Can someone explain the criteria they use to decide which films are nominated for Best Picture and indeed for which one is chosen as the best? If we knew what the criteria was, we would not always criticize their decisions. I don't have a problem with Titanic being chosen as the best film but some that were nominated weren't that good. As Good As It Gets and The Full Monty were nothing special. I thought Donnie Brasco would have given Titanic a run for it's money and should have been nominated.
Of course Titanic had to win!! but there were very good movies nominated that year too. Why are good movies all nominated together because it let sometimes a crappy movie win other years.

And, then, I really agree with you that Kate Winslet was totally snubbed. Sorry, Helen, Helena, Julie and Judi, but Kate was iconic.
Even if you didn't like Titantic's romance stuff, it's a timeless film. LA Confidential is maybe timeless, but the rest are becoming increasingly unwatchable with age.

For those who still don't know, Titanic (the same movie, not a remake) will be released in 2012 in 3D to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sailing and sinking of the Titanic, which sailed and sank in April, 1912. That's why the movie is gonna be released in April 2012. The release date will be April 6 which is the friday before April 10 (the day Titanic set sail for its first maiden voyage).

LA Confidential was my pick for Best Picture. Titanic had its popular appeal. I think sometimes AMPAS just need films like this to attract more audiences. Remember Forrest Gump over Pulp and Shawshank, LOTR over Lost In Translation...
You don't understand your own feelings if you don't understand why people love Titanic. It's that simple. Cameron made something that will last through the ages, because it is so technically proficient. It's like the Citizen Kane of romantic films. BUT, notice how I didn't say that it was the "new Citizen Kane." I said it was the Kane of romances. That means you still have to know how to appreciate romance, before you can get Titanic.
Sorry but I thought everyone got caught in the emotion and special effects of Titanic, not that it wasn't a good movie. But the best of that year was L.A. Confidential. Take a look.

I disagree. I think if Titanic didn't earn so much money, it would've still taken home Best Picture and Best Director. Make no mistake. It is THAT GOOD. If you know the film's history, you should know that Titanic and James Cameron, both got a standing ovation at the premiere.
i can't wait to see Titanic again in theater next year. They said that they're going to release it again in 3D. I don;t really like 3D and i don't care that i have already watched it for 10000x in DVD.

what few people take into account is inflation and other factors like increased price sales, in which case avatar pales in financial success to titanic, as does titanic pale next to films like gone with the wind and star wars

I disagree. I think if Titanic didn't earn so much money, it would've still taken home Best Picture and Best Director. Make no mistake. It is THAT GOOD. If you know the film's history, you should know that Titanic and James Cameron, both got a standing ovation at the premiere.

i can't wait to see Titanic again in theater next year. They said that they're going to release it again in 3D. I don;t really like 3D and i don't care that i have already watched it for 10000x in DVD.
I will surely watch it again... again... and again...
because watching it in the cinema would be one of the greatest moment in my life.
