What a great presence. Not to mention his overwhelming singing voice, his presence on a stage would be very impressive....I even could see/feel it in this film. Bravo!
The Gr8 Lauri-Volpi once claimed that del Monaco had the best B flat of 'em all! After U witness this performance, Lauri-Volpi was 100% accur8=) That B flat has it all! It's perfectly focused. The masterful balance of Chiaro/Scuro. The Squillo is amazing. How I could only wish I was in that theater 2 hear what it must've sounded like!!! No wonder the audience went berserk=)Bravo 2d Gr8est Italian Dramamtic Tenor of all time!
I'm sorry, I do not follow the criticism, but that has never played Othello Caruso,Tamagno? What we incision perfect record, so that it can compare to that of Mario Del Monaco.
At this point, I dare say that Malibran was the greatest soprano of all time! But, we have only passed with no news from any recordings.
The only perfect and powerful voices of the Opera were due.Giacomo Lauri Volpi and
Eccezionale performans di Mario Del Monaco. Mi colpisce la grande tenerezza ed il compiacimento nei confronti di Mario della Arkhipova. Grandi Artisti irripetibili !!
It was complete shock for soviet audience. FIRST TIME Italian tenor of this caliber sang in Bolshoi. They got amazed. It was closed country for decades and people forgot that something like this exists. I WAS THERE... Unforgettable
No doubts some groups want to underestimate all the dificult process European countries spended in Education to arrived to have Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, Beethoven, Mozart, and performers like Miguel Fleta, Callas, Nillson, Bjoerling, long time of studing , lots of money into education and support of well done arts. These countries that only having european Italian and German techers and conductors got to have good performers BUT almost NONE of high quality composer, support Paul Pots. Maledettos!!
To mention Paul Potts in the same sentence as the Late Great Mario Del Monaco is Sacrilegious, insane, utterly ridiculous ,it's like comparing a Ford focus with a Rolls Royce. MDM was truly 1 of the very greats.. if you want to compare some-one to him try Franco Corelli or Caruso.
stupendo quando alla fine si alza e gliene frega nulla dell'Arkipova e s'inchina per gli applausi... chissà se c'era anche Stalin a battere le mani... chi lo sa?
ARE YOU MAD....what an idiotic statement, Paul Potts is a lovely fellow, but could never be an opera singer as long as his willy points south, to even think of comparing them is ludicrous.
lacausina, the answer to that Paul Potts is someone better than Ringo Starr and Fats Domino. I can't go much further. Simon allowed Paul to be popular. Potts should never be named in comparison with the immortal del Monaco.
Just out of sheer curiosity, I searched him to find out who he was, and lo there he was on that contest show with Simon Cowell as a judge! Ha! But ya know, he wasn't all that bad! Don't misunderstand me, people, Potts will never come close to Del Monaco - nobody will - but here is someone of today's generation who doesn't do the rap crap, and he even pleased the unpleasable Cowell. But Del Monaco will always be #1. I do hope Potts can get his teeth fixed someday.
Look and hear. Witness the voice; the emotion; the expression; the heart; the interpertation; and the reaction of the Russian audience. With this blog everyone can see that MDM is the greatest!
You truly are a clown! You attack the great Callas and now Del Monaco? You are a buffoon, this performance is magnificent! You really should stop commenting on great singers, something you have no idea about.
Italians , Greeks, Spaniards, Russians, have passion, physicall strength and education to create such a delivery.
Stop giving potts time on tv when there many capable singers even in england that deserve that time instead, a voice that will sing even musical badly.Respect culture, dont try to make easy money.
nessundorma is right. with the success of mr pott and friends, somebody is laughing at people, it can't be cover like other things in history and lie just to mantain ignorance in the masses. Some countries do not have courage, food, sun and education to bring Del Monacos, the energy of this man is in his balls, passion, like Callas, Corelli, other society has to dream about it and they have pott as a answer.
You are right, it's makes me sad when I realize that those who prefer some "potts" to professional opera singers, especialy great ones, have any idea of the opera style
or music. they are larger audience unfortunatly and they win simply by majority:))
Del Monaco was quite often off pitch and in this case also, but everybody who actualy heard him live were absolutly crasy about his voice, acting and charizma
Carreras and Pavarotti sang at bolshoi too and did not have much success
Bolshoi likes big voices and smaller voices simply don't carry there
bposton, you are so right. How could anyone criticize this greatest of all the greats? They also need their eyes checked, did they not see Mario so humbly but proudly accept the unbelivable ovation? For those who might question, did they not visualize that Arkipova and he do not know what to do to continue the performance, the Russian audience were so excited about how beautifully he had done his aria. Who could conclude anything but you how great he was?
The best tenor of all time and Bolchoi public cannot be wrong for applausing a lot, I applause too and I have listen to this video lots of times. Mario del Monaco the better Don jose ever heard with such a huge voice quality!
ok fabulosa...are you insane. Yes DelMonaco is critiqued for singing to hard, to loud all the time, but please. he really is the greatest of all time. Not many Tenors follow the pianissimo marking at the end of the aria. MDM is a tremendous artist, and has the hugest vocie ever. He is what we ar emissing now days. He is the golden age, so relax with your critisism.
@JCLAWS By the way, Monaco actually succeeds in pulling off something close to pianissimo in his 1963 studio recording with Resnik and Sutherland. Such amazing sounds he made!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'll never understand the general opera public. Big deal - he holds a b flat for nine seconds. It's marked PIANISSIMO!!! He takes unbelievable liberties with the music, and they cheer him for it (or almost everyone... there are boos, too). This is NOT ART - just exciting noise. Sorry. And then he breaks character and hams it up without singing too. Oh brother!!
It's a beautiful aria. Del Monaco has an interesting voice, but he seems to strangle the notes in the back of his throat. Some phrases are so so lovely and passionate they make one want to cry. Others seem like he's working uphill. Thank you for letting us hear it!
He's not working "uphill". he's working down hill, keeping the idea of his larynx down always helped him. If you watch other videos he is even more nuts, like thrusting his arms down (it's something arturo melocchi taught him) This would keep him connected to his body, help him lower his larynx and expand his pharynx...thus he was the loudest tenor who ever lived.
For those who question who the greatest is, they must evaluate how the Bolshoi audience responds to this aria. Watch the end. Listen to the ovation and how Arkhipova as Carmen reacts. I continously play this because I can't get over what I hear and see.

Well i had never heard of Mr. Monaco untill two days ago, he was great!
I don't belive he has the most beautiful of tenor voices..that i still give to Caruso.
He hasn't the charm of Tomagno, as his versions of Esultate show.
He is very powerfull and that in it's self does not make him great.
Gili was great, Caruso was great, Tom Burke was great...Monaco is impressive.
Oh and paul potts is quite dreadfull!

Del Monaco was very popular in the
40s-60s. Made lots of records for Decca/
London, especially with Tebaldi.
Have you heard the computer enhanced
recordings of Caruso and McCormack?
Amazing. Got rid of the tinny orchestra
sound.
