This is awesome dude. I'm actually doing an english assignment on this song--In my opinion the funny/sad aspect is based on how people try and pretend everything's alright after a break-up/divorce (the happy upbeat sound) while deeper down you can tell it's left its scars (the sorrow behind the lyrics).
@vinoberg Thanks - I think there are so many ways you can interpret TMBG songs, which is part of the joy. Personally I don't think this song is actually so upbeat! The middle 8 always reminds me of The Smiths for some reason. But most people think the melody is at odss with the lyrics. Remember the song is in the 3rd person - that is the singer is not actually the one breaking up. Even though everybody knows Linnell wrote it about his parents, there is still a detachment from the melancholy. ;-)
I play completely by ear, sorry. The TMBG wiki is quite good for chords if you can improvise around chord structures. They don't always sound correct to me though.
Nyah! You're both wrong it was 1988, towards the end of the year, then they signed with Elektra at the start of 1989. GREAT piano version though, niiiiiice one.
One of my all-time favorite TMBG songs. Its absolute brilliance grows more resonant the older I get.
