  • this is cool....

  • Trane's solo - most wonderful i've ever heard

  • wow

  • MILES COLTRANE FOREVER

  • "peppersax"... it's so true man!!!!!!you right!!!!!!!!!trane and miles like mozart and beethoven!!!!

  • This is LIFE!!! Thank you SO much for posting!

  • still think this is one of the uploads that validates all of youtube. thank you, vagmez, youtube, ma google

  • I've watched this clip a million times and just noticed something. Watch Miles' mouth at 1:21. He opens his mouth, cracks a smile and it's like he's about to say, "Damn Trane', you're one bad MOFO" . Also, watch the trombone player at the same point in the video. He takes a second glance after Trane does some more 'gymnastics' on the horn. I bet that doesn't happen when Kenny G takes a solo LOL...............PRICELESS CLIP!

  • BTW this vid FAILS.....not only does it not have Miles Davis solo (really dont care im a tenorsax playing Coltrane listener).......but it doesnt even have the complete Coltrane solo.....aww man....but yea...these are teh GREATS

  • sax player here........trane ....awesome .......

  • Pure powerful genius talent like Clifford Brown was. What a quintet that would have made! They would have 'blown' their brains and our minds right out of our heads or something like that.

  • Coltrane is bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • y did u reply to me!?

  • @dvnstvn9 I hope you're joking. Coltrane is one of the best saxophonists ever and kenny g is easy listening.

  • @AresCassell yeah i was lol, i wanted to see how many thumbs down i could collect, and how many people would actually take that seriously. johns my favorite tenor saxophonist...

  • @dvnstvn9 It's cool, man. Anyone who really does think kenny g is better than coltrane needs a kick in the balls. Besides, i could be wrong but I think 7 thumbs down is the most any message can receive.

  • You're right. I just tried to give another thumbs down but couldn't.

Kenny G... isn't a pimple on a boil on the ass of Coltrane.

Good lord. What fools these mortals be.

  • @AresCassell and Kenny G is a sellout

  • What are YOU smoking?

  • he means the good "bad"

  • ofcourse

  • Look at the other musicains at 1:10 checking Trane out. they are thinking "would you listen to this MF playining his ass OFF!!!" Most musicians don't group together and look at you like that !! Trane had (has) that hypnotizing effect that DEMANDS that you listen.

  • excelente amigo

  • wow.

  • Autodane , you are confusing them with James Brown , the Godfather of Dubbo

  • i'am only 18, one year ago, i've start to listen new things, exploring...i have to say that i'am in love by Jazz and Blues...absolutely amazing. John Coltrane and Miles Davis are legends. Jazz is really deep, is the best music style to express our feelings. thats why some songs touch us...just amazing, i can't say much because i don't have words to describe my passion by jazz...People, continue to talk and posting because i want to know more...thank you!!

  • Don't get discouraged from listening to these timeless music pieces... he's just trying to get you to listen to his crappy jazz band.

  • why are you hating on the old stuff?

the old stuff is bad ass.

    especially Davis and Coltrane

  • It's not better.

  • I am laughing so hard reading about how you are even mentioning yourself in the same sentence as these great!! LMFAO!

  • Wow you are cocky as hell. I watched that video and its really bad.

  • Perhaps, or are they Lydian? At that time Miles was harmonically influenced by a.o. pianist George Russell, who was deeply into Lydian.

I haven't given up playing, but playing modern jazz solo is difficult for a pianist when it comes to keeping correct time. However, I now ordered a book on Monk and how to play his tunes...

  • No So what is definitely based upon the dorian mode, the 'so what' chords are based on quartal harmony where the chords are built up of fourths. For some reason in fakebooks and lead charts they tend to put minor 7 chord signs but I think thats so people will assume to use a dorian scale

  • stellar.

  • ausome i have vid of me playing my piano just type in saxtom1 and it will come up with a fore-teen year old boy playing infant eyes a jazz solo by wayne shorter!

  • god is here

  • Miles Davis and John Coltrane!!!

They are a Musician's musician. I recently saw Santana wearing a T-shirt with the great Coltrane on it. So I decided to check out Coltrane and I got more than I could have imagined!!!!

    Miles Davis, John Coltrane WOW!!!

They are true pioneers and the Best of the Best!!!!!!!

    Thanks for posting this clip!!!!!!!!!!!

