mind you, you are forgetting a very important fact. Most underground bands go under the radar, sliding down below the eyes. Many don't dig as deep, and so many people I know have never even gotten their heads out of Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Priest, Maiden, and Sabbath's asses. Besides, now adays, it's like the newer generation's turning our empire into a fad (i.e. metalcore, deathcore, und shit like slipknot) and not even putting effort into it and grab what's easy.
