We've been doing this in the States for years.

Super markets pull food off the shelves BEFORE the expiration dates, because it's unsellable one the food gets close to the date.

Ex; Nobody will buy milk with an expiration date of 48 hrs from purchase.

Nothing wrong with the milk, just not worth paying for.