  • oh they deffinately are. If I infered correctly, your new to the genre...SO you should check out Charles Mingus, Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, Brecker Brothers, Joe Pass.....etc etc

  • And cannonball addereley, he's on the studio recording of this song, He's a stunningly good player, different to all the other alto players.

Also you want to check out Thelonious Monk, a legend

  • Mattytheman, I think you are right about Adderley. BTW, do you know who was Buckshot LaFunke?

IMO Monk was the heart of bebop. His chord structures were stepping stones for Diz and Bud. An expert once showed me the intro of 'Round Midnight', i.e. how Dizzy played it. A knowledgeable amateur pianist, I was stunned; who in the world would call the chord Eb-Gb-C a C Minor 6? Monk did.

  • i love how everyone that isn't playing is smoking...

  • Trane plays so much shit on his solo, that the trombone player had to take a double look. Also, Miles kinda smiled if you look closer at his expression. Trane couldn't have been no more than 30 when this was recorded. His sound is so fresh even after 50 years! Whew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RE:peppersax-Trane man-great solo:-D what´s wrong with it? It is your opinion-so I guess-u know what exactly is shit*I can´t help myself- I cannot critisize sound-music of guys like Miles Davis or John Coltrane...

  • the song is So what by miles davis

  • What song is it?

  • Comment removed

  • This is what jazz is all about. This is the best of the best. They breathe life into jazz music. You feel it as they play it.

  • agreed. Those two guys were among the best musicians to come from Wales. We are very proud of them here in Swansea.

  • awesome tunes. every musician's a genius...and its only right to honour each and every one of them. yeo...this is like genius much. lol thanks

  • And then He said let there be Cool...and it was Cool... and it was Good

  • fuck, i just LOOOVE Coltrane!!!!!

  • royski9

If Miles was overrated then why did all of the great musicians cover his tunes and play in bands with him? It is interesting however that he always said he could never hear the fast stuff which is why his style is more lyrical.

  • royski,

Let me guess; you don't care for Picasso or Dylan for the same reason as your disdain for Miles, right !

    EAT ME !

The fact that you watched this and looked for fault says everything. You self-riteous little $hit ! I laugh in your general direction, HA !

  • ...get your fuckin shit together bro.....dont come here bullshitting everyone just because you think you know alittle something about wat your saying.......take ur shit else where and stop fucking with people.....get a fuckin life man.......ur sick for picking fights like this dood...chill the fuck out and keep these thoughts to ur self....respect the musicians...respect otheres...and most importantly....try to respect yourself.......u've overlooked something major here bro....unforgivable......

  • "Dont come here bullshitting everyone just because you think you know alittle something about wat your saying"

"Respect otheres, keep you thoughts to yourself?"

    Isn't that talking against youself?

  • What royski9 said was pretty bad, embarrassing and ridiculous. I do get your point, but he just took it way too far. I'll have you know that I rarely comment on any video though, not like you care.

  • miles davis se va a fumar un cigarro

    asi de siemple

  • miles is crisp sharp and clean but Trane: Train is truly truly beautiful.

  • Dude he is my idol! (John Coltrane) I play the alto sax.

  • Aha, that's why I couldn't understand why someone who knows the 'changes' could not distinguish So What from a blues. No bad joke, though. don't worry.

At 62, after 40 years, I have given up trying to play modern jazz piano and am reverting to play mainstream jazz and cocktail music. But I still love Getz, Trane, Ornette and Dolphy. Best to you!

  • anyone know the name of this tune?

  • haha.. no way do you not know this tune with the name Minor7b5b9. Good try to piss people off... but if you really need to know.. it's called Freddie Freeloader...

  • Sorry, but no, it's not. Freddie Freeloader is a blues that ends on an inverted diminished chord (when you play in C: Bb 13 instead of C). Here we have the 32 bar AABA pattern of 'So What', A part in D dorian, B part in Eb dorian).

  • Please notice that i was making a joke off of the Joke that minor7b5b9 made.. I was successful of getting someones attention... I said this dumb comment just so I could show how easy it is to piss people off on here... You really don't have to explain anything.. I was hoping you would get my joke.. This is one of the greatest tunes ever... Hopefully I will one day have the such a great understanding of the triad pairs and what not like trane.. I love this recording. It was a bad joke. DORIAN!

