I drove a 500cwt pneaumatic steam hammer for 12 years on a forge. best job i ever did.we used to make stanchions for ships handrail and powerstations. we made about 50 per shift, then they brought in a machine that could make 50 in an hour, but you will not beat the smell of coaldust and being showerd with sparks the old way.
that thing so beats a hand hammer! i want one now. although it would probably be pretty expensive to run, but worth the ability to make things out of 4in stock.
Have to agree... the smith using the hammer is being very delicate and showing great skill. Hammers of this size have a great ammount of adjustment and stroke available to them, he is simply using the ammount of force he needs not all that he has at his disposal.
If you don't own a powerhammer keep your comments to yourself.
And if you look at it they got a distance thingie to make the bar even height/width, cant blow to hard on that as that is cold steel destroying both anvil and hammer if they strike hard =)
He is not using full power, ive been in the shop that this takes place and seen the power of those hammers, they can indeed flatten those bars in one single blow, but why would he do that if he wants a ball at the end? .. Learn forging then come back and post comments please, he works with this stuff and has done for a long time =)
Power hammers can hit with varying force, controlled by the opperator. Considering they're making something fairly small, I'd say using it's full power would be pretty counterproductive...
No way! Look at em- he's full on the pedal. Besides, it's the small stock thats the issue here- the hammer hits better when he puts the other end in cuz it's bigger. The throw is designed for something bigger, but it can probably be adjusted down to hit small stuff too. Not the case here, hence maladjustment. Anyways it's impossible to tell without being there to try it out. It just doesn't look like it's doing the job for such a big machine.
put on a dildo i bet it will harder lol

Doesn't look like it's adjusted right.
There ought to be more power.
That thing ought to flatten the steel and those two gum chewing guys in about five strokes...
