  • Mark O'Conner - Amazing!

Distasteful amount of reverb on Mark O'Conner's fiddle - Unnecessary, Annoying.

  • That Half Step bend @ 1:37 is boss

  • GOD Rob Wasserman is sick...

  • "Spacegrass Pimp" Best line in a long time.

  • Love those purple pants! LOL. I usually wear bright orange on stage. Wish I could find some of those without donating an arm and leg to a custom tailor.

  • Tony Rice, the only guitarist worthy of Mark O'Connor. What a great video.

  • they sure can pack a lot of music in a four minute song.

feels like i'm flying through space when I listen to this!

  • excellent pot smokin music

  • The bigger Ricky Skaggs gets, the skinnier Tony Rice gets. I think Ricky is sneakin' into Tony's House and stealing his groceries.

    Or maybe not.

  • @elkabong453 LOL

  • BADASS. nuff said

  • @weanus18 Mark might have the pants, but Tony's still got the smokin' break.

  • Wearin that muthacfuckin bass slam out.

  • totally amazing....

  • Tony is pretty much the shit - just listen to Backwaters or River Suite for Two Guitars - great melodic stuff and improv. I believe he has the most distinct sound of any flatpicker and is also most mimicked

  • Rice Grisman have a cd thats been out for a few years called tone poems. I gotta buy a new one one I wore the old one out they have it oozing out of every note . The smell of greatness.

  • @jumpinjaxart One of the best concerts I ever saw - Vassar Clements (with a guitar player whose name I unfortunately forget) warmed up for David and Tony at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. It was the last concert of the Tone Poems tour. The whole concert was like 3 1/2 hours of music - just stupendous playing by everyone involved.

  • @nlandess was the guitar player with vassar richard betts?

  • @guitarmcman nope - I don't know that I would recognize this guy's name, but I would know Dickie's hat and moustache and playing anywhere.

  • Jesus and the 3 apostles bluegrass band

  • eat my dust more like catch me if you can these guys r great :)

  • Brilliant!! I love their first LP, a masterpiece from start to finish!

  • great show

  • When one can can play like Marc O'Conner, they are entitled to wear whatever the fuck they want. Like Jimi Hendrix and Beethoven.

  • @ezekieloak bill cosby up the language.

  • Great song! I didn't know that Randy Johnson was a fiddle player. Nice purple pants. Hardee har har

  • that isnt that is Mark O Connor on the fiddle

  • I know, it was a joke. He kind of resembles Randy Johnson the baseball player.

  • Show some of that Wasserman...The bass players always get shafted on coverage. he's superbadass

  • he is the best, by far, i have seen him live many of time, did not even reconize him here

  • He is damn good....but the best by far....?

Edgar Meyer....Wooten....Pastorious....The guy from Rancid ;)

    He's got some competition...

  • ya i guess i used some strong words there, Claypool also

  • What year is this?

  • GRISMAN IS A MADMAN!!!

  • perfect instrumental..dawg rules!!!

  • Just MASHING! TOP shelf and cream of the crop there- so inspirational.

    Banjoistically yours,

    Jon Erc

  • Grisman, Rice, O'connor, and Wasse all BEASTS! Don't get mad and smash me for this but does anyone or did anyone ever wonder if Mark O'connor is gay, I mean the hat and strange outfits all the time, that's all I'm saying. I'm not saying that made him gay and that all people who look like that are gay...but you had to of wondered..... he is still the man.

  • I don't think he is. I think Mark just likes to give the concert goers a visual feast as well as aural!

  • yeah, i agree. it is hilarious to see him dress like that, especially 15-20 yrs ago, haha

  • he's got a wife now thats impossible

  • Dude I didn't say he was gay, I said he dressed gay....and this video is proof. I just asked if anyone ever wondered.

  • Grisman's early music and bands like this one are still completely head and shoulders the best of the genre. He (they) invented it and no one else to follow has been as compelling. Sure there are many virtuosos in is wake (on all instruments), but they all know who the god of newgrass is. Taste matters more than chops (they all have both of course), and no one had Grisman's taste and suave, relaxed drive. Also his fluid use of odd and shifting meters - much imitated, never matched.

  • the "SMOKING GRASS BOYS"..AS ROWAN CALLED THIS CREW..

  • Mark O'Connor, Tony Rice. and Rob Wasserman? What were all the good players busy?

  • Are you kidding? You think Rob Wasserman sucks?

  • Yes, I was kidding.

  • Ce doigté à la mandoline et à la grat....

    PPFFFFFFF !!!! Une tuerie.

  • Va donc vouère l'album "So What" par Dave Grisman & Jerry Garcia. Miles Davis au banjo c'est pas rien !

