Why does rap even exist? Why didn't the offspring of these artists keep this great music going on? Wish I could go back in time and hunt down John O'Connor, I mean the people who started this and talk them out of it.

this song is so gooooooooooooooooood cant get over it when i first heard it it had a really mesmerising quality yo it enraptured and captured i get it
Another reason why lady gaga and bieber songs/videos get more play than an old Shalamar classic like this one, is because that's what the music/entertainment industry chooses to promote. And that won't change until people of like minds decide that they're fed up with the crap that is supposed to pass for music today, and demand a better product. Also because this song is old, and probably not many people are even aware of it's existence to begin with. Especially the younger generation.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you to a certain extent, but to be fair, I think it's because of the mass media promotion combined with technology (sensory overload) that we have today, such as the internet, smart-phones, electronic billboards, computers, is the reason those artist like Gaga, Bieber, Wayne, Rhinna are getting more radio play, millions of hits on YouTube, that this almost 30 year old video by Shalamar didn't have back then.
@DaveWollenberg No one can take over for original classic Shalamar Jody Watley. Jody is the only member from the group to have a nationwide talent search after her departure in '83. Carolyn Griffey comes after Shalamar's Delisa Davis [1984-1990]. To date Griffey has not recorded any material with Shalamar although a member since 2005. Judging from recent performance footage her register is deeper than Howard's and far more masculine overall. The old Shalamar sound anchored by Watley is no more.
It's a shame a song like this one have only 195.365 views while other crap songs like bieber and lady gaga have millions of views. Really people lost their ears...
@Bayay55 LOL! I couldn't agree with you more! I'm soooooooooooo glad I was born in 1972, since being raised in the seventies and eighties had so many awesome advantages like incredibly AWESOME music with SOUL and MEANING. I truly feel sorry for today's generation. They missed out. BIG TIME!!!
It depends, in george martin's words it would sound like that: millions of drunken ruffians are nothing compared to 200000 hand selected and well seasoned knights of eternal taste.
Who gives a funk about numbers, it's always the same (exceptions are always possible of course). The mass goes for the crap, the "underground" is a minority that knows what's really good.
Shalamar is 16 year old french oak matured bruichladdich. Smooth, warming and intoxicating. Take a sip and enjoy!
This video made me sad..i remember this was the time when Shalamar was falling part..and Howard had to the video by himself..and then in the end here..he lowers the volume of all 3 singers..who eventually broke up when the song was released..
This song brings back so many memories, I listened to it over and over and wrote down on the lyrics at work back in the day I'll always remember that like it was yesterday....
I agree, ZACCURIAN. It sends shivers down my spine because I remember the fond memories of this song from when I was in high school. Makes me feel old!
Music like this will never come around again. SOOOOOOOO SAD!
This is R&B, not the FUCKING CRAP BULLSHIT they release these days. The new stuff is FUCKED. Any dumb fucker could make it. I was obviously born in the wrong era.
@shadowmixx Yo I just noticed who hose two are @ the boards Damn I guess when your little you don't pay that much attention to details ....Any way This is My Shit!!!!
@sweetdeedra Yeah you'll have to check out the Unsung they did on Shalamar. They actually said that the group split right around that time.
This is one of my favs. I didn't know it was a single til I saw the Unsung because as a shorty we used 2 play our cousin's music. About 4:00 Howard goes into the "No matter how many times a day, I never get enough of your love....I'm tellin you over and over and over again" it cuts off on this version but it's one of those nuances that makes it memorable.
@sweetdeedra Actually...Jeffery never sang a NOTE on ANY Shalamar record!!It was ALL Jermaine Stewart!!Ah know...coz miss Jody an meh go back to THE day lol (and ah was quite friendly with Jermaine too...til he passed)!!x
According to Jody Watley's interview on Unsung Unfiltered, the only song Jeffrey actually participated on was "Dead Giveaway." Jody sang on all songs except for the title track and "You Can Count On Me" (she got into a dispute with that becuase she was suppose to sing lead on that song, but then Leon Sylvers decided for Howard to sing lead on it instead).
I do my own music but still this is a mystery how Mr. Sylvers get this pieces of music together?? With all this equipment and digital tech today they can do very polished but lifeless tunes. I love it!
Shalamar has always been my favourite band since the early 80´s. Remember me and my friends playing a night to remember, make that move, friends, there it is all day long.....
I'm not a hater, and am a rabid Shalamar fan, but I always hear how much more filling this song would have been with Howard throwing the lead back and forth with Jody. Many may not agree, but true Shalamar fans know their best work was when the dual lead format was utilized...Miss these guys a lot.
@DirtyRed225 Thanx for being true Shalamar people, Dirty Red. I love Howard's work, and no one---not even MJ could outdance the 'Pop-a-long' kid, but taking Jodi off that dual lead was the beginning of the end for the best that Shalamar had to offer. It is what it is...but i can't help but wonder how much heavier my stash of their albums would be had Dick Griffey not made that decision?
