In my opinion, this breed would look quite a bit better if it had its tail docked to the second joint and its ears cropped to resemble a Dobermann's medium crop. Then again, if their used as working dogs, the ears should stay natural in order for them to help channel scent to the nose.
loves the water?! the weimaraner i grew up with absolutely loathed and almost feared water, from rain and pools to sprinkling it on her with your fingers!
I have a 4.5 yr old Weim (Kim) who is the most placid, friendly dog you could ever wish to meet - She loves kids, and is friend to every dog in the local park.
A year or so ago, we bred from her (to a great quality weim) and Kept one of the male pups (Bentos). His character is completely different from his mother's in a great many respects. In the home, he is even more affectionate than Kim, obedient to the letter and is no trouble at all, but he is incredibly aggressive with all other dogs.
grew up with a weimaraner. he was the best dog ever. when he died, my mom got another one. terrible personality. didn't compare at all. so i guess it all depends on the individual
first bred to persue wild cats? WRONG. And they could have mentioned that most of them go crazy, because nobody can keep up with their exercise demands and that is sadly also why most of them end up in rescues.
@danifloh this an American show and the first reason they where breed in America was to hunt wild cats. they should have explained there original history in Germany, but other then that this explains the breed rather well, and your points are dead on! as well. I am rehabilitating a young Weim right now who has hash fearful aggression, due to going to a family with 3 young boys who had never had a dog before.
not all dogs are so active, my Weimaraner was really lazy and i got him when i was 9ish and my sister 5ish. He ADORED kids AND he only ever barked at ONE person. other than that he loved everyone!! XD
my uncle has always owned labs and german shepherds, but his son left him with a weirmaranar. compared to most labs they are larger, lankier, much more energetic, and not as smart. great dog, though
@tedbratton Not smart? If my dogs were physically equipped they would talk and sing... They count and know and follow too many commands to list! I could place a nice juicy steak within their reach they will not touch it till i tell them they may. I have been around many breads and Weimaraners are by far one of the most intelligent breeds in existence. They are strong willed, so not just anyone can own a weimaraner. Training is a must, with any dog for that matter
@jlcastor74 No where does this say Weims are "Not smart" in fact they they mention how smart they are several times , they are so smart you need to know how to train them after all they are known as( grey ghost- and the dog with the human brain).
I am rehabilating a Weim due to all mentioned here. My GSP bitch and GWP have taken him under there wing and after 3 months he is doing well ,but if damaged these dos are one of the hardest to rehabilitate because of there high intelligence
mine is 7 years old and his name is lothar, and, im also very happy that he has his whole tail. hes 7 but man, he runs so fast! i guess that when he was 3, he could run 60 km/h! haha hes soo calm and so amazing personality!
Good Grief! AnimalPlanet should correct this video. Weims were NOT originally bred to hunt big cats ! They were bred to hunt big game such as bear, boar, elk & deer. They have some pointer & retriever instincts that can be honed with training and they have great tracking ability.
MOST Weims are easily trained because they want to please their owners. But you cannot be a pushover. You must be boss, be consistent and use positive reinforcement. They won't respond well to abuse.
Yes, there are blue Weims and they are just as good as the grey/silver Weims. However, blue is considered a disqualifying fault by the AKC. You can get AKC obedience and hunting titles for a blue Weim but you cannot show them at the beauty pageant dog shows.
Yaayyy you. I tryed to talk my mum into letting us get one but no go. I did work with 2 or 3 Weimaraners at a boarding kennel though. They were 3 amasing dogs.
I grew up with this breed and all I can say is they are wonderful canine companions. Protective, loving and loyal. Skye and Dawn are now in heaven but I remember them fondly & will never forget them. I also disagree with the training comments I had no trouble and I was a child! Guarding is a wonderful ability and they protected us more than once from both humans and other dogs! The breeding has more to do with temperament and trainability!
@CounterCanter888 I grew up with a German Shorthaired Pointer and she was the best dog ever, Now I think a Weirmaramer would fill in quite well. Both are crazy as hell until trained. I love the temperment and look of this dog. If I can't find another GSP, a Weirs could be it.
I have a weiamaraner and he is very smart and willing to do anything. The 1 treat for training is a bunch of bologna. Weiamaraners are very intelligent and are very easy to train
How annoying you must be as you correct everyone that doesn't say it like a German does. Do you correct hispanic people when they SHair instead of CHair?
If you're going to own a German dog such as the Weimaraner at least know how to say it's name the way it's meant to be said!
Even worse is that the guy giving advice about the breed doesn't even know the correct pronunciation, I'm sure he can get his tongue around wei, even if other nationalities were unable to do so because of their accents!
PS: I don't know any Hispanic people so can't comment on them :)
I don't agree with only 1 bone for trainability. All the dog books I own rate the breed high in intelligence and a desire to please their owners. Beautiful dogs, very aristocratic looking. I like their grey coats and haunting eyes.
What do they mean the Weimaraner isn't good at training? From what I know and have seen the are great with commands and don't take long to train. You have to use REAL decoupling on the Dog (unlike some of those shows on TV) but they are hardly difficult to train.
My Weim Mischa was poisoned by my stupid neighbors. She passed away... I miss her so much she was so dang smart too. She could open the patio gate lol.... and she did all the time to get to the back door
have you had dogs before?weimaraners are really good dogs. i have had three and they are REALLY hyper as puppies. i had to get rid of one because my parents didnt give her a chance because she ripped my dads bumper off his car :o and she ripped up rugs. all of them were hyper until about 3 and they calm down. the one i have now is REALLY shy she is scared of lots of things. :D but they are great dogs they really love people.
I dont agree with one treat for trainability, i've had 2. I have a little 9 week old blue now, and he is already sitting, staying, and laying down on command with little effort. Best dogs i've ever owned.
You start obedience training this pup around 9 or 10 weeks old, and keep it up until it's 2 years old (out of its "adolescence") and I swear there is no better dog. Trainability? They learn extremely quickly. That's not the problem. It's just that they have the attitude: "What's in it for me?" and that's what you work through.
They're great with kids and cats if raised with them from puppy hood. A bit overly protective, but their bark is by far worse than their bite. Mine has never bitten.
@mundymanor My Weimaraner has one hell of a bark , he used to wake up me at night whenever his bed was disorganized or if something was not in its place.
@manufran02 -- My dog has never barked because of his bed, but he likes everything in its place and will pester you until you fix it. Weims' barks can compete with the fiercest German Shepherd's... but it's just noise. Mine walks a huge circle around any new object in the house, and will often bark at it (like the Christmas tree). Hysterical. He warms up to new people lots faster than that tree.
they are hard 2 train. they don;t listen. When you said about them being good watch dogs, i looked at my weimaraner who is cuddled up all nnice and cozy on the couch. lol :p
They're not that hard to train. Like all dogs, you need dedication, discipline, and repetition. My weimaraner dog is nice and trained she listens to me no matter what.
when u get that nose tickling, they do just about anything lol
i got mine at 3yrs adopted, she was not socialized, overweight and had a slew of bad habits but within a month she was obedient and within 4 she lost the extra 20lbs she had!
shes a big female 25.5inches at the shoulder and 70lbs
