The K5HLL exists, but this isn't one of them. This is a properly tuned K5HL sounding the D# minor sixth that was always intended for the K5HL. All the earlier K5HL horns sounded the wrong notes. It's too bad Nathan/Airchime didn't correct the tuning sooner, since it's a fantastic chord! Replace the 1L bell with a 5 bell and you get the Canadian-tuned K5H.
@BNSF2184 The 7500s have the old K5HLs, which never sounded the specified chord to begin with. They consistently had an out-of-tune 1L bell sounding a B instead of a C, and a 4a bell (B) in place of a 4 bell (C) to complete the chord (without which the C and B notes would conflict). The horn in this video sounds the intended K5HL chord of C, D#, F#, A#, C from bells 1L, 1, 2, 3, 4 (check it on a keyboard).
I thought the 77/7600s had the old old ones and the 7500s had the one ur describing and the 74/72/73/78/79/66/67/68/69/6240-6430? have the K5HLL. (Oh and 6234 and 6235 have the same as the 7500s)
@BNSF2184 Some units have had the horns replaced, so there is variation across the number series. But they are all variations of the K5HL, because they all have only one "L" bell (the 1L bell, producing either a B or a C). The "true" K5HLL is apparently extremely rare (a half-dozen units) and produces a sound much like a Nathan M5, using TWO "L" bells (1L and 3L).
I think CSXT and NS should get some of those ES44C4 units. NS could number theirs from 7800-7990, and CSXT could number theirs from 3200-3550. BTW, are these AC drive? Just wondering, because if they are, they would be great for CSXT and NS coal trains.
I heard 100 more ES44DC units are being ordered by CSX along with I'm thinking 200 more ES44AC units. Almost all the AC6000CW units are stored and they are going to transformed into ES60AC units.
@BNSF2184 Well UP is going to change their AC60CW's to AC4460CW's and CSX going to keep the AC60CW's as they are or send it to Erie PA to transformed to a ES60AC
They have A1A 6-axle, 4-motor bogies [trucks] with AC traction.
The concept is based on the fact that in terms of tractive effort,
6 axles of DC traction = 4 axles of AC traction.
The goal is to apply some of the advantages of AC traction (easier maintenance & longer traction motor life), to non-heavy haul assignments that don't need maximum tractive effort; e.g, light, long-haul intermodal.
Those are awesome units! I'm glad they put the door on the right side on the front so you can tell the difference between these and regular GEVO's. Plus the K5HLL horn is somewhat unusual on these engines. Great catch!
I'm sorry. Yes, you have corrected me. There are 3 rather than 2. I seemed to had gotten mixed up between wheel and traction motor number. Thanks for the heads up.
The difference is the cab entrance door is to the left rather than the right. The second is the side vents toward the rear is similar to that of D9-44CW.

god, I can't believe this is a ES44C4 with K5HLL (or K5HL? Five Chime Consultants says K5HL).

that sucks I kinda liked the AC60CW. I liked the gray and blue w/ yellow lettering. I hate the new CSX paint scheme.

Bot the GE evolution series is more efficients and makes less pollution that is why GEVOs are my favorite locomotives
1petealmquist1 2 years ago 2
@CSXRP Well not really. CSX brought that AC6000CW's out of storage and some will be ES60AC and other will just be the AC60CW's!

@nsgevo89 NS doesnt buy AC traction units, explaining the ES40DC and the SD70M-2 (not ACe).
ConAmMD80fan 1 year ago
@ConAmMD80fan NS has since bought ES44ACs and SD70ACes for coal service. There's photo evidence on railpics.
