Brings back some GREAT memories! I miss them! I still play their songs,& will never get tired of listening.
Saw Sly a few years back in SAN JOSE.Anybody else see him/them? I'd been blogging everywhere as to where is SLY,& out of the blue,he was playing closed by! What a THRILL!
First guy talking on this is Alan Leeds who worked very closely with Prince from about 82 through the early 90's. I think Alan poured over Prince his experience and insight which may have influenced Prince into some new directions and listen to broader avenues like Miles Davis. Alans brother Eric was Prince's main sax guy, incredible musician, he was big on Miles. All this is so interconnected, its wild. Its FUNK.
thanks, onyxworld, but I went to his website and doesn'tlook like him. All the gold/platinum records in the backgroung, I think it is a famous vocalist....any other ideas?
definitely wesbrooks @ 3:34 . name translated from the japanese in the upper left. you'll notice the cbs there in roman characters. search logan westbrooks of cbs records. he was the head of urban music for cbs.
Okay,I had a bad experience with Riot,I had it on cassette,it didn't have any lyric sheet or whatever,right...so,I tried to listen to it,and half the time,he sounded like he was drunk or something,I could never make out what he was sayin, and I just got irritated and gave up on it.
Thanks so much for posting this! This is from the "Rock n Roll" series that came on PBS back in 1995 and I've been looking high and low for this! Do you have the rest of this episode? So far I only see parts 3, 5 and 6...is there a 1, 2, and 4 somewhere else?
True - but Riot was a masterpiece. My 17 year old daughter caught right onto it the first time she heard it; loved it. It's timeless music, he was ahead of his time on Riot.
I would love to see a video of a live performance of Sly and the Family Stone's "Sex Machine". Does anyone out there have it? I heard it on the Sly's "Stand" album. It's about 14 minutes long. That song is the best instumental that I have ever heard! Fonkay! Incorporates blues, rock, gospel, jazz, everything!
you know that song around 3:50, "thank you for letting..."...I think Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis sampled that guitar lick for Janet Jackson's "Rythm Nation?"
I KNEW IT!!! I always thought so, cuz it had a VERY distinctive Strat sound, you know, that percussive attack, maybe even a Telecaster...I'm such a music nerd, ha ha... :)
i wish i understood japanese.

Yep, this is part of a series called the history of rock n roll. This is episode 8, the whole thing is worth watching though.

@habde Don't worry. The Japanese guy isn't saying anything you probably don't already know or can't find out by googling the band.

Larry was great -- but it was Sly who did all the composing, that is to say -- that he composed Larry's part for him as well as everyone else's part.
Sly spent 4 years studying formal composition - if not for him, Graham wouldn't have become as famous as he did. He was performing Sly's music.

It is "Stand", just a different version that Sly did. The beauty of Sly was that he would modify the songs during live shows.
