You are wrong about the position of the thumb. There is no standard position for the thumb since it depends on the size of the hand and what you are playing. There is a default hand position which is used at least 50% of the time. See my left hand videos under: murdick classical guitar lesson on youtube.

If you look at his fingers/left hand at around 50 seconds, it is perfect. He's got good technique, but he doesn't always explain it well, IMO.
