The southern U.S. used to be predominately made up of Democrats,

yet after Lincoln was assassinated they had to swear to northern allegence. BTW Lincoln wasn't even on the southern ballots in either term of his elections.Yet, after the south was forced to pledge to Northern cause in order to be admitted back into the union...naturally pledged to the party of Lincoln, which was the first official republican.
