its not tuned at all. it is a full range bottom end design meaning all the bottom notes are evenly made. it shouldn't have that driver in it though. thats for a tighter ported enclosure. maybe a car sub. the box design is for a pa sub. and yes, it realy needs a crossover. all you bass freaks, just go talk to an audio engineer and stop getting tips from the local car parts specialist. speakers are not cars.

they do make the sub louder. howerver, if they are too big, they wont amplify the sound.

no, that's not right

do large br ports and your subwoofer is able to play lower frequencies, if you make them to large your subwoofer sounds dull.

with bassreflex ports you can set your calibration, that means, if you dont use a port the sub can play higher, thats good for tops with mid/low speakers

and with ports it can play lower frequencies, good for large subwoofers.

If you would give me the tsp's of the driver and the basic dimensions (effective back-chamber volume,Port starting area (cm2) , length of port, and port ending area) of your new design i could validate your project (simulating it thoroughly ,modifying it for best performance)

Since you don't seem to know the tuning frequency of the last enclosure , i assume you build them without calculating them by hand or useing CAD to do the job...

What was the tuning frequency of the box ? I dont think the sub is as weak as the video makes it look. Maybe it has a high tuning and the test track was an infra test song ... this would be like pulling a huge trailer with an ferrari.

The original Arls design by Aw audio was a bassreflex enclosure with a special port which had a wider bandwith then a simple port. it had a high tuning frequency so it will produce a nice kick-bass and high output. if you play music with really low bass over it without a lowcut it will sound weak and the speaker will reach it's excursion limit very quick . it is a pa-subwoofer and no home cinema sub...

and i assume this box has at least partly simelar parameters.

The woofer looks like it is running on a "Baffle" mode. The wood needs to be at least 15mm MDF (Medium Density Fibre). The port is too much for the woofer.

If the wood is too thin then you'll probably hearing cabinet resonances along with the bass.
