How I wish Don would include this song in all his concerts, along with AP, Vincent, And I Love You So, Empty Chairs, Crossroads, Til Tomorrow, Winter Has Me, The Grave, Oh My What a Shame, Narcissisma, Everybody Loves Me Baby, etc. These are all my favorites.
I had this Don McLean cd when I was younger that I would listen to over and over and over again, and it had this version of the song Castles in the Air, not that slower drum heavy version I keep finding. Anyone have a better clip of this banjo version? I like it much much better!
@Aliendear Agreed. I'm not sure who his audience is, perhaps a high school audience? whoever they are, there is a sense of calm and quiet reassurance of the future. I don't see that in our current generation. Even in their youth they seem to know the ship is sinking...
wow, being from that generation i will attest there is virtue in simplicity, and that more isn't always what it seems.. these were lighter times where many musicians were expressing the hope that people had and were feeling then. great social messages were being played on the radio everyday all day long, -to the children listening. Music from them thank god is still impregnated in the time thread of history, and available to future generations
I enjoy watching this video and seeing Don's lighthearted side, but his young audience makes me feel sad that young people of that age today no longer seem as innocent, natural and uncomplicated as they did.
I just love this fast version. He sounds so young, carefree and as if he can't wait to move on. I don't like the slow version which they call the original. I think this one is the original.
@nerdflanders8710 - The original version of "Castles in the Air," which was recorded in 1969, featured strings and was released in 1970. In 1971, United Artists Records re-released the song, but overdubbed a Moog Synthesizer part. The third version was an entirely new recording released, I think, in 1981. It's at a much slower tempo. The version heard here is either the 1970 or '71 release. This up-tempo version is hard to find on You Tube.
oh i just got that joke, he said, "now a song about shoes" then said, well its one for the money... at first i didnt get it then i remembered he was refering to Elvis Preselys song blue suaid shoes. ahhh
Thats where dvd cut off. Song about shoes...there is a song called 'Fashion Victim' which I will upload tonight. Dunno if one and the same tho........
@vbvbvb088 He started to sing Blue Suede Shoes. I hope you can upload the video of him singing that there. Thanks a lot for uploading this one. It's great to see this side of the serious songwriter
@homelessbrother - The song about shoes is "Blue Suede Shoes." But he was kidding - and probably a tad stoned - talking to the audience about generational fashion etc. Love this rare footage. EP would've done great cover on "Castles in the Air". Great upload.
need to slow down a bit

Notice how much calmer everyone was in the 1970s. There was a lot of intelligence then.

@emofolkie You are correct. This is the original. It's from his first album, Tapestry (1970).

@vbvbvb088 That's too bad. Hopefully someone else will upload it or better yet a live performance by Don from the early 70s.
