  • @ThaSchwab I was just on their website last night, and they have an enrollment of 165. They take people when there is a hole to fill in orchestras. But they are one of the top music schools in the country.

  • Could someone please explain to me why the "prestigious" Curtis Institute accepts only students who need the LEAST amount of training? Kind of unfair, don't you think?

  • @ThaSchwab OMG I FEEL THE SAME WAY! That's y i always say the BEST teachers are the ones who can create perfection out of mediocracy, or an easier way to put it would be "the ones who can mold a beginner into a professional in a matter of 4 years or so.

  • @ThaSchwab I don't know if that's true. Curtis accepts students who have great technique, and then helps them grow as musicians, not just as technicians.

Also, surely you're not suggesting that top conservatories should start rejecting the best applicants and take mediocre ones...?

  • @vp1981ad

Of course not. But a 4% acceptance rate is a little bit ... too low. I would think anything comparable to a school like NYU or the like (20-30-ish).

  • @ThaSchwab Well... Curtis has a fixed number of students they can take every year, based on the endowment and the faculty. Are you suggesting they should expand their program 5-fold just in order to be more like NYU?

  • @vp1981ad you dont just need great technique. your technique has to be the same level of your musicality. Basically, you have to be the best

  • @ThaSchwab That's not necessarily true. Curtis definitely has a reputation for educating some of the most brilliant minds in music, however that doesn't mean that at the time of acceptance it's alumni were at the top of the game. That is why there is a need for education in the first place. Some of Curtis' students get accepted before they finish high school and spend more than 4 years studying there and even if they finish in 4 years these people get A LOT of training.

  • @ThaSchwab But to answer your question, I do not think it unfair. I think it is perfectly fair that these people have such a great opportunity to study with some of the world's most gifted musicians and teachers. The auditions and interviews are the determining factors for admission just like any other music school. Why is that unfair?

  • @ThaSchwab: Their stated mission can be found on their website: "The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. " It's not American Idol, it's not a public service institution, and it has nothing to do with being fair or unfair, or whether they ought to make their admission percentage more like NYU's. For better or worse, like it or not, that's what they do.

  • @ThaSchwab They accept the top musicians because they are teaching very advanced music. They can't just spend time educating those who didn't practice as much as the top music students.

  • @ThaSchwab WHY would you even say that? I honestly believe that Curtis takes the BEST musicians, and if you have any question about that, just check out their graduated students and what they are doing now. They clearly accept the most talented and potential students to keep up the tradition of excellence in their school.
