Yes Mr. SkateGriggs, thanks so much for the clarification. You are obviously of student of life. And you're clearly correct, there ARE two pebbles... I was using "Pebble" in its plurative form (ie, similar to "Man" meaning "Mankind" rather than just one singular person).
Also, your keen observation of the pebbles not committing to the line is significant and telling. I think it truly shows the extent to which we are all balancing that tight rope between life and death, and some choose to embrace humanity in the midst of danger while others shy away and pursue a more cautious existence. Regardless, we are all on the white line.
