I imagine they were so falling over themselves at the fact they got Madge on the show, that they let her do what the hell she wanted!!!

It just about never happened before 1991, then a no miming rule came in in 1991, and they stuck to that until about the time of this performance where the odd artist could mime if they wanted. By the end of the 90s, it was about 50/50 so I imagine a lot of it was down to personal choice. I suspect Madge opted to mime a vocally challenging song like this - she knows her limitations.
