This is like the fucking comedy dungeon, it's the least funny environment, absolute worst crowd in history, ever, they're like zombies, least charismatic or interesting host, and lowest budget possible. If you can be funny here, then you KNOW you're good! Guess what folks, Norm's in training, this show is like the Rocky montage, he's lifting tree trunks and running in the snow-covered mountains. Guy's gonna knock Chris Kattan's ass out! And then hopefully take a shot at Olmeyer
The movie referenced is David Lynch's "The Straight Story". It's a pity nobody recognized it. Norm's impersonation is bare-bones, as usual, but he got the dialogue right. He is a craftsman.
@togo8186 There is no audience. Tom Green does it from his house. The people that are laughing are the people who work on the set and friends that stop by on occasion.
If I could compare norm's comedy to a music genre, it would be prog rock. He fuckin jokes in odd time signatures. I never laugh just cuz im trying to intellectually break down what he said, and find the punchline which is sometimes not even their JUST for the sake of awkward laughter. Its genious
Alot of Tom Green bashers out here on youtube. I saw Tom's standup and it was great, he has opened for Norm, and Norm has been on his show almost more than anyone. And Norm is one of the funiest people alive today.
Norm chooses to do an impression of an obscure actor that no one knows, rather than one of his stock impressions from his repertoire (Bob Dole, Letterman, Larry King, Burt Reynolds) that people know and love, because he refused to be put on the spot and "perform" for some random dude, Mike in Canada. So instead of doing the expected, which is "perform" a famous impression for Mike and the audience, he ironically subverts it and the joke then becomes his choice of impression (a Norm meta-joke).
@ChrisZ70 There have been some complaints about me not cutting the beginning off this clip and just going straight to the impression. I thought set-up was necessary so that the viewer can appreciate the kind of bizarre, weird atmosphere in the room that necessitated the Farnsworth impression...
@LordThree Yeah? Well that you included what preceded the impression was very good, because the "uncomfortable" context had to be considered so that a real understanding of Norm's humor here can be had. -- Of course, Norm marches to the beat of his own drummer always, so that even in normal talkshow contexts he is ironic and subversive (as on The View) and does things that are funny inasmuch as they are unexpected, subtle, obscure, ironic, wry, surreal even. Norm is fascinatingly funny.
@ChrisZ70 You insinuate Norm was insulted or offended by the audacity of the question but I think he just thought it'd be funny to do a totally obscure and unexpected "impression".
That was funny. Farnsworth was a good actor but actually had a boring quality about him. So trust MacDonald to pick an obscure actor making a story as boring as possible. Yes, it actually made me laugh. And I agree. Too bad we had to sit through the first four minutes.
That was great. Would have been better if the vid started around 4:11 or so and nobody had to see the other parts of this awkward, badly produced show.

Conan and Norm are a better combo

@TheAgentAssassin True. It seems like Norm is over all most comfortable with Conan, although I do like seeing him with Tom Green.

Not very good impression of a very moving moment from "The
Straight Story," especially given the content of the impression, i.e., somebody unknowingly killing a friend.

Richard Farnsworth obscure? Well, well now, did you know he was actually in Gone With The Wind?!? Yes, 1939. Uncredited, sure, but he was in it.
