I would suggest that you look up Texas v White. The Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution forbids any state to secede. Such a secession would be viewed as a act of treason.

It comes up every session in the state legislature and most who support the idea are fringe republicans. There are dems who support it, but they are conservative democrats. In reality, the provision allowing Texas to legally succed from the union has expired. I believe it expired about 10 years ago.