  • Eat my dust bitches

  • Man I really like Mark O'Connors effect on the fiddle.

  • this is the coolest music real master dawgs

  • it would be better with less bass

  • Bass Helps fill in the empty parts. But I dont enjoy the bass solo

  • o'connor looks like captain psychedelic...awsome song ..great to see it out here !!

  • I wish somebody would please post Grisman's song Thailand. It's one of the best things he ever did. If I had known he wasn't going to release it on DVD I never would have sold my LP. :(

  • Their '77 album is SO GOOD.

  • They sound EXACTLY like JLP's group. The level of musicianship is REALLY high here!

  • JLP?

  • So many wonderful 'Grass Fusion' songs, another new favorite... David is out-of-this-world! (I love the Freddie Mercury look on the violinist as well) David will be playing at FloydFest at the end of July, Tony Trischka appears the following day. Google it!

  • Or 'newgrass' I should say. :P

  • Mark looks like a pimp from the 70~s, playin the violin like a badass mf! Great song Grisman and company rules on this song! Have this on lp, so sick!

  • Where can I get this on LP?

  • LP? well, if you can find the first DGQ record it's on that one.

If you have the capability Dawg is download friendly, so a lot of his shows are available at various d/l sites, and the Quintet is still doing that tune. And really well, IMHO.

  • Tony Rice... Fast and accurate as nobody else, but he plays the same stuff over and over... If you've heard a few of his solos in other songs, he's just rehashing his pentatonic licks. Actually, I enjoy his rhythm playing much more than his soloing. Great tune though!

  • People will hate you for saying that. But guess what? Too damn bad, because you're right. It IS all the same stuff. Even today, anyone who is an accomplished guitar player and who understands theory can see what he's playing, and you're right. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great, obviously, but you're right.

I still love him though, super badass.

  • Hehe People may hate me all they want. I don't mean to be smart or start a "who's better than who" discussion, I just stated my opinion that I feel TR is too repetitive in his playing. I like more melodic phrasing, not just hot licks. But as I as said, his rhythm playing is superb. On the Tone Poems album with Grisman, his rhythm playing really shines.

By the way, what's with Mark O'Connor's clothes??? "My Pimp Years"? LOL!

  • He looks like a theater wardrobe chest exploded on him...

  • I was gonna cite Tone Poems as a good example, and though I haven't heard very much of his music, I was kinda thinking the same thing before I read your comment.

  • i'd like to see you do what he does

  • I'm talking from a listener's perspective. What I can produce is not the point. I've never said anything about Tony's skills - he's tremenduously good - but compared with other pros (Scott Nygaard, Russ Barenberg for instance), I personally find his playing less interesting because of repetitiveness and focus on licks instead of melody. That's just my opinion, and others may very well disagree.

  • dude he was the one that scott nygaard and so many more got their style from. he is the best!!!

  • When they started out, there weren't that many bluegrass guitar soloists, so of course he was a great inspiration. But they have been able to incorporate so many other interesting ideas in their solos which I feel Tony Rice hasn't. To me Tony Rice is a little like the Eric Clapton of acoustic guitar. People say Eric is God, the best, and whatever - but he just ain't.

  • Tony isn't the best but what is your point?

  • No particular point. I just stated my opinion that I personally don't find Tony's solo playing all that interesting and that I think he is overrated. I believe this is an open forum, and we are allowed to share different opinions? I've not been aggressive, attacked anyone personally, just stated my opinion. If that offended you, my apologies to you, sir/madam.

  • Overrated in the fact that he helped create the art of flatpicking? I wouldn't consider a legend overrated. He may not be as good as what is out their today (that's debatable) but that doesn't all of a sudden diminish his accomplishments to now being overrated. You can like who you like, that's your right, but don't be a smart ass punk like the rest of them on this site or most of us won't care to give two shits about your opinion.

  • Overrated in the fact that his legend or pioneer status obstructs people in judging his music on its own terms. Once again, all I've said is I find his soloing repetitive and very little melodic (which is even observable, not just subjective opinion); however, I love his rhythm playing. Do you play?

  • Well I'm sorry you feel that way. I enjoy the hell out of his playing. Maybe you're just not musically educated enough to enjoy what he's doing and that could be understandable. Do I play? Asking me if I play is like asking the pope if he prays. Yes sir, I play, well enough to have a major label record deal. You have a good day tomorrow. Hopefully it will be a bit more positive of a day for you than today was.

  • My day has already started and is every bit positive, but thanks a lot. As for musical education, I'm not formally trained, but I do know a bit of theory and having played guitar and listened a lot to (different kinds of) music for the past 20 years have enabled me to voice an educated opinion. Anyways, how about we leave it at you like Tony's solo work, I don't? Congrats upon your record deal and best of luck with your musical pursuits.

