  • All these video's are lame, most of them don't clearly explain which way to turn the rod.

  • You didn't explain essential things like which way to turn if I want the strings closer to the fretboard, vice versa. Otherwise a good video

  • Interesting video, Although i'd warn anyone watching it that you should look down the length of the neck to see if it is straight, and not solely base it off of the action (like he said it can be high or low because of your bridge, frets, nut, etc). That and when you adjust the neck you should detune your strings because the tension from the strings puts a lot more pressure on the rod when you adjust it. Other than that it was a good video.

  • @LordRavenX8 Most people will say that the strings should be in proper pitch, for accurate intonation and truss rod adjustment. Because if you adjust the rod when the strings are slack, it could change when you tune them back up, due to the added tension.

  • great video thanks.

  • hi, my guitar is an electro-acustic one. it doesnt thave the thing you mentioned and showed. i just bought it yesterday and it sounds awful with the capo on. well, just one string. but it drives me nuts!

  • Don't fear the trussrod.

  • So this deals with intonation and what?

What kind of screw do I need. My guitar seems a bit out of setup as it was shipped from new jersey.(I live way bottom of tx) I just wanna see if i can do slight adjustment before taking it to professional. What does the truss rod mainly affect?

  • If you were to adjust the truss rod on an acoustic guitar when you don't have a cover on the headstock, would you do it inside the sound hole?

  • @Quakelord1991 yes

  • @Quakelord1991 Yes, that's the only place on many acoustics

  • @Quakelord1991 Yes, that's the only place on many acoustics

  • Why do people say "a quarter turn" when they turn just a little bit? Isn't a quarter turn a 90º turn?

  • @Descalabro No, a quarter turn means a 25% turn.

  • @vongelb 25% of what?

  • @Descalabro Of 360º. LOL. If you look at it, it is in fact more or less a 90º turn.

  • @vongelb I had asked "Isn't a quarter turn a 90º turn?" and you replied "No, a quarter turn means a 25% turn.", Then you say it is 25% of 360º... Besides, only if you consider the minimum and maximum angles he reaches in this video you can call it a 90º turn, and it is not the case because he starts with his wrench almost straight and goes up and down with it, so he's never doing an actual 90º turn; not even close when he speaks about the angle at least...

  • @Descalabro

    Full turn = 360°

    Half Turn = 180°

    Quarter Turn = Priceless!°

  • @dangraphic You missed out half quarter turns they are the WIN.. (45 degree) Better for accuracy.. less stress on the neck.

  • I have been playing in alot of dropped tunings (loss of tension) so I will probably do a truss rod adjustment. Been getting buzzing if I play drop d or lower (3rd fret).

  • Hi, im a guitar newbie, i have been playing with my guitar for barely a week, but i realised my guitar string are really difficult to press down, if i dont press it down hard enough, it produces a buzzing sound. So i checked if the neck was bowed, however it wasnt at all. playing my guitar really hurt my fingertips, can anyone help me with my problem?

  • @ImJustKiddingDude

After a while you will get calluses on the finger tips and it wont bother you anymore. Keep going it will be alright.

  • @MrZeke911 Oh ok, really appreciate your reply :) Ive noticed my fingertips getting immune to the pain, and my fingers have a little more strength already, i'll just keep going until the pain is gone :)

  • @ImJustKiddingDude Try lowering your action and use extra light strings......if your strings are to high you have to push harder and it will hurt your fingers more. Extra light our custom light strings are easier on the fingers.

  • @liquidbend hi, thanks for the reply, however, my acoustic guitar is a cheap 2nd hand one which cost me only about US$45, so i wont wish to send it for a luthier to lower the action. It there anyway i can lower it myself? Again, its an acoustic, not electric.

  • @ImJustKiddingDude Take out the saddle and sand the bottom. If it needs to go back up just put a little shim underneath, paper or something

  • How do u know when you're at an ideal setting when dealing with truss rod adjustments? I just bought a brand new Esp Ltd MH 1000 and i tuned it to B standard. After i tuned it i kept seeing comments about having to adjust the truss rod so the neck doesn't warp and ever since then i've been paranoid about it.

  • does adjusting your trust rod make your guitar sustain longer

  • @wipers86 only in the sense that a correctly set up guitar allows for the longest possible sustain. You really want to adjust everything from the truss rod to the bridge height and even the pickup height to achieve correct intonation and maximum sustain. :)

  • @ToolFan68 thnx for the the info m8 I'm happy that some one got back to me on that

  • @wipers86 Theoretically, yes. But I am not sure if that is what happens in reality.

  • don't just go right in there and do this. find a proper guide. there is a set measurement to adjust to which is usually the best for all guitars. set the bridge saddles however you like, but never use the truss rod to change string height; only use it to adjust neck bow, which is usually a set value.

it drifts off due to natural changes in wood-temp, humidity- changing string guage or changing tuning can move it too.. that's the onyl reason to adjust it.

