself and see. XD

  • no actually it is a vietnamese instrument brought over to china by those who migrated during the 16th century. look it up on wikipedia. if you got facts that say it's from china, link it or give the search phrase to use on wikipedia.

I'm just believing it's from Vietnam because I see this instrument's use in more Vietnamese culture than Chinese, and many sites I keep running into implies Vietnamese origin.

I know there's a Chinese version, but version's no relation to historical origins.

  • I would LOVE to see you try... actually I would pay for that. xD if you actually saw this video you should have seen how difficult it really is. Maybe there are other instruments with one string which are easy to play, but this one seems a little bit more of a challenge.

  • what are you talking about flip? you know shit about our culture, so shut the hell up.

  • this instrument from Vietnam, only Vietnam

  • this instrument from Vietnam, only Vietnam

  • yupe dan bau only belongs to vietnamese people. :-)

  • when people in the World see this instrument they just think this come from Asian people.

  • If so, that may be because there are plenty of hard dumbasses around the globe.

  • To PAKDEAHAN :TILA TEQUILA said that she love you.You should know that she is cambodian ; that is pretending to be viet. She is not viet, so dont hate her. By the way, the photo send to you by she is taiwanese girls

  • Thank you Dan Bau, another great one.

  • i think you mean Thanh. Dan Bau is the instrument. :)

i should know. my brother's name is Thanh. haha.

  • reminiscing vietnam right now .this song is great..

  • thank you for the lovely cross between 2 cultures

  • Pham Duc Thanh, I just love you! Your music is so soulful. I lived in Vietnam for 3 years and enjoyed every second of it, adored your culture and music so much i married a vietnamese man. I wish i could get a Dan bau here, i would love to learn it.

    Keep posting your music please!!!!

  • i've been wanting to get one myself, but it's kinda expensive. anyone here from the US that bought one?

  • The musician used a Vietnamese instrument to play Chinese notes? Got confused!

  • what are you confused about? you can play other country notes with any other country's intruments, duh

  • THEN WHY THE HELL U BOTHER TO WATCH THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE ASSHOLE. USE YOUR TIME WISELY NEXT TIME, i GUESS U ARE TOO DUMB TO DO THAT SINCE U THINK USING ONE STRING IS FOR "UNCIVILIZED PEOPLE." IF U WANT TO OTHERS TO RESPECT YOUR CULTURE, U SHOULD RESPECT OTHERS TOO...BUT I GUESSU'RE TOO IMMATURE TO KNOW THAT!

  • MY RESPONSE IS FOR PAKDAEHAN

  • I would recommend to the person maintaining this video that the comments by PakDaeHan be removed.

  • If you say you haven't failed then it means you haven't done anything.

  • Only a very intelligent and accomplished people could take that one string and produce such a large variety of sound from it. Think about the harp. It has something like 40 strings, and I don't think that it has anything over Dan Bau.

  • Cung le is a little achieved, what i want vietnam go more in economic and technology..don't forget without economic and technology vietnam is behind. We both knew in secrets vietnam and china shared blood. Yue people in Quangdong,Quangxi,Hongkong, shared YueNan blood too. Even, we don't like each other because history but the truth can not erase.

  • I'll pak dae shit out of you...han-dastand?

  • shit and poo means the same thing...LOL you're such a retard... ;-)

  • Right, and you know everything. I bet you're just a poor ass that can't appreciate any culture. Don't hate on anything except your own failure in LIFE.

  • beautiful and absolutely magnificent. My father just bought one from Vietnam and I'm eager to learn how to play this thing. It's hard as hell to play.

  • Monocord is unique in Vietnam....It's not belong to any country besides Vietnam....so...dont say stupid things like that.....

"Một dây nũng nịu đủ lời,

Nửa bầu chứa cả 1 trời âm thanh"

  • I am his student, I am chinese.I love vietnam, Just respect him.I am studying vietnamese and Dan bau.I went to Vietnam couple times.there are 1000 and 1000 chinese who studying this instrument in Hanoi and Ho chi minh city .

  • Yes ..Karate,Judo,Tekwondo,Vovinam all belong to chinese. because in china some minorities group used. Sushi and vietnamese Pho belong to chinese too....and pizza made in china too..Honda and Samsung belong to china too..because some people in china used and made it ...so it original from china ....Ok are you happy

  • ok. Vietnamese are chinese too. Vietnam is also a province of china too. United states used to be a china province 3 thousand years ago then the ice age has seperated united states away from china....

This was told by Tsmao the greatest communist leader of the world !!!!

  • U stupid...Chinese is chinese...Vietnamese is vietnamese....

  • vietnamese were influences by the chinese a lot cause chinese used to had control over vietnam for thousands of years

  • Ok, if people from vietnam still would say that specific instrument belongs to vietnam. Then I can simply say it also belongs to China because there is a minority group in China called JING, which is ethnically the same as people in Vietnam. They also use this instrument. Therefore, techically, we can also say it is Chinese.

However, I do think it is useless to agrue about it. Just enjoy that music and try out best to let westerners know and play this. That is more interesting!!!

  • Hi, guys, relax. How can you really say what instrument is whose in East asia? China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam share so much culturally. You guys ever saw westerners argue about which country violin belongs to?

  • thang 4 vegue. sao seng and ew neh gu mah and wo cao ni zhi zhu zong! and ding lei gor fai yeet nham pok kai!

  • dau bau la cua trung quoc....thiet het noi noi chinese traditional music???? nghe tuc cuoi wa'

  • ew neh geu mah and ngoa ding lei gor fai!

  • you people are so dense it makes me sad. if you didn't understand the heading the song is a chinese song, but he's playing it with a vietnamese instrument. is that so difficult for people to understand? jesus

  • confirm that. Its Vietnamese instrument. Why did you say that dispite your vietnamese nickname

DAN BAU IS THE MONOCHORD INSTRUMENT OF VIETNAMESE

  • Yes," dan bau" or monochord instrument is the unique instrument of Vietnamese. And i think there is no any kind of chord instrument like this one in the world since it can play any kind of music as well as rhythm only with one string. I am proud of this Vietnamese instrument.:)

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful music. You are truly a master of the Dan Bau!

    John F

  • In my life, my most precious will is bring happiness to everyone by my music. Thank you stridonsio.

    -Pham Duc Thanh

  • pham duc thanh is one of the most famous traditional viet musicians. he is truly a treasure to vietnamese with his mastering of many traditional vietnamese instruments and his appearance on PBN videos, bringing traditional vietnamese flare to overseas vietnamese audiences. I'm so amazed he actually has a youtube account now :D I'm excited to watch all the videos to come!

  • ok i dont get it, apparantly this is a chinese song but you are using a vietnamese instrument, how come? in stead of a guzheng?

  • ..and why not? to show the diversity of the instrument, bring something new, etc.

  • just asking, i dont know anything about chinese and vietnamese music, thats why

  • First of all it's not a song...piece would be more accurate.

  • whatever, like you are using correct terms, you said first of all and you didnt follow with anything else, so then its not first, its the only one

  • I'd expect that from someone like you. Ever wondered why you don't know anything???

  • Hi Cacalacapoo.