  • Personally, I disagree with SpiritLevelBuble, but he's stated his opinion civilly. What's he said to deserve the "smart ass punk" remark?

  • There is a difference between flaming musicians to get a reaction and posting an honest opinion. SpritBubble has every right to post his/her feeling about Tony's playing. It didn't appear to be disrepectful, just blunt. I have played for 29 years and happen to be a big fan of Tony. But in truth, I undertand the point Spirit is making. Some people have developed a very thin skin regarding Tony's playing. They have a difficult time dealing with any level of criticism.

  • But, I have listened to so many of Tony's solos and I've found that he does use the same phrasing over and over for his solos. This isn't always the case, but he does it enough that it's noticeable and almost predictable. He is a pioneer, no question. He's a tremendous talent. But that doesn't mean that everyone has to worship him blindly and without condition. Still, I hope he continues to play for many years.

  • Absolutely disagree. If it weren't for Tony, you most likely would have never heard of Scott or Russ. Tony set the standard, others have came along and broke it by learning from it. I don't understand your point anyway. What a musically childish debate to begin with.

  • Rice is the KING of rhythm Guitarist.

  • Agree with you on that one, at least when it comes to bluegrass and folk music. I think my favorite is when he plays Sally Goodin with the Tony Rice Unit. Such a powerful rhythm playing at that tempo for that long! Amazing.

  • they had to be nose diving before that tune. Whats the BPM on the EMD? lol

  • Brilliant!! Gypsy jazz at it's very best. I loved the way that everybody was in such good synch. Django Rheinhardt - who's he?

  • haha

  • I saw the David Grisman Quintet in Boxeman Montana in 1980. The lineup was Grisman, Rob Wasserman, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, and Mark OConnor on guitar. The most amazing music I have ever seen/heard in my life. And the ticket cost $5. :-)

  • Ilove any grisman project,but i think the best lineup was:Grisman Rice,Philups,Marshall

    and Darol Anger.

  • Excellent Video !!! Thanks for the posting.

  • Man!! Grisman, Rice, O'Conner, classic DGQ, post more!

  • Grisman plays the bluegrass mandolin.

DGQ Rocks!!! Been doing this a long time!

Anyway I really wish someone would upload Dawg's Rag... That's his best song.

  • What's Grisman playin?

  • A monteleon. I think thats the way you say it?

  • yep, thats the one

  • I think he is playing a Kentucky Dawg F-5 which is a copy of the Monteleone F-5 that was custom built for him in the late '70's early 80's. The black Monteleone is featured on the cover of the "Quintet '80" album... going by memory of a miss spent youth...

  • I love the bass and fiddle with this. Grisman's fingers are as fast as Hendrix's. Love this bluegrass. now I know why Jerry Garcia was always doing a bluegrass side project.

  • Hey come check out our new grass vids!!!

    smokin hot ;)

  • Tony was so killer and looked clean a true monster!

  • cool! too much effects on o'connor's fiddle though ....he sounds so much better than that !

  • Fantastic! When was this recorded? Gasoline Brothers at their absolute finest!

  • it really doesn't get much better than this when it comes to classic bluegrass. i've seen Grisman a few times with various groups including some quite intimate settings and they have never disappointed. always a bunch of amazing musicians.

  • awesome!

    they are so young :)

  • He's looking down at his feet, plus he's the one on national TV not the teachers. Not trying to start a flame war here but I never have caught Tony looking at his picking hand, even if he does who cares, its perfect in my opinion.

  • Hate the bass playing,,,,,,,,,,,toooooooo much

  • Great performance but I hate the bass as well. I don't think you'd hate it as much if it didn't sound so tinny. It's mic'd horribly. I think it's the pickup.

  • Yes, Tony has the most amazing right hand of anyone, and he does what 99% of guitar teachers tell you NOT to do. That is stare at your picking hand while playing. Incredible.

  • Who taught you to play?

  • At 47, I have been to guitar camps by Steve Kaufman, Beppe Gambetta, Dan Crary, Rolly Brown, Tony McManus, Tommy Emmanuel, Roland White, John Carlini..just to name a few.

  • Guitar players take note of Tony's right hand. Perfect technique!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Man Now That Is Some Bass Playing!!!! Bryn Davies Eat Your Heart Out!!

  • Dang, that's good.

  • ssssmokin'!!!!!

  • I would just like to point out the obvious, Tony is playing the '35 bone prior to the ever-famous pickguard. This is really killer stuff.

  • I've heard quite a few versions of this Grisman classic and this version is easily my favorite. Thanks for the video.

  • Jazz Grass at it's best.

  • holy fuckin' shit give that bass line some credit
