Never heard this by Sir Elton.....I believe Elton was going through some experimental things here...I love the hit single Mama Can't Buy You Love.....and this is just as good.....this puts Elton in much different style than he had been in through his early work....this is just good old fashioned pop music!! LOVE this!!
Jon Edwards and the immortal Detroit Spinners absolutely own this record. You gotta love Elton, the first white artist to perform on Soul Train, but the Spinners' vibe is something else. Further evidence, if any were needed, of the genius of Thom Bell a true SOUL giant.
@jaggass Not sure. But they re-released it in 2003 on Cd or cassette (both singles) I just remember buying this in 2003 in a cassette for 99p lol that was before HMV stopped selling tapes.
That's Not Philipe Wynne. That's John Edwards on co lead. Philipe Wynne had quit the spinners in 1977. Go back and listen to the difference between the Philipe's and John's voices. Philipe knew how to ad lib. John didn't
lol, the spinners guy just dominates it when he gets on, but sings in between every spaceu kinda feel for elton sometimes lol...and its funny how they made up that totally-added-in-last-second break, that led to elton singing by himself, and trying to spice up his own stuff a bit there, to match...haha...."I'm getting overshadowed boys...tell me this benjamin says different"..XD
@Broomfield1965 Jonathan Edwards sang the joint vocals with Elton John as Philipe "Soul" Wynne had left the group. This was a subdued version that shackled Jon vocally. In the '79 remake, the song was energized allowing Jon (who sang lead vocals) to fully exercise his vocals. As a fan of Elton John, IMHO, he seemed to be going through the motions while shackling Jon. On the other hand, when Jon and the Spinners were on their own, Jon showed how the song should be sung. He made it his own.
This takes me back to when I lived in England in 2003, i remember driving from Brighton back to London with a good friend between Xmas and New years and we were screaming our lungs off!!! Good times!!!

@CafeObsessionTV Agree - this was recorded in Fall 1977 (Philippe Wynne had left earlier that year) and that is Jonathan Edwards on the vocal.

Probably the last song he recorded that was any good, it's been crap ever since

I never knew that this version existed. I have the remixed version, which I really like, but this is a special treat. What a great sound!

Most excellent track from the Thom Bell sessions. I love the strings and the co vocals from Phillpe Wynne.

They really knew how to arrange music in the 70s.
