Dosen't the cabinet have a slight effect on sound? Well dosent it make it sound a bit deeper? I know for sure the strength, and cone material plays a role correct me if I'm wrong.
@emersiveav Its only shit if only 20 of those "watts" are making it to the driver. People dont know what real efficient amplifiers sound like. 100watts can sound like 1000watts if the 1000watt amplifier is horribly inefficient.
vwestlife, bonejob knows what he's talking about. The woofers may actually be quite good. The end result is the sound after all and those other homemade speakers you bought at the thrift shop used a small woofer with a small magnet. You said the horn tweeters were heavy. If they are made of metal you might get better sound with a pair of piezo tweeters.
By the way, the size of a woofer's magnet is NOT a reliable measure of its quality. Bigger is NOT always better. Magnet size and strength, voice coil type and configuration, cone material - ALL have implications for the final electrical and acoustic properties of the woofer. And these properties, combined with the enclosure type, size and construction have implications for the overall performance of the speaker SYSTEM. Magnet size tells you NOTHING USEFUL about the final quality of a speaker!
@bonejob My complaints were more about the inferior paper cones than about the size of the magnets. Certainly, vintage Alnico magnet speakers often have amazing sound quality despite using relatively tiny magnet sizes.
@vwestlife I don't recall that I EVER said anything about the size of the magnets(?). As you say, the size of the magnets means little. And BTW, paper cones are NOT necessarily inferior! Dynaco A-25's - in their day - easily held their own against products several times their price. Especially impressive was their freedom from colorations in the bass and lower midrange. Those "inferior" paper woofers with tiny magnets could reproduce solid bass and handle 200+ w/ch from my Dyna Stereo 400 amp.
I don't know where you got those speakers, but those are NOT genuine Dynaco speakers! Real Dynaco never, NEVER used horn tweeters - always soft domes. Real Dynaco speakers were made during the 1960's and 1970's in Denmark by SEAS or Scan-Speak. The speakers you show were made in the 90's - most likely in Asia - for Panor Corporation, the company now owning the Dynaco name. To be blunt, these are CRAP! Despite their use of the Dynaco name, they have NO connection to the beloved classic Dynacos.
@bonejob These speakers were made by ESS, who bought out Dynaco in 1979. These may have been "new old stock" remaining from before Panor took over, because the box claimed these were "Made in USA", and the same speakers were also sold with the ESS brand name on them.
That Radio Shack speaker next to the ones you're showing has potential. I've built a few DIY full-range sets with that model and they sound really good. I'm down to my last pair that I might make some back loaded horns with some day. Mine are Part # 40-1043.
iv wached a simaler vid and basicly sed it dosnot mater wat size of mage. its how stroung they polorized it, SIZE does NOT matter its the strangth of magenet, not to start a fight i saw how they do it. But arguably it tends to be cuz of the material of metal. (srry about spel i is lazi ;))
Just get some REAL Dynaco speakers from the 70's. These look like white van speakers who shouldn't be wearing the Dynaco name. Look at the little bit of pillow stuffing in there, lol. Go get some real Dynaco's, and I'm sure you'll throw these speakers in the garbage once you hear them.
for the same price they offered two different finishes and designs one is the fake walnut look and the other is the black faced boxes the imitation walnut speakers used the beefier woofers
I just researched these speakers and they are not anything connected with the Dynaco Co of Philadlephia. The original Dynaco made some top quality speakers with real walnut veneer, and had high reviews. These are just imports and they just stamp any name on them Dynaco or ESS. They never had a high value of 299.00. I think their ads are very misleading.
I am not real sure, but these speakers do not seem to be what the original Dynaco Co of Philadelphia made. Dynaco went out of business in the 1980's. They made some quality speakers, and a small speaker that was built in Denmark. Is it possible these are less expensive imports just using the old Dynaco name. I just can't see this many speakers being left over new old stock from a company that went out of business in the 1980's.
That's great that the seller is going to make good on your purchase. From what you and BurtonCharlesSmith have said, they are a great inexpensive speaker for a computer room or workshop, but not good for HiFI use, they may also work for the rear channels of a surround sound, but I'd have to listen to them. The last thing I need is more stuff around the house, so I think I'll pass.
The seller agreed to take back the speakers and they said they'll open up and check the replacement speakers they're sending me to make sure they're the "good" ones.
kinda remind me of MTX speakers. sound good but if you really want some good speakers get Paradigm or Polk audio i have a set of both and they sound REALLY good..
The quality of the cabinets is actually quite good, I think. Considering the OK sound of the cheapo woofers, I think high quality woofers stand a good chance of sounding great in these cabinets.
What I would try to do is see how that full-range sitting next to the one you took apart would sound in their, probobly would help with the midrange on them.
Yeah, that's a Radio Shack speaker I had on hand which I tried, but it sounds almost identical... it has the same kind of foam surround and paper cone and the magnet is about the same size, it just has the whizzer cone to enhance the highs a bit.

your driving those with a shit receiver so why bother with better woofers? really you have no idea of anything your talkign about.....

@vwestlife even 15 watts per can sound amazing... there's a huge "But" there..and has nothing to do with an obese woman.

I prefer paper cones for sound quality. They have never let me down. Treated paper that is.

@320bit that's why the most yamaha NS-10's are so revered for monitoring
mixes, they had a wood pulp mixture, and incidentally is very hard
to process so they discontinued them in 2001. Nature is always right.

My guess is that it's a "grab bag" you but the speakers and they just grab the next box and ship it.
Some time back I got some older Paradigm Phantom speakers with 8" woofers for $49 on ebay. (Cost $51 to ship them)
