Shelby Steele is absolutely right and proper child rearing enviornments originate at the house! No two ways about it. They learn english techniques and social interaction skills at home. So if the surroundings are designed in a negative format, the child will emerge out of that with a steep hill to overcome. This requires caring parents willing to take time with the kids, help with home work and ask about their day. Not just send them out to where ever just so you can have 'quiet' time.

Dr. Steele's middle name should be "Balls Of." He's a real hero. Try listening to him objectively--what he says is always brilliantly on point and correct. He's not talking down. He's talking truth. In our society, the public discourse on race is shallow, phony, not grounded in reality, and certainly not productive. I am from a poor family and went to very poor schools for elementary, jr, and high school. My schools were 40% black. All I know is this, the white kids would for the most part at least sit still and attempt to learn, almost all the black kids would talk in class, not do homework, say fuck and other words to the teacher, and in general act like animals. Again the white kids didn't. We were all poor.

When people bring up "born out of wedlock" today, they're not talking about marriage alone. They're talking about kids who aren't born into a stable family environment. Granted, not every stable family environment is specifically married, but the wedlock percentage serves as a reliable indicator of the state of affairs.
Kids aren't just being born outside marriage. They're being born outside the support they need.

I think that Bill Cosby had a valid point. Many biological fathers, including my own, abandon their responsibilities and tend to be shiftless. For the ones that are handling their business, my statement doesn't apply to you. It appears that many, not all, African-Americans don't want to hear the truth. Instead, they want to play the blame game. Yes, racial discrimination does exist and permeate our society but that's no excuse not to be their for your child. That's no excuse to be crummy.

And the gap was not small. These stats are availbale on line. Try looking for truth rather than hiding from it.

You sound like a suburban kid. Due to district school laws passed, segregation is emerging again. Many neighborhoods are racially stratified due to racist redlining practices in banking and real estate. Now that many kids are forced to go to local schools, if you live in a poor black neighborhood, the quality of the school will be substantially poorer because many schools are funded through property taxes. Many black children do not have quality education because the schools are poor.
I never denied that.... And yes I do live in an suburban area. But my parents work tougher jobs than most who live in middle class. You can say that they have jobs that the lower class are accustomed to doing. Hell if my parents are immigrants from another country. But yet, they worked their behinds off to get their children and themselves out of the lower class and placed us in the middle class where life overall got better.
The chances of gaining a better education, and better opportunities. Now if my parents who are not only black, but also foreigners can do that. Then what's stopping the rest of us? I understand where you're coming from with giving inner city schools more money. But I've seen this time and time again. You can give those schools money. But the majority of the time, its the ENVIRONMENT around these kids/teenagers is what corrupts these kids. The school can only do so much to help them.
Because when you get out of school, you're going back into the very influential neighborhoods that turn these very kids into criminals or drug addicts.

Colleges and universities are overwhelmingly run by liberal people, that believe in reaching out to Afr American students. First you need to know that most blacks are living in the middle class now. I would also argue that the choices blacks are making to turn away from education are hurting them. I go back and forth on this issue. On one hand, racism isn't enough to keep a people down. Jews face racism, Arabs face racism now in high amounts (not compared to historically, but certainly compared to modern day racism against blacks). But they do fine.
The problem is the welfare state that destroyed the family. Thomas Sowell makes this point - blacks were LESS likely to be born out of wedlock in the 50s (or 40s, I forgot). It's not clear that this is the fault of black people though.

Shelby Steele is absolutely right and proper child rearing enviornments originate at the house! No two ways about it. They learn english techniques and social interaction skills at home. So if the surroundings are designed in a negative format, the child will emerge out of that with a steep hill to overcome. This requires caring parents willing to take time with the kids, help with home work and ask about their day. Not just send them out to where ever just so you can have 'quiet' time.

I am from a poor family and went to very poor schools for elementary, jr, and high school. My schools were 40% black. All I know is this, the white kids would for the most part at least sit still and attempt to learn, almost all the black kids would talk in class, not do homework, say fuck and other words to the teacher, and in general act like animals. Again the white kids didn't. We were all poor.
Black culture teaches black kids to act like animals and if they dont they are "acting white"

When people bring up "born out of wedlock" today, they're not talking about marriage alone. They're talking about kids who aren't born into a stable family environment. Granted, not every stable family environment is specifically married, but the wedlock percentage serves as a reliable indicator of the state of affairs.
Kids aren't just being born outside marriage. They're being born outside the support they need.

I think that Bill Cosby had a valid point. Many biological fathers, including my own, abandon their responsibilities and tend to be shiftless. For the ones that are handling their business, my statement doesn't apply to you. It appears that many, not all, African-Americans don't want to hear the truth. If you travel to any small village in West, East, South or Central Africa you will see that the men have children with many women, rape is common, and the men spend most of the day resting while the women toil. You sound like a suburban kid. Due to district school laws passed, segregation is emerging again. Many neighborhoods are racially stratified due to racist redlining practices in banking and real estate. Now that many kids are forced to go to local schools, if you live in a poor black neighborhood, the quality of the school will be substantially poorer because many schools are funded through property taxes. Many black children do not have quality education because the schools are poor.

I moved to the country 5 years ago and haven't had any problem with break ins. Stereotypes start for a reason my friend. I'm all about peace and harmony to those who do good in the world. And to all those who rob, cheat, kill and steal well...they deserve to go to prison. White, black, hispanic, asian, italian...doesn't matter.

The black community is the joke... I'm European, but I traveled to USA... I've never seen such racist and lazy people in my life, blaming the fact that they are uneducated and can't get a job on white people... how come indians (hindu) and chinese don't have that problem? oh yeah, they study and work hard, that's why.

@HachimitsuBoy85 Asians make up a tiny percentage of the population in the USA. They often do not speak good English and network primarily with certain cliques. That's not to say they never suffer discrimination. Even though they are more educated than blacks. Asians still earn less than educated whites. Tim Wise has discussed that in his books. It's not an excuse, it is just a hardship that happens to be real to certain minorities.

Many of our bretherns and sisters are far more successful than the groups you mentioned, yet you intentionally set them above us. @onekutguy Everybody wants to compare Black families with the Cosby Show. The Cosby Show is not real. It's a scripted TV show. Stop comparing them. And Bill Cosby isn't perfect. He cheated on his wife. For a conservative man that is some real BS. He should keep his trap shut and move on.

This dude and cosby are so wise but can t see the real reason black children are born out of wedlock. Do people wanna have kids and not take care of them? Some may but I feel comfortable in saying that isnt the case for the majority. But like the children of Israel this man and cosby wanna hold onto Pharoah they love their white masters and will say whatever he wants them to say. Criticism we have for each other should be done in private as it is in house business.
