Rachel goes to Ross' apartment and tells him that he was wrong for thinking that saying goodbye to him didn't matter. She explained that he (Ross) meant MORE to her than any of the other friends. And because he meant more to her, it made it a lot sadder/harder for her to say goodbye to him. At first, I thought the same as you did, but after what Rachel said, it made a lot more sense.