Omg!! I love this song. They won't write songs like this or make music like this anymore. His voice gives me such chills! I can listen to this song over and over.
No wonder the group broke up. I love Shalamar's music, but all the attention was on Howard. I caught a glimpse of Micki Free but if I didn't know any better, I would swear this was a Howard Hewett single.
@BricktownBubba This video was apparently done after the group broke up. Jeffry Daniels was the first to quit and did not sing on this but did promo in the Uk and Ms. Jody who quit before the filiming of Dead Giveaway but sang on this song and final album where this is from. The group had been mandated to be Howards vehicle by Griffey and Sylvers,it's on Watley Unfiltered series on her youtube channel. Micki Free was brought in for video but does not sing on this according to album credits.
Watley was on the "Dead Giveaway" video, but afterwards, she quit (that video was done shortly after The Look album was released). Tru Jeffrey quit Shalamar before The Look was completed (he only appeared on "Dead Giveaway"), but was forced to appear on UK shows with the band and the "Dead Giveaway" video so he would'nt get sued because he was still under contract with the band. "Over & Over" was released in late 1983 after Jeffrey and Jody wasa able to quit.
The video came out in the end of 1983 (around the time the single was released, #26 on the R&B charts). Jody split from Shalamar (as so Jeffrey) right after the filming of the video for "Dead Giveaway" in the summer of 1983. Micki Free was always hanging around SOLAR Records and to be a new member of the group, he learned most of the Shalamar songs (before 1983, Micki never even heard of Shalamar and had to research them, see Unsung).
Oh snap, I haven't seen this video since the mid 80's, always enjoyed this one, an this 1983 R&B song, one of the best of that year, with their trademark SOLAR Records, Leon Sylvers III produced sound, this is quallity 80's R&B, no question about it...
An A-M-A-Z-I-N-G God given talent of a voice. This man was born to sing. My favourite ever Shalamar song too. Is Howard Hewett cool or what? Shame this video was made at the time that the great Whately, Daniel and Hewett collaboration was coming apart at the seams. Great memories though.
Even though SHALAMAR didn't last, the music that the group produced was,is,and will always be forever timeless, and I will always love them. Those three stars came together to produce the universe that is SHALAMAR and I am greatful to have been able to witness their music.
First I agree this is one of those songs that stay in your head after you have heard it. For me it was Nuremburg Germany 1983. Did anyone find it strange that at the end of the video on the control board there are the names of Jody Jeffrey and Howard?Just makes you say hmmmmmmmmm!
@cityrayman Dude, towards the end of 1983 or so Howard Hewitt and the rest, as I can recall were not getting on, hence the two strange couple at the start of the video. What a great voice nonetheless, don't you think?
@cityrayman Dude, towards the end of 1983 or so Howard Hewitt and the rest, as I can recall were not getting on, hence the strange couple at the start of the video. What a great voice nonetheless, don't you think?
@cityrayman maybe their names are on the control board to symbolize that they were shutting down, breaking up. I was wondering why I didn't see the rest of the gang ine the video.
@cityrayman I guess they wanted to acknowledge Jody and Jeffrey who had left the group before this single was released. Plus Howard had wanted to continue promoting the album
Proper R & B. Timeless, unlike the fucking shit that is out today (shit may be to generous a word). Ie. snoop dog - You have got to be fucking joking, my dogs won't even listen to that crap. If that gets played on the radio, they piss over the house in rebellion. I love my dogs, they have respect for decent music.
It's true what all y'all said...I love Shalamar...But, keep in mind, the break-up were necessary as earlier Shalamar stuff was "dance beat", or "disco" style hits, with great r & b ballads. But, from 1980-83 music changed alot, and Howard, and the gang had to make a decision, and the conflict in musical directions caused their break up. However, look how well Jody did in 1987-1989, some epic years for her, rivaling Paula Abdul and Janet Jackson, the two big female "killers" at the time.
oh, that last shot where Leon pulls the faders down on Howard, Jody and Jeffrey is haunting and so sad. it's like the director was trying to say something. although, i guess that was already said by having mickey free sitting there.

@cityrayman maybe their names are on the control board to symbolize that they were shutting down, breaking up. I was wondering why I didn't see the rest of the gang ine the video.

@cityrayman I guess they wanted to acknowledge Jody and Jeffrey who had left the group before this single was released. Plus Howard had wanted to continue promoting the album

This is the when R&B was classy, and didn't talk about "booty-calls" and other sexual innuendo. Today's music is shallow...and ghetto.

A good song is a good song. The quality of this groups music never dies.

The only voice that I would dare to compare this guys to is "James 'J.T.' Taylor", the lead singer for Kool & The Gang. Smooth and silky

Over and over and over again! Bring back R&B 80's!!!! You have to feel priviledged to have grown up in an era where Music was just simply GOOD!!
