That was a totally awesome concert!!!! ELP basically challenged the laws, ending festivals like this at 10 or 11 pm. They asked, "What are they going to do? Arrest all of us?"
Any others out there, that was there? We sat between the two towers.
The rainbow was just a sign of peace and harmony with so many people paid and 2x as many that crashed their way in? it was insane. imgaine trying to go pee.. I went to both Calif Jams but this one was a learning experience for sure. peace rock n roll.
@AbsoluteZeroMusic I really hope it didn't take you until three weeks ago to figure this out. Also check out Michael Schenker ( UFO ) Rory Gallagher, Ace Frehley of KISS, Mel Galley of Trapeze, and the bands Krokus, Judas Priest and Triumph.
coverdale should never have sang this song he sounds like a 17 year old nerd with braces ian gillan is the only person who should ever sing this also the bass isn't nearly as good as glover
@missmeleeRS the bass played is much better tha glover ever was. And the bass player happens to be known as the voice of rock as well ! Coverdale sounds great on this song, as on every song he sings. Maybe you just dont like someone that doesnt scream all the time ? :)
They should have dropped this song from their set as soon as Ian Gillan left. Coverversion has no right to sing this song and the fact that they needed two vocalists to sing this is proof positive that the only person who should sing this classic is the great Ian Gillan.
@Sargebri they didnt need two vocalists.. They complemented each other. And now they could sing something that wasnt just in a higher range and boring. They could be more diverse, and sing all kinds of music :)
Gillan sang in one way all the time, which he was great at, but it was becoming a bit boring, as gillan himself said :) And it's stupid to call him coverversion to put him down, like you dont have a real argument, you must call him stupid names.
@Sargebri coverdale made a name for himself with whitesnake, selling more in one record than purple did in many years, a purple-related record has never sold as much as the 87-album not even a purple record! Last UK top 20 album: sometime in the late 80ies. All Whitesnake albums (except the current one) since 1980 has been UK top 10 albums !
And btw gillan cant sing today, it is a shame, because he used to be good.
i love this line up...i mean they are all geniouses! But for me the only "real" DEEP PURPLE is the gillan-ritchie-roger-lord-paise .... not that the burn line up is bad...to the contrary...they are stunning...but the original deep purple sound has to have gillan on vox and roger on bass...imho
Shit...that is Cloverdale on lead vocals! And all this time I thought Gillan was still on at this point in history. Incidentally I saw Purple in New Hampshire in 04 and Gillan was lead vocals. They were FUCKING GRRRREAT!
I agree, I have loved Ritchie Blackmore for ages. For the 5 years that I have played guitar, I have nearly always learnt Depp Purple stuff. Ever since I was really into Deep Purple, I have decided never to quit guitar. Thanks Ritchie!!
Maybe the most important Rocksong forever. Everybody on the planet knows the tune. But the best version is Made in Japan - sorry David - with Ian Gillan.
Dont forget Glenn Hughes greatest singer ever walked on Earth. These two were the Lennon & McCartney of rock when they really worked together. Check out Glen Hughes now, hes even better, one of the few who can really pull it off live.
@davidthegarner Finelly someone who shares my opinion. Stormbringer is my favorite album of all time I love this Line-up Glenn is playing Dublin in October cant wait to finelly see him I have nearaly everything he has ever recorded
Smoke On The Water burned and tattooed with flames on your skind forever by Mr. Ritchie Blackmore's solo. That solo is one of the best in history, if not the best.
@kriston1989 Why does he suck so damn much? First he's poses as Ian Gillan, then Robert Plant. He's not even an artist. That's his whole freaking career! Just ass ripping off of other frontmen. DISGUSTING! NOw his voice is fucked completely up because he's been singing like Ian and Robert for 30 years. Fuck him.
@aaronscrewme no, fuck you ! :) he is one of the greatest vocalists of all time. In a poll he ended before Gillan btw :) He does not pose as Ian Gillan, he isnt anything like Gillan, thank God :) And this trying to be like Robert Plant is just stupid to me. If anything, he sang the blues like paul rodgers but :) he's a great artist and often ends up in polls as a better singer than Ian. He has sold more records than Ian. He couldnt have built such a sucessful career copying someone else!
@leppardsnake Reality is against you. He canceled whatever halfass tour because he can't be Plant, or Gillan. He even was with Jimmy Page you idiot., it's laughable. Wearing Plants bracelets, the exact same kind on stage, what a freak-show.
@aaronscrewme cancelled what tour? You mean the one with page, the US tour was cancelled because there wasnt enough demand. Funny part was plant took over many of the venues for the dates, who is following whom ? ;D
Weaing plants bracelets, the exact same kind of stage, now that was stupid of you to say. A man is can wear whatever he wants to. His voice is not even a lik plants or gillans.. More like paul rodgers :) but he is better than Rodgers, he is the greatest vocalist of all time!
@leppardsnake "Weaing plants bracelets, the exact same kind of stage, now that was stupid of you to say." Sorry kid, it's the truth. You have no say in the matter. "is the greatest vocalist of all time!" Wow fuck no.
@aaronscrewme well it is stupid of you to say such a thing, since what does that has to do with anything? If you are to compare things, it'd be the vocals, right ? And they are not similar at all. Coverdale is a baritone and a blues man..
I have no say in the matter, haha.. ofc I do, we all do.
@hernandez37219 Freddie Mercury is incredibly, but he is so overrated, he could never touch Gillan, Plant, Cornell, or even Buckley for that matter, and a few other people, but to all these people calling Coverdale a copycat, he is one of the greatest voices of all time. For a short period of time in both Whitesnake, and with Jimmy Page, vocally you could say he sounded like he was trying to copy Plant, but that hasn't been his entire career. The majority of the time he was in Deep Purple
@hernandez37219 He sounded absolutely nothing like Gillan, so how was he copying Gillan? He wasn't at all, he was trying to sing bluesy, and soulful, and rough. The majority of all the high screams in Deep Purple that could even be compared to Gillan at this time were all done by Glenn Hughes, and Coverdale just sounded like himself.
