I'd probably be easier if you used a standard marlinspike instead of that swedish fid simply because you'd have a narrower tip if you just grinded it a little. Not much difference in splicing on the field and doing it in a shop other than the fun inconvenience of not having any vices or beavers, or at times, more rope available. What's this splice for?
