This is my least favorite performance, not because it was not good but because it lacks that afro-blue touch!!!! They took away their jazz style and the song is super plain compared to their earlier renditions of songs!!
I LOVE afro blue sooo much. I love how into the song Christie is the whole time, and even a few seconds after she finishes. Then she smirks, and her face just shows the pure joy she felt.
If you honestly think that this group isn't AMAZINGLY talented.....KILL YOURSELF NOW, and stopping standing in the way of true music. Technically, vocally, arrangement-wise, emotively, harmoniously, and appearance-wise....THEY WERE THE BEST GROUP. Period. If you can't agree with that you must be deaf, dumb, and blind, so again...Kill yourself and stop hating.
@Deerych ummm.... insisting for ppl to kill themselves is kinda the equivilant of murder just cuz some ppl have a different taste in music doesnt mean there wrong merely they have a different opinion then yew how bout calm down and enjoy wat u like and leave others alone.... the whole kill yourself bit s a bit uncalled for
@ChalkyNathan I think they are great and he doesnt hold them back this is like the first time he got attention and he did amazing so i don't know what your talking about
Feel like they rely on Kristi too much. They have other fabulously talented soloists, but she ends up singing all of their songs. I really didn't like their male soloist. He looked like he was hopped up on caffeine the entire time and his voice isn't that great at all. Eh. Too depressing of a song for them, I think. I was very disappointed when the lost to the Aires, because while the Aires simply perform carbon copies of songs, Afro Blue makes each and every song their own. Rant over.
@hebrewhammershabbat This group doesn't have all-around appeal. In other words, if you don't like their genre, there's no way you could like anything that they produce. But that said, objectively, they're a solid group. The lead has a charismatic tone to her voice that makes it special, and the back-up vocalists don't screw up the harmonies.
well u really suck if u think they r lame and i guess the don't sound good to you cuz there is something wrong with your brain, ears, life, or all of the above
@specsishere. ACAPELLA is "niche market" lol . There arent exactly any acapella grouos in the top 40 right now. Honestly afro blue is the MOST marketable because all of them are great singers. There presentations sound like songs on the radio, not off broadway plays ( shout out to pntnix)
If they wouldnt have said they were a jazz band people wouldnt have known it. If ben folds, he seems to have an insecurtiy complex with the jazz music genre, wouldnt keep dropping innuendos that jazz is a "elite"thing you wouldnt have cared. Listen with your ears. You know they are good.
Just an FYI, last season Committed caught flack for not "rockin' out". Everyone has had there ups and downs on this show. AB has a level of talent that's just unfreakin believable! Go Blue!
afro blue is still the best out of all the rest. so what if their rock song wasn't "rockin" enough for them. They can do things the other groups wish they could do, and I bet if you ask the other groups which group is the biggest threat in the competition, they they will say AFRO BLUE! Jazz is one of the best genres for singing and instrumentals!
Although Afro-Blue is not one of my favorite groups, I can understand why they have a strong fanbase. THIS was my favorite performance by them, probably because they kept it simple and didn't over-jazz the song. Great job!
@aOKlady I'm sick of all these people dissing jazz. The one true American art form, and the "American" public gets irritated whenever a group throws in a few jazz-based chords. Why is "over-jazzing" a negative thing?
@hebrewhammershabbat ...More power to you, if you like the jazz genre; I don't. Do you like opera? How about Country & Western, Hank Williams style?...That's certainly an American style. Can you rock with Bach? Do you prefer Pop ...Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga? Are you a metal head? Do you dig crooning with the Rat Pack? How about a little Boston Pops, Trans-Siberian, or is Glenn Miller more your style? Do you like Folk, Bluegrass, Beatlemania, Psychedelic, R&B, Motown, Blues...? To each his own.
@hebrewhammershabbat Over-anything isn't good. over-cooking? Sometimes you lose the original flavors. See Janet Medley.
No one is dissing jazz. But this and Killin Me Softly was really the only example of AB stepping outside of their shell with any conviction. Afro Blue's biggest problem is saying "We're not X, we're jazz," and refusing to try and do anything else. This time, they bought in and it was awesome, but despite their technical mastery, there was no heart in "American Girl."
@SifuSoda this happend to last season's "groove for thought". They came into the show stating "they are jazz and nothing else". That's why Groove for thought didn't get as far as they should have. This is probably what happend to AB. they are still really good.
Wow, I could really hear the longing in their voices and see it in their faces. I think their performance was even more emotional than the original. The original is like, "I'm having trouble sleeping; can you come over?" and this version is like, "I miss you so badly that I have insomnia."
I'm a huge AB fan but must say I wasn't feeling the rock song. There were so many other artists they could hv done but that's not the point. The point is I was hoping they wld do a country song by LA and they did and nailed it! This was poetic. Absolutely beautiful. I can listen to Christy all day, every day. This is a brilliant group and sometimes non-brilliant ppl get lost in translation. Glad to see they are still in the competition b/c they deserve it. Awesome job guys!
It will be a shame if they don't win this competition. Ben Folds is making people think they suck because he criticizes on stuff that only person w/ a music doctorate would pick up on. The fact that they were in the bottom 2 after this performance is flat out retarded. They should win, but if Pentatonix wins....I'm cool with that.
@raymondjackso25 it's a music competition, dude. these people are competing for an ultimate shot, especially for an acapella group. for this type of music, it's a niche market at best. so of course ben folds is going to criticize stuff that he should, because people are funneling money into this show, the contract, and the genre. and afro-blue is third place at best. vocal point and pentatonix are miles ahead.
@specsishere the only thing Vocal Point has going for them is that they don't have pitch problems. Otherwise they are a bland group that blends in with Aires/Jackets. Pentatonix is not miles ahead of Afro-Blue. Like I said, If Pentatonix wins I won't be upset because they've had a couple perfect performance and a couple that were trash. Afro-Blue has been consistently at like an 8 on a scale of 1-10. Vocal Point had a great 60's performance but some of their other one's were forgettable.
vocal point is miles behind afro blue pentatonix is good but i wouldnt say they r miles ahead afro blue is awesome at what they do they should have at least gotten to the top 2
@raymondjackso25 Oh whatever, a doctorate isn't needed to know half of what he says. It is actually fairly basic, it's hardly his fault that the majority of Americans don't know any music terminology.
Just one more thought. Watching Christy sing is one of the most joyous and profound things that I have seen on network television in quite sometime. She has a unique gift that is deep, humble, and compelling.
This song was one of the greatest moments in Sing Off history thus far. After the disasterous "American Girl" performance earlier in the night (perhaps the most panned performance of the season by any group), Afro Blue had to pull off one of the best performances of the season to have a shot at staying in the show. AND THEY DID. Even with this song, they were still in the bottom two, which shows how dire their circumstances were. So very proud of this group!
how nice to see a group just take the genre and run with it. jazz is so far from country but they did it justice without changing it so much to fit what they do, shows that they do have versatility. There is an honesty to country music that they latched on to and showed very well.
single handedly saved themselves with this song. there was soooo much emotion.
i couldn't help but laugh at 3:48 because right after Ben said that they had no Jazz night it almost looked like the dude was crying "yeah... we don't have jazz night =[ =[ =["
They will either finish second or third in my opinion..Its going to be hard for the to knock off vocal point and almost impossible to catch pentatonix at this point ..IMO they are far superior technically to any group but, lack the appeal with their style. Both of the other groups I mentions have been consistant crowd pleasers.
This is how I see it finishing 1. Pentatonix 2. AfroBlue 3. Vocal Point 4. Dartmouth Aires 5. Urban method
You can really see the passion in their faces when they sing!
