I actually agree with the Standard poodle! they are HIGHLY intelligent and it shows! they thrive when given a job to do, the are actually water retrivers like Labs are. the one I couldn't beleive was the papion!

Acording to my sences this young lad is telling the truth!Border Collies are the smartest.But I have to disagree,german shephards are smarter than the standard poodle.I know,check my bookshelf!All dogs!If any questions ask me,I will answer to anything,espacially dogs!DOGZ!

What about Siberian Huskies??? Sibs are so intelligent that they talk back :-P my Siberian Husky is constantly arguing with us lol. And she knows many commands and tricks and learns fast and never forgets. She learned how to open the latches on her kennel by watching us and can open doors. She also knows how to push the button on the freezer to make the ice come out. And she knows up to pull a dog sled. Check out my page to see videos of my awesome husky!

I read several times that Shelties were 4th. But really, the smartest dog I know is a English Mastiff named Tank.

Sleeps 20 hours a day, eats three meals a day, and what does he have to do to get all off this? Nothing.

No demands placed on him, no expectations, no job or work, no stress or danger.

That dog is a genius.

I did have a lab/ pyereness mixed but more pyereness, very smart and easy to train by 4 months old be was house broke and crate trained. He would open his cage and he would UN zipped my purse! He was an awesome watch dog ! I miss him... rite now I have a Labrador named Chloe, she's my miracle from God !! She's a strong and a fighter dat didn't give up on life ! I love Labradors and German shaperd! And pyereness and English shaperds!!

you may consider looking at the cocker spaniel and 'cavalier king charles' which are mid-size pointer, retreiver, swimmer, house keeper, kid friendly and also fantastic to look at. Really intelligent dog. :) My dad had a trained cocker spaniel who could recognize color keys , count, swim under water and many other talents, plus all the normal training. He could hunt without me dad shooting guns :) Bringing back ducks and all..... impressive dog. but cool video thanx for posting

The German Shepherd the 3'rd most inteligent ?!?! I must make a specification if this is true. The gap between the Poodle and the German Shepherd is big you dont need to train the Poodle at all he just understands 80+ % of everything you say. German Shepherds on the other hand well they are clumsy and stupid if you dont train them. ( personal experience )

@IronNation0 @IronNation0 maybe you shouldve trained it then...they love having tasks. you have to understand how to train them. theyre not toy dogs like a poodle who, like retrievers and other breeds, were bred to be domestic dogs and easily trained. shepherds were bread to accomplish goals and guard things, so they need something to keep them busy. as for clumsy, i doubt cops wud use a "clumsy" or stupid dog in their canine units. u mustve got a poorly bred one, or more likely, it was you

Well I didn´t find the rottweilers less intelligent than the dobermans when we were training. I think there are also differences in intelligence in every breed, the more time you spend and the more you teach your dog the more intelligent he is going to be. Humans are like that to, if you don´t educate people then their true potential will never come out.

@TheCetoba I agree with you the doberman is nr 5 and there is no difference in their intelligence, we had 4 doberman to protect our property and we trained them at the doberman club and we also had a few rottweiler there and they do compare. For me the rottweiler is a stronger version of a doberman, the only advantage the doberman has is that he is a tick faster.

@ger1ist The Doberman is alot more intelligent than the rottie they're also considerably easier to train than the rottie is too and are also a hell of alot more agile than the rottie, but the GSD is still king as far as intelligence is concerned and trainability only challenged by the Border Collie , Welsh Sheepdog .