  • what kinda tuners are thos

  • @admiral8toes only tuners worth buying are schaller and grover, dont worry aobut the rest.

  • @rocafella142 yeah i like yours they look cool i have locking ones

  • just tel me if the strings are away u rotate the wrench clockwise or anti

  • Where can you buy an Allen Wrench? At the pharmacy .... Of course..... Dahhhhhh

  • sweeeeeeeeeeet PRS

  • is the neck ment to be straight?

  • @polishskaterdude32 It's meant to have a little bit of bow (like a valley) so that the strings have enough room to vibrate.

  • The rod truss wrench, it's a 5/16?

  • thanks helpfull video! i was always afraid to adjust it myself

  • WTF??!?!? what if i dont have that tool to adjust the truss rod... where can i get it?

  • Hi dude, I need help, I have Ibenez grg electric guitar, my gutar makes some weird, vibrational kinda sounds around 12th fret, 1st and 2nd strings at full gain, u think truss rod has got anything to do with it? how can I eliminate that noise?

  • Is it ok to turn it back and forth like that?

  • what does the truss rod do

  • if you break a truss rod, could you repare it?

  • @highcoffclife12 No, u need to buy a new neck- or, if it's a set neck, a new guitar. That, or take it to a luthier to get it replaced.

  • What if: you Loosen it Counter clockwise .....and the Rod becomes very loose. And yet the neck still needs to bow Forward a slight bit more???? My rod is Finger loose yet i still have a slight bit more bow I need to gain, should I press the neck forward manually gently maybe to help?? if anyone could plase tell me how to fix this. I dont need much forward bow, just a little, yet trhe rod has became loose cuz i loosened it yesterday.

  • Is this a single-action compression rod or a double action you're adjusting? Also, why didn't you explain how to adjust the rod properly?

This sure is "a little bit" about understanding the truss rod.... enough to be dangerous!!!

  • i've a question for you, i i wish you could answer, i see the your strings are kind'a close to the frets, on my guitar to, but when i play a but hard, more less normally, when the strings vibrate i listen to them touching the frets and making a bad noise, i think i don't listen to it when it is amplified, but what should i do? i bought it a couple weeks ago, and i think it had never been adjusted, any healp?

  • @dropeify adjust your truss rod obviously, lol. you got too low action that u get fret buzz

  • @FrozenSparky nooo, on the factory they don't care about cheap guitars, so they don't LEVEL the FRETS, that's why most people get fret buzz when the try to get low action, and not too much low action, so they put the neck on a 'high' action, so when u buy it u don't see the fret buzz, but when u adjust it, you see that the fret leveling is AWFUL

  • @dropeify agree.... fucking hate that... and the so called "Cheap" guitars arent so cheap for a guy with just one mother that works her ass off... i gave 300$ for my guitar and it has fret buzz

  • @FrozenSparky me too, i gave arround 330$ ...

  • @dropeify im fucking pissed.... the guitar is expensive enough so they can level the frets. its good u can always find a good lutier who can fix it

  • @FrozenSparky u dont know how much i agree with you man... i got a shitty harley benton... i fucking hate thoman,a luthier told me he d repair it for 100 euros, but thats 70% of the price i paid to buy the whole damn guitar... ( I know it's way too cheap and they rly fucked me) when it got here the bridge was high so everything was cool, as soon as i lowered the bridge... HELL UNLEASHED!!!!!! god dammit... :( i hate the buzz and the inconvinient gap

  • Oh, so THAT'S what that thing does on my guitar. The salesman in the store looked at me cautiously and said, "just leave that alone."

  • i gave your mom a fretjob

  • Ok I recently bought a cheap bass and after fooling around with it I couldn't improve the buzzy sound. I look at the neck of my guitar and it has an arc so that the strings are pressed up against the frets( 2:20 ). I've tightened my truss rod as far as it will go and it stays in the same position, any help PLZ????

  • @ItsMeLegit

when the strings are too close to your neck, you need to release the truss rod, so turn counterclockwise

  • Thanks dude. Subbed.

  • Hey whats up? I just bought a PRS Custom 24 today actually ;). I bought it used and I am totally OCD. How can one tell if someone did any sort of damage by tinkering with the truss rod or the bridge? Is there a definitive way to tell? Also, on my guitar, the higher strings are closer to the neck that the lower ones.. it this something adjusted at the bridge? Best video on this Ive seen yet gj.

  • PRS?

  • @SstalkerS Paul Reed Smith. Good guitars, really expensive.

  • @SstalkerS Hahaha, thought you were asking the other guy what a PRS was, my bad.

