LOL, now that i watch this ant the first opening of the series I believe what the author said that originally he didnt intended yugioh to develope around the card game but about recovering the memorys of the pharaoh and the cards where just a plus. and know we have a franquise which sold over 18 billion dollars. I think it is fair to say that this series overwhelmed dragonball

@krissthean This series didn't go far and by the time the Yugioh you see now (Like the newer version of this and those 3 other series) came around the time Dragon Ball GT finished probably. So no. This series never did have its chance at overwhelming Dragon Ball.

@Speeder109 i think you did not understand my point. firstly by this series i mean yugioh as a whole not just season zero. and obviously, when i said yugioh overwhelmed dragonball i didnt mean they both aired at the same time and yugioh had more fans, i talk by data and statistics, yugioh sold far more money than dragonball without having to be re aired more than 20 time (like dragonball by cartoon network), so yeah it totally defeated dragonball

For a show to overwhelm another, they need to be around at same time cause how can you overwhelm a show that is already over and has stopped really doing anything? This season of Yugioh was the only season around when Dragon Ball was around and it didn't get too popular. The other Yugioh series came when Dragon Ball was over. So maybe if they were around at the same time they would be at neck and neck.

@Speeder109 so you say that for one to beat another they must had aired at the same time? i can see some logic in that since you could say that for the judgment to be accurate they should compete under the same conditions (in this case same year means same audience and economic situations, etc) except that you forgot they did, in fact dragonball had an advantage, when yugioh started airing in occident dragon ball was already airing, and when yugioh ended dragonball was still airing

@Speeder109 not really, it was only 2 years. but that is when it becomes interesting. yugioh season 0 aired in jp 1998 - 1998, from season 1 to end (of the yugi series) 2000 - 2004. dragonball z in jp 1989 - 1996. now in the rest of the world. yugi series 2001 - 2005, dragonball z 1991 - and still going ( actually till 2009 when they switched it with kai which is pretty much the same but in HD)

@Xinathor Nah, Yami was like, very anti-hero in this series, a vigilante to be exact. In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters series, Yami, aka Pharaoh or Atem becomes a more heroic "got to save the world and everybody in it" type of person, though part of it might have been Yugi's influence on him, The kind and gentle spirit of Yugi made Atem the person he was from The Battle City series onward. Atem even stated in the last episode that he wouldn't be who he is without Yugi

@Raylinium Ano... Those aren't Synchros... Synchros weren't around for Season 0 [The opening this is for]. You can simply judge a card by its background. Also, looking at the monsters themselves you can easily see that they aren't Synchros because Yami's is Dark Magician and Kaiba's is Battle Ox. Both of which aren't Synchros. I don't mean to sound mean with this, but if you want to see modern time cards, watch 5Ds for Synchros. Our time cards had no Synchros. [Boy, I sound old...]

Then next and newest one is Zexal which takes place SO much farther away from 5D's and its in space i think :D

Same reason Bulma has green hair in the anime, and Trunks has lavender hair. While in the comic they both have purple hair. And it's also why Vegeta was red hair up until the moment he arrived on Earth. Toei Animation just guesses sometimes instead of asking the author or waiting till he/she appears in color.

That's why I think people fanfreaked when there was a whole season spent developing such a cool game, and then getting the cards in real life, but slowly, the Yugioh series lost it's soul... and a majority of what was good about in the first place was gone for good.
