Frankly, he has problems with his upper body. This might be hard to tell only in this video (except that he holds his arms in a strange position), but in other videos, because his upper body weight is not properly used, his entire move looks awkward. Put your weight forward, and try not to swing out your skis. You manipulate your skis using your body weight, not by using momentum (swinging).
I used the skiassistant videos to learn the basics before my very first lesson. In 2 hours I was turning and stopping to a level that the instructor was amazed. I owe this to this video as there were tips and ideas in here that really helped to build confidence. Thank you!
it will make life hard on the hips when how he's introducing a snow plough is totally not technically based. as an instructor trainer, he needs to consider the skills needed to make a wedge.
As a trained ski leader, and a PE teacher it is important to speak in language that people can understand, rather than a whole lot of technical jargon that will only confuse and overwhelm them.
you are right talking simply is important... but you need to teach skills / fundamentals. pushing your legs apart is not a skill. having you feet apart, and turning your legs to point the tips of the skis together would be more like it. edging is then a consequence of a wide stance. Notice how this is skill based, ready for the next step. pushing the feet apart will hinder them, as a very wide stance makes it hard to rotate the lower body. teach skills not maneuvers.

This is old stuff, skiing has changed, no one needs to learn a wedge, it's a waste of time and effort.

I'm afraid Snowplough can be quite tough on the legs, but it does get a bit easier when you progress to parallel turns. Stick at it!