  • @DelDuio I was asking if the guitar is a Paul Reed Smith, because of that signature on the guitar head...

  • my truss rod is weird its like a big block of metal how would i adjust that?

  • very useful vid, but one question though.

to lower the strings, which side should i turn? consider that the fretboard is facing me. left? or right?

is there like a procedure, i used to lower my bridge on my ibanez rg350 thought that it'd help, but after watching this, should i

    1) adjust the bridge back to it normal height

    2) loosen up the strings

    3) turn the rod?

  • @nicksatch You don't want to adjust your action with the truss rod. Think of it like any screw or lid: Righty-tighty, lefty, loosey. Tighen the neck, if the strings are bowing the neck forward... loosen it, if the rod is too tightly forcing the neck backward.

Tightening the truss rod with, in affect, bring the strings a little closer to the fretboard, but it's still best to use the saddles to adjust the string height.

  • in my case i have the strings very close to the fretboard so the frets buzz and the bends just kills me so should i adjust it clockwise or counter clockwise ?

  • i fucking hate truss rods.....

  • thanks for the vid, those pics are what i was looking for now i can tell when is the action too high. and mine was too high

  • so going clockwise makes it straighter or does it increase the bow on the neck?

  • Omg thank you soo much this helps alot!!!

  • whats the ong on the end?;o

    i like it

  • smooth by carlos santana i believe

  • im getting my strings higher

  • Did you film this in your bathroom?

  • i had 2 use a bit of metal that goes into the allenkey and pull it really hard and it didnt brake.

though it was off price drop tv

  • I have heard both good and bad, mostly bad, that using the truss rod to lower your strings is potentially dangerous. Most people are telling me to file down my bridge. Which route is easiest, and safest? Thanks.

  • @m16kidd

Yes, if you're trying to get the strings lower you'll have to over tighten the neck. I'd rather risk screwing up my bridge than my truss rod. Then again, my guitar is set-neck.

  • @m16kidd file?if you mean just lowering down your bridge then just go with that...dont mess with the truss rod if there's no reason other then straighten(with a slight forward bow) the neck from humidity-temperature changes and-or heavier string gauges that apply more forward pressure on the neck, thats what the truss rod's job is for,in other words dont mess with stuff for no reason or when you dont know what it is you're doing you'll only make things worse

  • Helpful, thanks.

  • loosen that g and d string bud

  • sir how can you straighten a warped neck? and what are the causes that make a neck warped? thnkz!

  • time and cold i know can warp the neck

  • i got a new ltd f-400 and i change the strings and have drop c tuning..My neck is unadjustable, the strings are buzzing..I don't know where is the problem..I think the problem is me,but i do everything to sound proper, but maybe it's the bad piece...i don't know,i'm desperate..

  • "My neck is unadjustable, but maybe it's the bad piece"

sounds like a seriously bad piece, dude. Where did you buy it? you might have bought a copy.

  • what do you mran yor neck is unadjustable?

its probably your bridge...the action is too low, just loosen it...i have an f-50 lol

  • How does it sound in standard tuning?

  • you've put on higher strings for drop C, they're thicker.. :p raise your action at the bridge.

With a factory setup on an LTD (I have an MH400) there shouldn't be much relief. So unless you've upping the string tension (guage without tuning down) then you shouldn't be able to adjust the truss rod much.

If the string tension goes up then the neck will bend and THEN you need to tighten the truss rod.

  • @cathwinch i have an MH400NT also, and if you go into drop tuning, you're going to have fret buzz on the 1st fret. I just did my truss rod right now and it sounds brilliant. They really should give you more relief when they set up their guitars with actives... most people go into drop C for metal. haha.

  • take it to get set up and they will fix it. try getting it pleck'd and your guitar shouldn't have anymore problems. dont try this yourself until you know exactly what your doing

  • Remember guys you should NEVER adjust your truss rod while driving. If you crash you could potentially snap it or strip the threads.

Anyway, I like to use a 1m ruler placed over the frets and a few feeler gauges to determine the relief, then tighten until the neck is straight, then adjust the bridge, then adjust the truss rod again if I hear buzzing.

  • well if the strings are to close to the neck cant you lower your bridge a bit or is that a bad idea?

  • the bridge is probably the safest way to 'adjust' your strings and action and what not. however to get the guitar up to par, you cant omit one or the other. its all one instrument/all works together.

i feel that most guitarists shy away from the truss rod and just make bridge adjustments, like i.

  • rickyjshiznit You should be removed from here, you are a foul mouthed moron with a obviously small vocabulary.

  • lol i've been playing bass for 12 years and i was always iffy on the h whole truss rod issue. i watched this video and adjusted my new fretless bass. i was getting buzzing on my d,g and c string. so i loosen my truss rod almost a whole rotatiion. now my bass sounds awsome and no more buzzing on my imaginary fret 1 and 2. my harmonics even soundbetter! thank you internets and ivideosong man.

