  • To the OP of the video, for the ICV to be connected to its respective vacuum hoses, yet unplugged while the car is running, shows there is likely some type of vacuum leak somewhere under your hood, as the ICV is the integral part of an electronic system that controls the idle of the m42, and if it isnt functioning, then you may have just gotten lucky enough to have a vacuum leak that is static enough to allow the car to idle.

  • To the OP/others experiencing similar problems, you must keep in mind that these are all old cars, whether they saw regular maintenance or not they will all have worn parts needing replacing due to age and driving in varying environments over their lifetimes.

Here are some common things to check: Fuel Filter, Fuel Lines around Filter, Fuel Injectors, FPR, Spark Plugs, Vacuum/Coolant hose mess under the Intake Manifold(s), Intake Mani Gaskets, ICV, Intake Boot, Air Filter

  • @kennyown

Fuel filter, intake mani gasket, intake boot, and air filter are all new.

Other things need looking over that you listed. Should I undo the manifold and look at all the hoses?

  • Hey nice car! Mine does the same thing too, even with all new vac hoses, plugs, squeaky clean ICV and MAF. It just bounces ever so slightly but you can hear it, and it hesitates whenever you give it some gas. Try O2 sensor? That's basically the only thing I have left.

  • Test compression and got

    1-4

    215, 210, 215, 210

So it's nothing like a piston ring or headgasket.

  • Did you ever get this idle issue fixed? I have nearly the same car and its doing exactly the same thing (belt squeal and all)...

  • @E39Spartan

Not yet. For the belt squeal it probably just needs a new belt. I only have one belt on it.

Let me know if you get it figured out.

    My ideas were:

    Blown piston ring

    ICV problems

    MAF

    Oxygen sensor

    Vac leak

  • @cjdontthink2

I bought the car (91 318i) a few weeks ago. Spent that time dealing with a start up issue. Turned out to be a brand new but faulty fuel pump.

When the car finally started last night, it sounded just like yours.

My list of potential problems is similar to yours except I have replaced nearly all the vacuum lines trying to fix the no start issue, so I'm guessing that's not my problem.

Anything else you list is viable at this point

Will let you know if it improves...

  • @E39Spartan

Have you checked out your ICV at all?

It's really easy to get to and can cause problems. Idk if mine is faulty or not.
