@PatMinchin I upoaded this video quite a few years ago, and unfortunately the sound no longer syncs to the video. I'm not sure why that happened. This is not the only video of mine this has happened to.
Does your left shoulder ever hurt? It looks like you're 'holding' your arm a bit. I can't quite see in your newer videos whether you're doing it still, but I'm currently in the process of resolving the same thing so I thought I'd point it out.
This performance was pretty close to flawless. I played this for my high school senior recital, but now I think I'm gonna play it for my college senior recital too. How did you memorize that second cadenza?? AMAZING!
Thanks for posting all your flute videos. Nice tone and control. Where do you study/teach? I am subscribing. Have you seen my flute teaching and performing videos yet? Tell me what you think. You should post your flute videos as video responses to my flute videos so more people will find your videos. It is part of my REAL FLUTE project to help flutists be heard and seen!
aw thank you! My sort of project is to bring more flute music into the internet, I post my performances to add to this large historic record of music and performances...if that makes sense haha..still figuring out how to word my thoughts. Anyway, I just graduated from Arizona State University under Elizabeth Buck who is truly a fantastic teacher and this fall I will be attending Mcgill University in Montreal in the fall...not sure who I wil be studying with then. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The recording is not very good, but it's great to find some moments of Dutilleux's music on You Tube. He has never done anything else than awesome masterworks and these musicians perfomed this Sonatine very well..
The funny thing is, this piece is performed quite frequently in the flute world, yet since Dutilleux wrote it as a student, he pretty much disowned it.
Dutilleux was not a student anymore when he wrote this Sonatine in 1943 (he won the "Prix de Rome" in 1938). But that's a fact that it is his first opus (with "Quatre Melodies pour Chant et Piano"). Everything requires a lot of time with Mister Dutilleux!! It's also true that he used to dislike his Sonatine, probably because it sounds too specifically french to his ears (!) Anyway, it is a masterpiece for millions musicians and listeners, and specially for a Debussy's lover like me..
@rasboras he used to dislike this sonatine, cause he felt there was something missing on it .... in fact this piece is so difficult to play becaused the ineterpreter has to put that notes he didn wrote ....
How come around the 1:58 mark you have the flute down but somehow seem to be playing it? hmmmmm