  • my guitar had huge action and intonation issues until I adjusted my truss rod. turns out the rod was never tightened so I had to make a full turn. now it is sitting happily with perfect action and great intonation

  • You should NEVER adjust your truss rod while the strings are are tuned up to pitch. You could strip it!

Also you should first try adjusting the bridge to improve the action. The main purpose of the truss rod is to provide additional stiffness in the neck and to compensate for the tension of the strings.

  • Please do not try to adjust your string height with the truss rod...total bullshit!!

That's not at all what the truss rod is for. What a lameass video...

  • my guitar's truss rod won't turn either way. should i just give a whack?? im having buzz on string 1 &2 at fret 1-3

  • hey, I'm having a lot of buzz on the nineth fret.

I've done all the adjustments on my bass, the truss rod, the bridge, the strings, but I keep getting buzz on this specfic fret.

I can't figure it out why this is happening...any ideas?

    Can someone help me?

  • File the fret a little bit

  • Take it to a guitar shop and they can fix it, the fret is most likely uneven and giving a nasty sustain killing buzz.

  • There is a possibility that fret wire could be worn.

One of my ibanez guitars has that problem.

  • Yes, I also had this problem and got a decent set of strings and it fixed it.

  • I changed the strings...

    The problem keeps going.

  • you may have to file down the frets.

  • Eric Foreman from thats 70's show??

    :P

    he actually sounds like him.

  • Donna was hot

  • @crazychimp666 holy shit

  • @crazychimp666 he does and all.

  • @crazychimp666 couldnt be....tht was in the 70s..lol:P

  • man, I have a gibson strat and its a pain to have to take it to the tech each fucking time I broke the strings, I definately need a normal guitar

  • Fucking retard! "A Gibson Strat?" No, that was the latex dildo in your gay ass!

  • ...Gibson Strat..? and why the fuck do you have to take it to a tech when you broke your strings...?

  • u fucking dumbass what the fuck is a gibson strat? and who the fuck takes a guitar to a guitar tech when they break a string and what the fuck do you mean normal guitar? an acoustic? i fucking hate clueless dick heads like you

  • ??? wtf are you talking about do you own an imaginary guitar or some shit

  • for kaleluk31 : u just buy branded guitar n your problem settle...

    hahaha

cause, guitar low brand, very hard for setting....

  • does anybody own a peavey hp signature exp electric guitar, mine is warping after having no problems for a year, and i have twisted both ways and it is getting worse help lease

  • i was trying to ajust my tuss rod, i lostened it so much the truss rodd allan key nut unscrewed off, does that mean i broke it?

i put it back on and screwed it in but im still having problems i still cant gwet rid of the fret buzz on the low E

  • its probably your bridge

  • too much talking

  • Comment removed

  • watch the video and he explains it all you piece of shit.

  • what about a rod stewart adjustment?

  • Fucking LOL! I want one!

  • aww u gonna cry

  • well that nice, i would love u to be my day, pfft ur a sik fuck

  • its one of the ways of adjusting it. you really only want to adjust the truss rod if your neck has a bow causing the problem with the action.

  • if a professional repairman accidentally breaks my guitar while he is doing that...what are the liabilities there? is he responsible to repair all damages he caused? or maybe just get me a new guitar altogether?

  • does this help get rid of fret buzz?

  • it can... but so can other stuff

  • Sure does

  • the guy says let it sit an hour or so... it will take a day to properly set.

  • what's the song at 4:20?

  • smooth

  • 4:20 is Smooth by Santana

  • Probably the worst guitar to use as a demo. Most guitars use a hex key (or Allankey in some countries). Fender uses them, Gibson uses them, so why use a PRS as a demo?

  • i don't think its the worst one he could use..coulda picked one that adjusts at the bottom of the neck..lol

  • lol yeah, I didnt use that wrench

  • i can break my guitar if i do that?

  • If you listen to this moron, yes.

  • Don't you think it's a bit erroneous to mention string height as a gauge to see if the truss rod needs adjustment?

  • so your basically saying that if the dumb fuck from guitar center stripped out the allen rench "bolt" that which tightens/loosens my truss rod then there is no way to replace it and my guitar is fucked?

  • what kind of guitar is it??

  • I would say Guitar Center owes you a new guitar or cash to replace it. They'll probably try to give you shit about it and only offer store credit. I fk'n hate guitar center.

  • Which way do you turn it for bow or relief?

BTW, is it actually a "nut" rather than a "bolt" that you are adjusting slightly?

  • For more relief you turn it counter clockwise. For lesser relief you turn it clockwise.

  • Could be either way depending on the guitar. I think most are counterclockwise (viewing from the guitar body) for bow.
