I never understood why these Amish ppl deny modern techniques for farming (a tractor or so) while their techniques are very advanced to thye generations before them...
Very nice video! Sometimes i think the Amish people are the only ones that "get it" lol While the rest of us are trying to still figure it out. We put so much stress upon ourselves that is not needed, like working to have a car, lights, cable, they are all things we can live without, yet we stress to have them! Like I said, "they get it" LOL
@GhostofNewEngland thanks... well, we could be worse off... we could be working just for car lights and car cables. or worse yet, cable cars... or the very worst - light cables... the heavy cables are so yesteryear...
Is this machine made in China and does anybody know how to uses horses to pull a machine. We are running out of oil soon and we'll need to go back to the old ways and actually work for our food instead of relying on Government Handouts and McDonalds. One day all the farms will be owned by one organisation and the guy in charge of sowing will screw up the timings and we'll have a big famine, just like in Ukraine in the 30's with collectivised farms
Great Video. I have an uncle who is amish. We invited him to our home last weekend and he took a shit in the corner of the dining room. All the while muttering something about "Amish Tradition"
@indigolady52 : that soley depends on the individual farmer! Just like everywhere else, to generalize and say all amish are evil and abuse their animals is simply untrue. Its like saying everyone in the state of California is from Los Angeles and is the 'oc type'. This statement is simply untrue. i agree with paragondj, you should research ur facts before posting your opinion on a website...at least know what you are getting into.
I, myself, wonder if horses shouldn't be wild and only to look at - if that... I'm glad you're not cruel to horses, though. I suspect that animals should have the same rights as humans, to be honest. And, in that vein, aren't many humans broken into labor much like a work horse... That is my concern. Maybe not, just asking...
I didn't go into this with any preconceived ideas about Amish or horses or what "romantic" means. My question is, what relationship do my images have with the feelings you're having and the history you've stated? I agree, that cruelty is worth protesting. These images in themselves have no relationship to it. They are about the filmmaker, who you seem to have taking your frustrations out upon... Are you mad that the images exist or that the cruelty exists, I'm confused...
Nope. Not mad or frustrated with you at all. Just keeping it real. It amazes me, having grown up near Amish Country, how almost revered the Amish can be to some people (not necessarily you). Kind of like if you lived near a horse track and people oohed and aahed about the horses, but knew from living there that the horses were many times ill-treated. Wouldn't you say, "Yeah, they're pretty... but..."? I have Amish pictures in my home painted by N.Noel, but I don't mind telling what I saw.
Most people strike me as being cruel without getting anything for their money, as it were. After being there a week, unsafe drivers coming back to Chicago sent me into a panic attack. I try to empathize with ignorance and that sense that we are trapped by circumstances into being cruel. I know, at least in my heart, I have a choice. And that's what I am trying to slow down enough to make... Watching Amish and being in a buggy helped... It would have helped more if I weren't filming.
@ruitevar thanks for commenting! it really felt like i was just documenting... and yet, i kept putting myself in their shoes. i like it when someone lives a life that is so different form my own and yet welcomes me to imagine it as my own.
@natalianicholson I envy them. They were actually lead by someone really smart. Look at the world now it is screwed. Life is about having children in a happy environment. Respecting nature so it too can have life. I am actually thinking maybe I should join them and say sorry for being so stupid. Like I am so over Designer sunglasses and American Idol and Government handouts
@Hetman1974 hey you know they got amish idol, right? i dunno. every culture has shortcomings... infighting... soap operas... i hope life is more about perspective and just trying to do what feels right to the best of your ability. but i felt very much like simplifying my life when there... traffic on the way home made me insane...
I dont know there secret, but the Amish and Mennonites always have the tallest corn around around, over there in Elmira Ontario Canada.Seriously! No doubt about it.Funny Ive never had sweet corn from any of them that I thought was much better tasting than cattle corn though.
I liked the song because it doesn't sound like his normal voice. I liked the rural imagery of a "big brass bed." I also liked the way it suggested a very interdependent romantic relationship. I liked it because it was seductive, which is what that slower way of life did to me when I was so warmly received. I believe that song speaks to a sexuality that is full of both beauty and responsibility. What song might you choose? The horse sounds fit so nicely in this one.
thanksfor your video on shipshewanna amish.Ive been to shipshewanna, and it is lovely and the amish are very cordial and kind to us lookers. Love there way of live too wish one could take a course in how to plow and live natural way, Id be there, love the horses.
This is absolutely WONDERFUL! Terrific videography. I am Amish by heritage from Indiana (North Liberty, St. Joseph Co.), but my family were already becoming secular by the 1880s. My parents collected early American antiques from the communities near where they lived and around Goshen.
very nice. How did you get to do this without the Amish getting upset because you're violating one the rules set by their elders which would be the amish are not allowed to have their pictures taken in any way shape or form?
if you ask and take the pictures from behind, They will typically comply. We lease a team of horse to the Amish in Iowa, I've picked corn with them and helped hay. Interesting folks, but folks just like everybody else. They like to visit.

@ZAGGLETON Yah, that was a good movie... I was surprised, really. They portrayed the Amish objectively, don't you think?

@pwarren1010 Many Amish plant an old open-pollinated (non-hybrid) variety called Lancaster Sure Crop. It is a very tall corn, makes good silage.
