@pacemiester combustion engines are basically air pumps, when pistons retreat to bdc they pull in absolute air, with longtubes, this increases because of better ventilation

When the exhaust cycle is over and and the intake charge is about to come in the valves overlap the exhaust the piston pushes up and pushs the air out sucking in the intake when it goes back down  creating the vacum and sucks in the intake charge and some of the intake charge goes out hences running rich and lean..

That knocking could be due to so many things. Back pressure isn't needed in any modern day vehicle, and hasn't been needed for quite some time. Back pressure kills your valves, so he's not harming anything at all...

Could be a lot of things to make a tick like that really. Exhaust leak around the new header gaskets (bolts not re-torqued enough), collapsing lifter from free revving it too much (kids? ehm) or a lifter not getting enough oil if he hadn't let it warm up before the "showing off his open header car", or could be a rod or main bearing going out (trust me it can get loud). I'm sure he would have found out by now hahaha.

Gotta agree with you there, I love it when you start getting chirping like theres a bird trapped inside your motor... oil pump going out usually with that sound, but the lifter idea is probably your best bet for his ticking, but could have been not from free rev but from a kid not taking care of his car i.e. basic engine maintenance...

i did the same exact thing with my camaro. i was reving it and showin off what a real car should sound like and when i finished the engine had a knock so i took it to a local mechanic i knew and he used a scope or something and told me it was a rod... now i have an excuse to dump that engine and get a 383!

Ford sucks, but Mustangs are quality cars. You see them everywhere because they work. You see more of them than these. If I recall, most old school Camaros and Trans Ams are rusting away.
