How do you achieve this with no block-in phase or preplanning?

Even very good artists like Anthony Ryder and Chin-cheng Hung use a block in phase or some kind of planning with heavily photo-referenced works.

Could you explain your process in the beginning stages?

I'm not saying there is any foul play, let me disclaim that, and I know you can practice enough to narrow your process down to very few steps but he seems to go in completely blind and never adjust ANYTHING once its on the page.

I like how you started with the eyes and drew out. So many of my profs try to teach us to draw everything at once to get a general feel and then add detail, but I've always felt more comfortable working a little bit at a time (though it only works when I'm working from still life and pictures... I suppose figure drawing is a totally different can of worms when it comes to technique.) Anyways, awesome job!

Did you draw a line drawing (without tones) of the face in a very light pencil before starting the video? Im asking this because most artists draw the whole face in before they begin toning in order to get the proportions correct. I have never heard of someone who goes straight to toning.
