  • i wish i understood japanese.

  • @1:06 Drake's Uncle (The great Larry Graham)

  • love the japanese dub. very godzilla. i'm on another planet!

  • for the 5 people they dont know talent if hit smacked them in the face and I am the one growing up in a genereation of bad music.

  • I'm sorry...but Larry Graham looks like Damon Wayans...(2:49) (LOL!)

  • @BirKlett I knew I wasn't the only thinking that, every time I see old footage of Larry Graham, Damon Wayans immediately comes to mind lol

  • Brings back some GREAT memories! I miss them! I still play their songs,& will never get tired of listening.

Saw Sly a few years back in SAN JOSE.Anybody else see him/them? I'd been blogging everywhere as to where is SLY,& out of the blue,he was playing closed by! What a THRILL!

  • why the Japanesse naration?!

  • @anitalenor It's for the japanese people who can't understand english.

  • @anitalenor

    Because Moonkeey-san is japanese :)

  • AT 48 seconds thats Larry Graham ...original Bassist...Stone Fell out with him Big time Gangsters were involved

  • One of the Best documentarys EVER !

  • is there a version where the narrator talks in english, not japanese?

  • Yep, this is part of a series called the history of rock n roll. This is episode 8, the whole thing is worth watching though.

  • @habde Don't worry. The Japanese guy isn't saying anything you probably don't already know or can't find out by googling the band.

  • First guy talking on this is Alan Leeds who worked very closely with Prince from about 82 through the early 90's. I think Alan poured over Prince his experience and insight which may have influenced Prince into some new directions and listen to broader avenues like Miles Davis. Alans brother Eric was Prince's main sax guy, incredible musician, he was big on Miles. All this is so interconnected, its wild. Its FUNK.

  • onyxworld, any ideas who it is that says, "he put together funk, pop, rock, etc ...and "it just crossed all the lines"?

  • @A1yn7bzsu Chief Rocka Frankie Crocker

  • 1:24 I'm gonna add some bottom,

So that the dancers a-just won't hide! I love it!

  • not to mention that shit he dropped w/p-funk!

    SLY a straight up genius.

  • Who is the commentator who says, Sly 'is the Bach of rhythm. The things what goeson in his head..." ?

  • nelson george. he writes on jazz and hip-hop. he's with the village voice, i think.

  • thanks, onyxworld, but I went to his website and doesn'tlook like him. All the gold/platinum records in the backgroung, I think it is a famous vocalist....any other ideas?

  • sorry a1. i got my quotes mixed-up. the fella @ 3:34 is logan westbrooks of cbs records.

  • could be westbrooks, but there isn't a picture of him that looks like the man in the clip (actually, few picutes) Any other ideas?

  • definitely wesbrooks @ 3:34 . name translated from the japanese in the upper left. you'll notice the cbs there in roman characters. search logan westbrooks of cbs records. he was the head of urban music for cbs.

  • I think you are right. I looked at some picutres of him on-line. Sure is a resemblence to one or two of the photos at that web site.

  • awesome video.

  • Larry was great -- but it was Sly who did all the composing, that is to say -- that he composed Larry's part for him as well as everyone else's part.

Sly spent 4 years studying formal composition - if not for him, Graham wouldn't have become as famous as he did. He was performing Sly's music.

  • GotDiggityDamnnnnnn!!

Now That's What You Call "Walkin' & Chewin' BubbleGum ~ That BassLine Iz off Tha Chain

  • all i gotta say is funkin badass....

  • I recognize Cynthia Robinson and Larry Graham and Bootsie, but does anyone know who these other commentators are?

  • Okay,I had a bad experience with Riot,I had it on cassette,it didn't have any lyric sheet or whatever,right...so,I tried to listen to it,and half the time,he sounded like he was drunk or something,I could never make out what he was sayin, and I just got irritated and gave up on it.

  • Larry Graham is the baddest bass player to ever walk the face of this earth! Okay,I'm stretching it bit, but he's the best of the best.

  • I GOT to say it again...If God was a bassist, he'd be Larry Graham

  • were??

  • thank u larry graham lookin good my main mang

hey sly hang in bro, peace out and let it all hang down!

  • Thanks so much for posting this! This is from the "Rock n Roll" series that came on PBS back in 1995 and I've been looking high and low for this! Do you have the rest of this episode? So far I only see parts 3, 5 and 6...is there a 1, 2, and 4 somewhere else?

  • i would really like to see some live sly, pre-theres a riot going on, that's when he started getting bad into coke and the tone changed

  • True - but Riot was a masterpiece. My 17 year old daughter caught right onto it the first time she heard it; loved it. It's timeless music, he was ahead of his time on Riot.

  • I would love to see a video of a live performance of Sly and the Family Stone's "Sex Machine". Does anyone out there have it? I heard it on the Sly's "Stand" album. It's about 14 minutes long. That song is the best instumental that I have ever heard! Fonkay! Incorporates blues, rock, gospel, jazz, everything!

  • what the name is song at 0:35 ??? That was really good !

  • That's Stand!,tho he's taking liberties with the recorded incarnation.

  • What show is that from and is there whole version available on Youtube, couldn't find it..

  • Domo arigato for posting this!! Totally cool!!! THANK YOU!!!! as a musician this is the coolest to watch

  • thats funkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  • wats the song by sly & the family stone at like 30? i thought it was stand but i bougt it on itunes and its not it

  • It is "Stand", just a different version that Sly did. The beauty of Sly was that he would modify the songs during live shows.

  • you know that song around 3:50, "thank you for letting..."...I think Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis sampled that guitar lick for Janet Jackson's "Rythm Nation?"

  • Yes indeed that was sampled for rhythm nation.

  • I KNEW IT!!! I always thought so, cuz it had a VERY distinctive Strat sound, you know, that percussive attack, maybe even a Telecaster...I'm such a music nerd, ha ha... :)

  • Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis had taste.

  • yepyep i think your right.