  • hey minor the tune is called "So What"

  • Thanks Chaz.....I knew I had heard this Coltrane solo before, but just couldn't think of the basic tune; must be getting old :)

  • stupidly cut tease... what the h????? i mean... jc is pure... pure soul.. and jazzman 303 is right - they're just getting into his soul when it ends... jc would set it up and take some time to do so... you had to listen... i wonder if miles ever really did. "i can't stop" john said. Miles: "try taking the horn out of your mouth." Contemptuous and vain. why else would he love evans? evans was no challenge to his ego.

  • Relax..just listen

  • Depends what perod you are looking at. I thought Miles was the best at bebop ballads, & some of the stuff he did with his quintets was pure genius."Kind of Blue" in 1959 was a jazz landmark. His use of space in his solos was remarkable. It's not how many notes you play in a given amount of time, it's what you say with the ones you do. I think your own sense of your jazz knowledge & taste is overrated......by you.

  • jazz is all about listening and enjoying it

jazz requires some learning to enjoy it

dont be mad at the world...

    let the world learn it...

    jazz is life

    live it

  • .... today is the day Miles left us.... heaven is filled with his sound....17 yrs and I still miss him....now, I'm still buzzin' from this awesome footage...so rare, and extraordinary....every frame, just awesome, and their sounds.... miles.... and trane rippin' up the tracks... I'll be sleepless now.... thanks so much for taking the time to post this priceless footage.!... :)

  • Good stuff. Miles is burning a cigarette and Trane is burnin' down the house

  • Miles davis and john coltrane were millionaire's right?

  • Miles Was... Trane not so much...

  • Monsters!

  • greatest trumpet player + greatest greatest saxaphonist = beautiful music

  • what a duo!!!

  • this is more than music.. its a way of life

  • We are not worthy

  • Trane... Wow, I just don't have the words.

  • the bunch of jazz cats watching Coltrane at 1:17... they look so sophisticated, I luv it ;)

  • lol. those bunch of jazz cats are the rest of the band.

  • LMAO!!...Including Miles!!

  • LOL. It seems like everybody was cool back then, don't it?

  • They Look like they are looking into Trane's Soul at 1:12-17... they also have giant question marks on their face... thinking "How does he come up with such beautiful patterns?"

    Jive Turkeys

  • Up there...and forever

  • This is the master exhibiting his craft. I have spent my life (and I am a violinist) trying to get the feel and life in my music that Trane had in his. So many of us were touched by this giant. Thanks so much for sharing this.

  • This jazz is so 'laid back' there are people talking to each other in the background.

  • FKN..... SUPERGOOD... yin and yang... Miles goes for a lucky strike in the back ground .. those were the days.. baby!

  • those sax combos r light years ahead of its time!

  • best solo........coltrane

  • Just sublime! Legends.

  • paul chambers one the best walking bass players of the jazz era

  • this song is one of the best jazz songs ever made (so What)

  • Why this short version, when an 8 minute mother is here on yt? Who is kenny g?

This "so what" number is on the "kind of blue" album. It tops jazz sales still. The visual makes it even better. Miles claimed he had the ability to put good people together. Clip saved with thanks.

  • Kenny G? LOL!

  • That kenny g thing is a joke. I dont know how any who appreciates real jazz can like that crap. Trane and Dolphy were the best. Cant forget Hank Mobley.

  • hahaha kenny g, that cracks me up

  • heh yeah, obvious joke :p

  • Im sure the Kenny g guy is joking. No person who respects real jazz can stand his bullshit.

  • yep

  • im gonna pretend like i never heard anyone desecrate John Coltrane's memory with the corporate sellout known as Kenny G. No comparison between the two at all

  • are you nuts, man?!

  • you couldnt be any more wrong, i'll just hope your kidding around.

  • TWo GODS OF JAZZ..this is a shit hot piece of classic jazz

  • ello all I finish raising youtube, 2 concerts of the thousand MILES DAVIS one in ROME 1969 AND ANOTHER ONE IN PARIS the quality is good, I hope that you like to look for by PAKOMUSICA

hola todos acabo de subir a youtube, 2 conciertos de miles davis uno en ROMA Y OTRO EN PARIS la calidad es buena, espero que os gusten buscar por PAKOMUSICA

  • danh515o

Than i guess that Coltrain has a thing for guitarists which dont play jazz :)))

  • That's understandable. Jimi Hendrix was inspired by John Coltrane's sheets of sound style when Miles played all this stuff for him.

  • Perfect combination

  • thanks

  • two giants!!

