Posted on my birthday as well. Cool. Nice work...simple brilliance. I will mourn the day when some big ad firm uses this idea in a TV commercial but with much less heart and humility.
what a simple yet beautiful film!!! i love it! good job, banion5!! :) thanks for sharing this video with me!!! it's now one of my favs! :) can't wait for more!!
very beautiful, thank you for sharing this short film...i'm a paper and pen/pencil person, so i'm all for that!kudos! the music goes great and compliments the gestures and feelings. eventhough i couldn't see some of the things written by her, i felt the emotions or thoughts portrayed.i love the idea that people can communicate without talking, seems more sincere and genuine. thanks again! cheers! :)
Thank you so much! And, I really appreciate you stopping by to share your thoughts. I think Harold had a pretty good point, and it falls in line with mine, simply that it doesn't really matter what she says, it's simply that she's saying something.
I like the theme as well, cutting away from our dependency on communication devices and returning to good old paper. It not only brings out a sense of nostalgia, it also gives us a chance to read and imagine what characters are feeling.
In a nutshell, the film is an easy-to-watch, simply understood and message riddled one. An excellent job, considering it was filmed on your journey to Mt. Fjui.
Hi banion5, read your message and watched the video, here are my comments.
An interesting montage of many different angels I have to say. Not only does it tell the story in an unconventional way, the lack of verbal interaction between the characters is nicely complimented with a light-hearted music in the background.
Really nice creative ideas, my only objections concerne the editing and the cinematography, all the time i was watching it i felt that becuase of the music you choose the cuts could start being faster and more diverse as to keep my attention and to underline the important moments of the story, i liked the fact that the tempo of the music changes exactly when they are in that small tunnel that's great with the yellow lights.
the camera shots were very creative but it was hard sometimes to read the pencil. the message was short and beautiful and perfect the way it had no dialouge. for reaperofsquirrels, the music fit very well for me. the girls almost haunted nature, the silent longing...the social pressures of staying silent were all communicated in the music. very nicely done...but perfect the quailty...
music is different for each person. i didnt feel it fit. i like slower music. i feel it conveys more emotion and that the more singular notes hold much more power than a high pitched bass line. the music in a movie in my oppinion is what holds it together and gives it power that movies have. it is a great idea. its not a bad short. not by any means. good luck
i agree with this paragraph in that- music holds it together. i think music holds everything together. i agree. except- i think the music in this short is PERFECTION. absolutely BEAUTIFUL. it reminds me of the score of one of my favorite movies: Japanese Story.... or something you'd find in a Miranda July movie. totally minimal... but somehow, it pulls such emotion, it's almost too real...hurts too much. i love this film. i've been that girl. i AM that girl. <3
that had nothing in common with 10 minutes. ten minutes was one take. meaning it wasnt cut. you had a fairly decent starter short for a portfolio. the music had much to be desired it was to sharp and was too repetitive. it was in c i think which is a sound of desperation and wailing. there was too much trying to tell too little. keep it up. film is a hard buisness to dable in.
Lovely short. Thank you for bringing my attention to it. Although in retrospect it may seem like a simple idea, it was also a powerful one. The major downfall unfortunately was the length. This story could be told much more effectively at the 2 minute region. Can't wait to see more. Well done :)
Yeah, it would have been nice if the cards had shown up better, but, fortunately, they aren't the point, so I'm glad you enjoyed it and pulled from it anyway. Thank you for stopping by!
Loved the music, loved the message, takes us straight back to the basics of human comunication. I really, really liked it. Thanks for sharing with me, I will pass it along.

I think that the context of the story is awesome!!!!
Only "critique" I have is lighting...you couldnt read all the notes because of how the sun was reflecting...other than that...AWESOME JOB DUDE ;)

hey Dan,
while watchin it,I cud nt help smiling, feelin a slight pain in my heart, and lookin out of window with someone on my mind
you know...we are not the same with pens, you open your heart and let it go
but this "modern" age made us such freaks of nature that our tongues are locked up for a whole life
yet,thanks God,we still have hands...
hopefully the someone I have mentioned about will hear me one day,not through my hand, but thru the sound of my voice
peace...

you catch me, man!
i really had the same thought as she does.
was it improvised?
back to the basic, pen and paper! i like it.
firelabel 4 years ago
Right on! Yeah, it was basically as improvised as it could be. We pieced it together in about half of an 8 hour bus ride.
