The reason the X-1 "hurried" into that 1st supersonic flight was because George Welsh, in the swept-wing prototype F-86, did it the day before. The X-1 team couldn't politically afford to lose this competition, so they rush-jobed it the next day, then clamped a secret classification on any news or discussion of the event. In fact, George Welsh went up in the F-86 and popped the B-29 carrying the X-1 and Yeager with another sonic boom while they were climbing for their now famous drop-release.

Welch flew the XP-86 for the first time on Oct 1, 1947, Yeagers X-1 supersonic flight was on Oct 14th. the press blackout was a security protocol for the USAF deemed it a matter of national security. nobody was allowed to reveal the flight for weeks. The F-86 didnt go supersonic until almost a year later. an F-86A went supersonic in Sept 1948. Welch never buzzed the B-29.airspace was restricted. Yeager expressed that wish after his flight and it was retold wrong for years. .