    It´s wonderful

  • I dont play sax but you have a point danh5150

  • Thanks okavipra. I actually play guitar myself (and not even jazz to tell you the truth), but quality music is quality music. It's so hard to balance instrumental virtuosity with listenability; Coltrane makes it sound easy.

  • from what i understand, they just pretty much winged it, have fun everyone, and merrry erxmarxc

  • two giants! let us now praise famous men!

  • thanks

  • never saw him live this was great

  • this is fantastic..true musical expression..this is the music that keeps going, long after commercialized music fades

  • my role model

  • Coltrane is the man. Every time I listen to him, I can't decide whether to hit the woodshed and practice, or just give up. LOL! Thanks for posting ;)

  • You know who that is on that video LordGothmog? That's Coltrane and Davis, two of the most influential jazz muscians in history. I think your the one who is tone deaf. What kinda music you listen to? How can you not respect them?

  • I wish i could've heard the whole tune... great great stuff

  • gracias

  • Supposedly there is a Miles Davis movie coming out!!! Does ne one know when???? Rumor has it that the guy from Hotel Rwanda is gonna be Miles!

  • That would be super awesome. The guy you're talking about is Don Cheadle.

There's a movie about Charlie Parker, but I haven't seen it yet.

  • I think that movie is called "'Round About Midnight". I never got a chance to watch that yet

  • Actually, I was referring to a movie called "Bird", directed by Clint Eastwood.

I really want to watch it.

  • that sounds promising as well--have to keep my eye out for both

  • "Actually, I was referring to a movie called "Bird", directed by Clint Eastwood.

I really want to watch it".

It's fantastic. Tragic (well it would be, I suppose) but fantastic nonetheless. Its the best thing I've ever seen Forrest Whittikar in, certainly.

  • Man, Coltrane smokes on that riff. The guys in the background definitely know they're in the right place.

  • lord gothmog , do you prefer 50 cent??? lol

  • Beautifull!

  • I like jazz, man some people don't understand this music but i think it is beacuse you have to listen to many jazz songs before beggining to like it. Other types of music is much easier to like beacuse they are designed for masses

  • YES! YES ! TRUE CREATORZ TILL THEIR END..

I HAVE THIS ON VHS. "THE WORLD ACCORDING TO JOHN COLTRANE" Dam it ! I love it. not like the prententious stuff you get now a dayz..

  • improvisation is more about what u feel than what u know

  • it has nothing to do with looking smart, it's knowing whats good music and bad music. this is good music.

  • these guys are obviously talented, but there's something missing in the connection of music. It seems like alot of the improvisation is just cycling through a scale without a distinct fluid connection between each note. I know there's more to jazz than just going from A-Z through a scale.

  • lordgothawhatever, not liking certain kinds of music is your perogative but hurling insults and judgments is childish. Not recognizing talent and genuis in these Jazz players wether you like them or not shows a

weak mind. Coltrane and Davis possessed mind boggling talent.

  • Sublime...

  • Man that was enjoyable! Lordgothmog, you just don't get it. Africarolina has it right.

  • i love john coltrane but i have to say that every solo sounds like a solo from blue train

  • hurts your ears!!! your talking about miles and train here

  • The masters!

  • masters in a delve we are so glad-smirky to recieve .... dang, beat

  • exactly!

  • lordgothmog...its all about improvisation...with this type of jazz...that bullish that people call jazz aka KENNY G is not jazz at all...its easy listening...open ur mind

  • so wtf are u doing here?

  • you thick bastard

  • go back to playing dungeons and dragons fuckbomb...

  • Thank you man. I love jazz, you can see that from my comments. But this really isn't that great. Wow, Coltrane can can ascend and descend through a few scales with a tone that can be achieved by any 8th grader with proper equipment. And the trumpet solo was pretty bad too.

  • You are an idiot

  • u idiot kevim, u obviously dont understand train, u got a lot of guts raping train through those comments, train isnt like these smooth jazz bitches that only care about tone, he expresses himself harmonically and through melodys, i think this is a amazing improvisation by miles and train, and i also think that if u love jazz that you should really try to understand

  • for some people, jazz just truly makes you feel good. i can't help but smile and relax when i hear a swell tune of bebop goodness. i mean hey, some people are just born classy.

  • truth. listening to jazz makes me feel damn good. almost as good as when i play it

  • thats music !

  • man, trane was so inspired, he couldn't have had a better name, like a "train"

  • Abslutely!!! Called train...

  • no substitute for him
